The ultimate '90s cruiser, the R129 almost took the accolade of 'the car of the year' at its launch. First introduced to the world in 1989 with production running until 2001, the boxy body and large alloys were a step-change in the design from the R107 and hold their own place, now considered an already matured modern classic.

Exterior

The R129 is maturing like a fine wine, '90s boxy good looks finished in a sterling Green-Black Metallic.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with Mercedes-Benz 16” Alamak forged alloys, they look in great condition and appear free from curbing. Finished with Continental ContiPremiumContact 2 tyres that look to have a very good amount of tread.

Bodywork

Square, aerodynamic and boxy - we love the ‘90s shape the R129 offers. All the bodywork looks great on this particular example with all the panel gaps looking tight and true on visual inspection. Looking around we didn’t notice any areas of concern on the bodywork.

Being picky, we did notice a very small patch of wear to the fabric convertible roof - the hard top roof is in great condition and comes with the movable stand.

Paint

Finished in a lovely "Green Black Metallic (1890)" which combines very nicely with the full cream leather interior.

The paint looks even in finish and colour across all the panels. When getting really close we noticed a very small patch of lacquer peel to the offside wing mirror and a very small mark on the boot lip, also a very small patch of scratches on the offside front wing.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks to be in great condition all around. The brightwork trim/rubber seals look good too and in line with the rest of the car.

Interior

The light interior of this convertible looks very plush with the deep leather seats, matching carpets and dark brown touches on the dashboard and steering wheel.

Seats and Carpets

We really like these comfortable leather seats the R129 offers. The seats are in good condition in the front and the back, with a few very minor creases in the leather that give it that genuine long-lasting Mercedes-Benz look.

Both sun visor plastic clips would benefit from some attention, and the centre console storage compartment lid would benefit from a replacement. Small cosmetic touches to really elevate the luxurious interior.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the car, a really nice example. A clean and smart dashboard and instrument cluster. Additionally, a retro Ericsson phone straight from 1996 can be found mounted in a handy spot by the dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic 4-spoke Mercedes-Benz steering wheel that shouts the '90s.

Both the steering wheel and gearstick are in a condition you would expect from this car - we didn't observe and excessive signs of wear and tear and both items present very smartly.

Mechanics

With a mighty 228BHP to tap into, the 3.2L straight-six offers all the power you'd ever want in a luxury roadster.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.2L engine produces 228BHP, it might not be the big brawny V8, but it still packs more than enough of a punch through to the rear wheels for a great drive.

Scott reports both the engine and gearbox are smooth in operation.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension on the SL 320 uses independent dampers with separate springs up front with anti-dive geometry. To the rear are the 5 multi-link arms with separate gas-filled dampers and coil springs offering anti-lift and anti-squat geometry keeping the Mercedes steady. Scott reported the ride is nice and smooth with no unusual knocks or bangs coming from the suspension.

The brakes on this car also feature 2-circuit hydraulic power-assisted wheel discs with ABS. It's reported to perform with plenty of stopping power when required.

The Drive

The SL 320 gives passengers a luxurious and powerful drive, the car offers cruising abilities that will enable you to cross continents with little effort.

With the mighty power of a 3.2L Inline-6 at your toes simply sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

Electrics and Other

Scott reports that, to his knowledge, all the electrics are working as they should. He has had the hydraulic roof attachment struts replaced to ensure the convertible and hardtop roof operate as they should.
