Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

If you're after something a little different, this ex-Singapore military G-Wagon is well worth a look in!

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon (aka G-Class) is a 4x4 "terrain vehicle", originally developed as a military off-roader in Austria. The car is characterised by its industrial boxy looks and body-on-frame construction; it uses three fully locking differentials which makes it rather unique, yet highly capable. The G-Class is one of the companies longest production running vehicles with a span of 42 years. This example is the first generation of the G-Class known (1979-1992), there were three engine options and five body variants with this particular example packing the robust 2.4L diesel.

The “Wolf” version of the G Wagon was developed specifically for military use, they have now been deployed by over 45 nations including the United States, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Singapore.

Ideal for a military motor collection or perhaps something a bit different to take into the West End, this ex-Service Singapore Military G Wagon is not your typical G. Unmodified from its original military specification, front towing coupling, a real trailer hitch, folding rear side-facing seats and various weapons brackets. It's been in the current ownership for over a year, the vendor having imported and registered the car in the UK. The car is now SORN for the winter, the vendor will action a fresh MOT for the winning bidder.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Simon the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This ex-Military G-Wagon is something quite different, it's uniqueness really drew me in and I couldn't resist adding it to my personal collection.

With Simon's connections within the motor trade, he was offered the opportunity to purchase 3x ex-Singapore Military G-Wagons, this being one he kept personally for himself to enjoy.

Over his ownership Simon's hardly used the vehicle, having only covered around ~500 KM in it. He's had the canvas top refurbished and added new Perspex windows and removable all weather higher door panels. All to fit the canvas frame the car was supplied with. Due to lack of use, Simon has decided to part with the 240 GD after just over a year of ownership. Simon will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

It's those classic G-Wagon looks, but just that little bit different to stand out in a crowd!

Wheels and Tyres

Equipped with black painted 16" wheels with hefty Michelin off-road tyres. All the wheels reflect the very little use the car has had in the UK, with no marks or wear to note.

The wheels are wrapped in Michelin 4x4 tyres which appear in great condition with loads of tread for ploughing across any terrain. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

All the bodywork looks in great shape on this car, with all the panel gaps and shut lines looking good. Being a military vehicle, it features lightweight doors, and had a windscreen which folds forward as pictured. The car also comes with a frame and canvas covering making it usable all year round. The underside of the car looks in great condition too, as can be seen pictured in the "Mechanics" gallery.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a "Military Green", this large utilitarian G-Wagon really blends into the scenic environment. The satin finish of the paint looks great in finish and colour, coverage across each panel looks even and a good match across the car.

We noticed the odd very minor scratch around the front bumper, although you'll have to get very close to notice this. Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The one sheet of glass, being the front windscreen looks to be in great condition. The trim/rubber seals look good too and in line with the rest of the car. The owner has had some custom side screens made, to accompany the canvas cover that can be used in more inclement weather.

Please view the images and videos of the glass to see in detail.

Interior

Fully equipped interior with a canvas top and drain plugs incase you get caught out in the rain.

Seats and Carpets

Very utilitarian full grey vinyl seats are fitted in the front of the G-Wagon and really have stood the test of time. The covers appear in great condition with no areas of major concern to note. This is a similar story with the rear inward facing fold-down seats, just some age related wear/marks.

Being an ex-military car, no carpets in this example, just the bare exposed painted floorpan etc. Please take a look at interior tours for a detailed view of the cabin space.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the car, a really nice example. A clean and smart dashboard and instrument cluster with very little signs of use.

We did notice a little crack on the amp meter, please view the images to see the dashboard in more detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A traditional and hardwearing classic 2-spoke Mercedes-Benz steering wheel. Both the steering wheel and gearstick are in a condition you would expect from this car - we didn't observe and excessive signs of wear and tear and both items present very smartly.

We have captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior.

Mechanics

Cold weather testing was done above the Arctic Circle and warm weather testing in the Sahara, some say these engines can run for a million miles.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by a naturally aspirated 2.4L inline-four-cylinder diesel engine, it may not be the most powerful of the bunch but robustness and reliability as said to be a plenty.

Power is sent to all four wheels via a two-speed transfer case and a four-speed manual transmission. That two-speed transfer case gives the G240 both high and low range, a concept that’ll be immediately familiar to those of you with off-road driving experience.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up, and for a closer look underneath, and the tidy engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

As with all first-generation G-Wagons, this has body-on-chassis construction, with live axles front and rear riding on coil springs, with transverse links and telescopic shock-absorbers front and back. Simon mentions that the suspension feels good, and no unusual knocks or noises are present.

Please view the mechanical photos and video to see underneath the car.

The Drive

Built for military use, the G-Wagon is a highly capable off-road vehicle - this late model is un-modified from its original military purpose and retains the classic looks.

Electrics and Other

Simon reports that to his knowledge, all the electrics are working as they should. No mod-cons per say in this car, it was built for the military after all.

History and Paperwork

A robust and reliable ex-Singapore military 4x4 G-Wagon which remains unmodified from its service in the armed forces.

This vehicle is coming out of ~1 year ownership with Simon. Being an ex-military car, it doesnt come with a book pack and long line of invoices, however their is a letter of authenticity by Mercedes-Benz MBPC Homologation Department. Simon will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below. The car is currently SORN for the winter, Simon has said that he will action a new MOT for the winning bidder.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
