Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Probably one of the most over-engineered cars to come out of the 80s, it was designed to take on the BMW 3 Series, and it did just that!

The W201, now more commonly known as the 190, resulted from a hefty £600 million investment by Mercedes-Benz to create something which would take on the popular BMW 3-Series. Launched in 1982, the 190 was a massively over-engineered car with features such as ABS, seatbelt pre-tensioners, anti-dive and anti-squat suspension, as found in the more executive models such as the C and E-class. The 190 also had a completely new chassis design developed purely for the W201. There was certainly something for everyone with a choice of engines ranging from the 1.8 litre, 2.0, 2.3, 2.5, or 2.6 petrol engines or the 2.0, 2.2 or 2.5 litre diesel engine.

This particular model we have here is the 2.0 litre petrol variant which offers satisfactory performance and good fuel economy. It was also specced with the expensive full leather option, the stunning "Bornite Metallic" paint and with spoiler too. It comes to market from ~2 year ownership, and just 2 former keepers before that, covering what is a low mileage figure of ~63,700 for a car such as this.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Harjit the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I remember owning a 190E as one of my first cars - which is the reason I bought this one.

Harjit once owned a Mercedes 190E which was one of his first-ever cars. So when he spotted this superb low-ownership and low-mileage 1991 Mercedes 190E, he just had to have it. The Mercedes has had just two previous keepers and is in superb condition inside and out, with just -63,692 miles covered.

Even though Harjit has enjoyed reminiscing with the 190, he’s not really used it as much as intended in his two year ownership, so he’s now decided to let someone else have the pleasure of this 90s icon. Please feel free to ask him any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

The 190E oozes style - with the colour-coded panels, boot spoiler alloy wheels and 90s Mercedes design.

Wheels and Tyres

The original 15-hole alloy wheels are in excellent condition. A previous keeper has restored these, and there are no scuffs or marks to mention.

The tyres are all matching with a good amount of tread remaining. Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Looking around the Mercedes 190E, the panels align nice and straight with an equal gap, and there are no dings or dents to point out. Harjit reports that two new wings were fitted before he took ownership. The car's underside is very clean, and there are no signs of flaking underseal. It is quite clear that the car has been dry stored as any surface corrosion is virtually minimal.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the gorgeous "Bornite (Blackberry) Metallic", the paintwork presents exceptionally well. It has been reported that the car had both sides repainted when the wings were fitted. There are no real chips to mention, but there is a small amount of blistering on the bonnet, which you can see and feel very slightly, but it is quite difficult to see on camera. There are some other small chips and scuffs on the colour-coded plastic trims, but nothing excessive for the age of the vehicle.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows look in good condition, with no apparent scratches on the front, rear, or side windows. The window seals look in good condition, and the trims around the front and rear windows have no tarnishing.

The headlights are in good condition with no chips. The rear lights have some small fractures/ splits in the lenses but don’t look to have cracked all the way through the lens.

Interior

Leather, electric windows, electric mirrors, electric sunroof, and vanity mirrors - pretty much all the options were ticked when the 190 was ordered.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the Mercedes are finished in "Beige" leather (265). These are in excellent condition and show very few signs of wear, including on the high-wear areas, such as the bolsters. In addition, the door cards are in excellent condition on all four doors.

The carpets have a set of Mercedes mats fitted, also in Beige. These are very clean, again with very little wear. Under the mats, the carpet is also spotless with no wear. Inside the boot is just the same. Lifting the carpet shows the spare wheel and jack. The warning triangle and tool kit are also present. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good order. There are a couple of splits in the fascia around the heaters and one of the switches. The instruments are working correctly, with the odometer reading ~63,692 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel shows no real signs of wear, as does the automatic gearknob. However, a couple of small splits in the wooden trim are present around the gearknob surround.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

Last serviced just over ~350 miles ago, the 190E is ready to jump in and enjoy.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.0 litre engine fires up as expected, taking just a few seconds to reach a smooth idle. No untoward noises are coming from the engine bay, and everything appears to be in good order looking from above and below.

The automatic transmission glides through the gears on demand without jerking between changes. No untoward noises are coming from the transmission, and everything appears to be in good order.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension causes no areas of concern, no knocks or bangs are coming from either corner of the car, and the ride is smooth.

The brakes bring the 190 to a halt in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

The Mercedes 190E is a great car to be in. It’s comfortable, with plenty of space, there is enough power when needed, and the ride is ever so smooth. The rumours about it being an over-engineered car certainly come true when you drive the 190; it is a joy to be in.

Electrics and Other

Everything in the car is reported to be working just as it should except the trip counter does not work, the odometer is working fine though. The switchgear looks in good order, with the lettering to the buttons showing minimal signs of any wear. A Pioneer cassette player has been fitted, which has a removable face.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

A fully stamped service book suggests the 190 E has been well taken care of, stunning condition and modest mileage to boot.

The original handbooks are present with the 190 and a fully stamped service book up until ~350 miles ago, which was the last service. The car has three keys and three key fobs, although one does not work. One key even has the original key tag number attached.

The V5 shows just two previous keepers making Harjit the third in 32 years, which definitely falls into the low ownership category. So this is a fantastic opportunity for any Mercedes fan or even any lover of cars from this era, where things were less complicated, to become the fourth owner of this low-mileage classic Mercedes.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
