Regarded as one of Stuttgart's finest designs, the R129 offers superb touring credentials in a package which is firmly in the modern classic category.

The ultimate 90s cruiser, the R129 almost took the accolade of car of the year at launch. First introduced to the world in 1989 with production running until 2001, the boxy body and alloys were a step-change in the design from the R107 and hold their own place in history now.

The early SL320's come equipped with the robust 229BHP inline-6, offering a top speed of 149MPH. Legendary designer Bruno Sacco was the man responsible for the handsome angles and scale of the car, and these early editions with their period two-tone exterior styling are often favourites for enthusiasts.

This lovely example has been owned by Nick for the past 6 years, it was previously owned by a Mercedes-Benz mechanic and boasts an impressive history of main dealer care. Finished in "Smoke Silver" over "Mushroom" leather, and with the mileage at a fair ~83,000 miles, just two previous owners and years and year of servicing history from Mercedes-Benz makes for a smart package coming to auction.

These SL's eat up the miles with ease, it's a true continental crossing cruiser.

Nick is a petrolhead and has really loved his SL ownership over the past 6 years. He purchased the car from his son-in-law (a Mercedes mechanic), the car was very attractive to Nick as it had full main dealer service history, just 2 former keepers and was presented in the attractive two-tone Smoke Silver paintwork.

Nick has spent his fair share of money maintaining this bonafide modern classic, he takes great pride in all his cars and has recently had the wheels freshened up along with having the rear suspension rebuilt and getting a new soft-top fitted.

Due to health reasons and a larger family, Nick isn't getting as much use out of the car as he once did, therefore he is looking for a car that is a little more practical for long weekend trips and holidays with his partner and family. Exterior

The early two-tone exteriors on the R129 have to be considered the pick of the bunch, a bonafide modern classic.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with Mercedes-Benz 16” 5-spoke alloys, that look in great condition as they have all been freshened up in the current ownership. Just the rear nearside exhibits a very small area of surface corrosion as pictured. Shod in Riken Road Performance tyres, they look to have a good amount of tread and all are dated 2017.

Bodywork

We love the 90s shape the R129 offers. All the bodywork looks great on this particular example with all the panel gaps looking tight and true on visual inspection. Looking around we didn’t notice any areas of concern on the bodywork.

Nick fitted a new convertible hood around 1 year ago, however there is some wear along the offside hem. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a very attractive "Smoke Silver" (702U) which combines very nicely with the "Mushroom" (275A) leather interior.

The paint looks even in finish and colour across all the panels. When getting really close we noticed a very small scratch to the boot lip, and a very minor mark to the driver's door.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks to be in great condition all around, including the soft-top and hard-top convertible hoods. The grill trim and rubber seals look good too, in line with the rest of the car.

Interior

Draped in the highest quality leather, allowing you to cover serious mileage in absolute comfort.

Seats and Carpets

The R129 is fitted with luxurious heated-seats which are ideal for long journeys and trips around the continent. The seats are in good condition in the front, with some minor creasing in the leather that can come with age. These seats are finished in the Mercedes-Benz colour of "Mushroom" (code 275A).

We were delighted to see that the plastic fittings and centre console storage compartments are all present and fully working, showing care by past owners.

The carpets, door cards and headlining all appear in good condition - in line with the condition of the rest of the interior.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the car, a really smart 90s example. A clean and clear dashboard and instrument cluster. The black dashboard with dark wood trim is free from cracks or tears, please view the images to see the dashboard in more detail.

On the rear parcel shelf, you'll find a properly installed Alpine subwoofer and speaker set-up, however the purist will be glad to hear the original Mercedes radio is still present and included within the sale.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A retro appearance, when you sit within the cabin you're greeted with the classic 4-spoke Mercedes-Benz steering wheel, and automatic gear shifter - we didn't observe any excessive signs of wear and tear with both items presenting very smartly.

Mechanics

The robust Mercedes-Benz block offers 228BHP to tap into, ideal for this comfortable convertible.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.2L engine produces 228BHP at peak revs, it might not be packing the big brawny SL500 V8, but it still delivers significant power the rear wheels for a great drive.

Nick has used this car sparingly over his 6 years of ownership. He mentions it’s a very powerful yet economical engine choice and assures us it’s never skipped a beat. He is also using PowerCool 180 as a waterless coolant, to provide a superior level of temperature protection for the engine.

Watch the cold start video to view Nick turning the car over and letting it run up to temperature without any issues.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension on the SL 320 uses independent dampers with separate springs up front with anti-dive geometry. To the rear are the 5 multi-link arms with separate gas-filled dampers and coil springs offering anti-lift and anti-squat geometry keeping the SL steady.

Nick reports having the rear suspension and bushes completely rebuilt by Mercedes-Benz, at trade cost the total came to ~£1,800. He reports the ride is nice and smooth now with no unusual knocks or rattles coming from the suspension.

The brakes on this car also feature 2-circuit hydraulic power-assisted wheel discs with ABS. It's reported to perform with plenty of stopping power when required.

The Drive

The SL320 gives passengers a first-class luxurious experience. The car offers cruising abilities that will enable you to cross continents with little effort. With plentiful power of an Inline-6 at your toes simply sit back, relax and enjoy the drive.

Electrics and Other

The R129 is a leap from the R107, as the cabin and technology was vastly updated with electrically adjustable memory seats, windows, ABS, soft top and safety roll bar just to name a few of the features. Nick reports that everything works on the car to his knowledge.
