Introducing the Mercedes-Benz SL500 with its boxy lines, big alloy wheels, and brawny 5.0L V8 - welcome to the ‘90s.

What is the most thoroughly engineered convertible on the classic car scene today? The R129 has got to be up there in that list. The SL500 is the flagship model with its bombproof M119 5.0L V8 engine - it had more power than some of the Ferraris on sale at the same time.

The SL500 was also one of the safest cars ever built, with it’s ‘Wunderbar’ (an automatic roll bar) which deploys within milliseconds of the car flipping over. Even to this day, it’s considered an extremely safe sports car to own.

We really like this example owned and cherished by Richard for last 8 years. He’s done a great job at maintaining the beastly 5.0L V8 and preserving the bodywork in excellent condition for the new owner to enjoy as much as he has.

Bought as a retirement gift for my 65th, I've covered some 10,000 miles in this lovely convertible.

When Richard spotted this SL500 he couldn’t resist taking it for a test drive. Once Richard had driven the car, he knew this was going to be his fun weekend car to start enjoying his retirement.

During his ownership, Richard reports that he’s had his fun in the SL500 and it's time to find the car a new owner. Over Richard’s long ownership he has covered around 10,000 miles and enjoyed every single one.

The car comes with the ‘M500 MSL’ registration plate even after having a few offers for the plate. He says “I feel the two belong together”. Richard also reports the car comes with a colour matching hardtop.

Exterior

Boxy good looks and an early R129 with its two-tone exterior finish.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with Mercedes-Benz 16” Alamak forged alloys wheels, they look really great all-round, we noticed a few very minor age related marks, but you’ll have to get really close to notice any corrosion.

Wrapped in Pirelli P6000’s, the tyres look to be good all round with no deterioration which caught our eye from the photographs. We really like the sporty ‘90s stance the SL500 gives off.

Bodywork

Square, aerodynamic, and boxy - we love the ‘90s vibes the SL500 gives off. All the bodywork looks great on this particular example, all the panel gaps are tight and true. And when we look around the car in the photos, we didn’t notice any areas of concern.

Reviewing the photos we notice both front wheel arches, have a very small bit of cracking/bubbling on them, typical for the R129. The underside of the car looks pretty clean as well - we did notice a few scuffs that can be seen in the mechanical photos.

Paint

Finished in a lovely "Arctic White" paint over "Stratus Grey" we believe. The early R129's featured a two-tone approach, a touch which is really maturing well and a lot of collectors look for.

The paint is even in finish and colour across all the panels from the photos. Take the time to review the photographs and videos shot by the owner to see the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in great condition all around, in line with the rest of the car. The trim/rubber seals look good too, however, would benefit from a deep detail.

Interior

The R129 allowed you to travel in style and comfort with one of the most luxurious cabin spaces the ‘90s had to offer.

Seats and Carpets

Featuring a classy interior with grey leather seats, grey carpet and a luxurious wooden centre console.

We really like these comfortable leather seats the SL500 offers. The seats are in good condition in the front and the back, a few very minor creases and light cracking in the leather that give it that genuine long-lasting Mercedes-Benz look.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the car, a really nice example. A clean and smart dash and instrument cluster, all the numbers are clean, clear and legible.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Mercedes-Benz classic 4 spoke steering wheel from the ‘90s. A big steering wheel adding the minimal effort required to drive this sports convertible.

The automatic gear knob is also in good condition, in-line with the rest of the car. Unfortunately it’s missing the three pointed star that goes on top, which can be replaced for less than £15.

The mighty M119 5.0L V8 will satisfy all of your weekend driving needs and more. Sweep down the French Rivera in style, comfort, and ease with this powerful engine.

Engine and Gearbox

The powerful and bulletproof 5.0L V8 is installed in the SL500, this is the top of the line standard production model and fitted with a hydraulic 4-speed gearbox which in-tandem produces 322BHP at 5,500rpm.

Richard has always enjoyed sitting back and enjoyed the ride of the beautiful SL500, he mentions it’s a very powerful engine and assures us it’s been regularly serviced and kept during his ownership, never skipping a beat.

Suspension and Brakes

The front suspension in this SL500 has independent damper struts whereas the rear suspension has independent 5-arm multilink. Richard assures us of a very smooth ride.

The brakes on this car also feature 2-circuit hydraulic power-assisted wheel discs with ABS. Richard lets us know that the car drives just as it should and stops on demand too.

Everything this car is about, the SL500 never fails to produce a luxury driving experience. A very smooth ride with the pure power of a 5.0L V8 at your fingertips – everything you need to enjoy your retirement Richard says.

Electrics and Other

The 1994 cars odometers were switched from mechanical to electronic.
