One of Mercedes' most iconic and popular models in their history - the W124 is one classy and popular saloon.

The W124 was Mercedes-Benz's first-generation to be officially referred to as an 'E-Class'. The body styling streamlined airflow beneath the car to reduce fuel consumption and wind noise. We really love this body shape that just screams the 80s.

Amjad loves all cars with boxy good looks, this W124 being no exception. Amjad and his business partner source some lovely classics, renovate them, before passing them on. They mention sourcing and repairing classics is a real passion project, which really shows through the condition of the cars they bring to market. This W124 fits the bill, a fully loaded example with features like folding rear head rests, rear electric blind, and infra red remote alarm complete with flashing lights, cutting edge for the time. The W124 marked the end of an era for the 80s boxy good looks, production running in to the 90s.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted to this example are Mercedes-Benz 8 hole 15" alloys. The alloys appear original to the car and are only showing the slightest signs of curb marks to the outer lip, you'll have to get really close to notice these.

The front tyres are Goodyear Excellence and the rear are fitted with Powertrac Citytour, both sets of tyres appear in good condition with a good amount of tread left.

Bodywork

An attractive boxy luxury saloon body shape from a bygone era - Mercedes developed an aerodynamically functional body shape and let the aesthetic follow suit, we love it.

After capturing the car in detail within the images and videos, all the shut lines across all the panels look tight and even. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in an elegant "Smoke Silver Metallic" (702U), a favourite colour amongst enthusiasts, it really suits the classy nature of this car. The paint appears even in colour and finish across all the panels and Amjad has recently treated it to a high-level polish to really bring the quality of the paint out.

Glass and Trim

When assessing the photos we were impressed by the glass and trim, all the rubbers look in good condition too. Please view all the footage for a closer look. Items like the lenses for the lights all look in good condition too, no signs of fogging which can plague older cars.

Interior

Just as you would expect for any Mercedes-Benz interior, it's quality leather and wood veneer trim throughout.

Seats and Carpets

The leather, electrically adjustable seats look in very good condition, with the usual creases around the seats that you'd expect given the age and mileage. We did notice quite a few creases on the centre armrest a usual spot for general wear and tear.

The carpets and door cards and in great condition. Please view the images and video for a closer look. This example has electronically controlled rear seat head restraints too, a neat feature to aid driver visibility when the back is empty.

Dashboard

A simple and clear layout, as seen across the Mercedes-Benz '90s range. Crisp dials laid out in front of the driver give them full information and control of this classic luxury saloon.

The dials are all legible with no obvious signs of major wear seen on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The car is fitted with its original Mercedes steering wheel and automatic gear stick and along with the rest of the cabin they look very nice for the age and mileage of the car.

Mechanics

Expect bulletproof mechanics from the M111 when properly maintained, these cars were often used for business and have been known to cover 100,000s miles.

Engine and Gearbox

Known across the motor trade for being a bulletproof powerhouse, the M111 engine is where Mercedes-Benz really excelled. They created a durable and reliable engine - a straight-4 configuration using a cast-iron engine block and an aluminium alloy cylinder head, many high-mileage examples still out and about on the roads today.

We captured a mechanical video, showing the car starting from cold without any fuss, coming up to temperature and settling swiftly after. Amjad reports that the car has been serviced, including a rocker cover gasket replacement, and fitment of a new exhaust.

Suspension and Brakes

Amjad reports suspension and brakes work faultlessly, mentioning a firm and sporty ride with stopping on-demand performance.

The Drive

A very enjoyable and comfortable ride is offered in the W124 E220, with effortless performance on top - we understand why people love the charm of the W124s.

This saloon variant makes for a very practical and usable classic with space for the whole family.

Electrics and Other

State-of-the-art technology for its time, this E-Class can still put up a good fight in the classic luxury car market.

The car is fitted with an aftermarket CD player. Amjad reports that all the electrics work as they should, except the time and temperature readout on the dash. The car had a new wiring loom fitted in ~2015 at some expense as detailed in the history section. The air-con was tested when purchased and blew cold, but with these older cars gas can leak quicker.
