Mercedes-Benz combined thorough engineering with now retro good looks to create an ultimate continental cruiser - introducing the R129 generation of the SL.

One of the ultimate cruiser to come out of the 90s, the R129 almost took the accolade of car of the year at launch. First introduced to the world in 1989 with production running until 2001, the boxy body and alloys were a step-change in the design from the R107 and hold their own place, now considered an already matured modern classic.

This SL 320 has been owned by Ray for the last 22 years, and in that time he's enjoyed using it as his daily sports car. With its "Tourmaline Green Metallic" over "Mushroom" interior, an extensive service history with the car, we know it'll draw a lot of attention. Ray is now looking for a likeminded enthusiast to take over ownership.

All you have to do is stand back and look at it... With looks to die for, and being a sublime drive, you can't beat it.

Ray's father bought back a classic Mercedes-Benz when he returned from Italy after working out there. Ray was very impressed by the build quality, and eventually purchased his own C Class. After some years he was in the market for something a little more sporty, and this R129 caught his eye. It was advertised online by a Mercedes dealership (Falcon of Loughborough), after taking this example for a test drive Ray was sold, and purchased the car in 2000 with only ~30k miles on the clock.

Since then, this car has been Ray's daily driver over the last 22 years. Ray reports the gear changes from the 5-speed auto box are seamless and the effortless straight-six engine sounds like a well-oiled sowing machine.

He has just took delivery of another classic Mercedes and he doesn't have the space for his beloved SL 320 anymore. An eye-catching Tourmaline Green Metallic over Mushroom interior sets this lovely example apart from other R129s.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with Mercedes-Benz 16” Alamak forged alloys, they look in great condition. Finished with Dunlop SP Sport tyres (dated 2015) that look great with lots of life left in them.

Bodywork

All the panel gaps look tight and correct when observing the car, just as you would expect for a luxury 90s cruiser. The car also comes with the hard top as pictured, which is also in great shape.

Down the sides of the car we did notice some very slight parking dinks, which look like they could be removed by a paintless dent specialist. Also when getting really close we did notice the odd parking mark, as well as a small crease to the front offside wing.

Paint

This Tourmaline Green Metallic colour looks excellent, an elegant and unique choice that pairs well with the Mushroom leather interior.

Ray has carried out some repair work actioned, and had both front wings resprayed, the job was to a high standard. Overall the paint is even in finish and colour across all the panels. The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

In line with the rest of the car for its age and mileage, all the glass looks great without any cracks, chips, or marks.

The trim looks great too. Please view the images and videos of the glass and trim to see in detail. Ray reports the boot struts could do with being replaced.

Interior

Luxurious '90s style, leather seats and trim as you'd expect from a Mercedes-Benz of this era, built to stand the test of time.

Seats and Carpets

Fully electrically adjustable and heated front seats are fitted within this R129 SL320. The Mushroom leather seats look great for the mileage and age of the car, the seats only show minor creases.

The back seats look great and the carpets around the car look good too, overall a smart interior that has been cared for over the years. The door cards match the rest of the interior.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the car, a very smart and high-quality example. A clear dash and instrument cluster, all the numbers are legible.

The walnut dashboard is free from any major wear or cracks, and the buttons/switches are in good condition. Ray points out that the sun visor plastic fittings have gone brittle in places (common issue with these cars) and some will need replacing eventually, parts are readily available though, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic black 4-spoke Mercedes-Benz steering wheel is a familiar sight, minimal effort required to manoeuvre this sporty convertible. It's in good condition and represents the age and mileage of the car.

The 5-speed automatic gear selector is in good condition, with its original Mercedes badge still present.

Mechanics

The 3.2L straight-six offers all the power you'd ever really need from a convertible sports car like this, a healthy 228BHP to tap into.

Engine and Gearbox

Ray has always had the car serviced annually regardless of mileage covered, and mentions carrying out any work as soon as it's required.

Watch the cold start video to view Ray turning the car over and letting it run up to temperature without any issues, as well as a drive around his local town.

Suspension and Brakes

Equipped with a 2-circuit hydraulic power-assisted braking set-up, Ray reports they perform with plenty of stopping power when required.

The front suspension in this SL320 has independent dampers, whereas the rear suspension has an independent 5-arm multi-link. Ray has had the front shock absorber, top mounts, discs and pads, trunnion bushes, callipers, and brake hoses replaced over his ownership. The Drive

A real mile-eater, the SL320 is the ultimate country-hopping convertible with its powerful 3.2L block, luxurious high-quality interior and with the option to drive with the open air above.

Electrics and Other

The R129 was a huge leap from the R107, as the cabin and technology was vastly updated with electrically adjustable memory seats, windows, ABS, electric soft top and safety roll bar just to name a few of the features.

This example is fitted with a Kenwood radio unit. Ray reports a small air-con leak.

History and Paperwork

A bonafide modern classic, coming out of ~22 year ownership and maintained over its life. An attractive and unique colourway, this SL stands out as a great value proposition.

The car comes with a healthy amount of receipts, MOT's and service history from the past 22 years of Ray's ownership. Ray mentions to us "As one might imagine, in 22 years of ownership a few areas of work have been carried out. It has been serviced annually and any required work has always been carried out".

2007 - Steering Damper replaced
2009 - Front shock absorbers replaced, head gasket and front cover seal replaced
2011 - Rear discs and pads replaced, rear outer trunnion bushes replaced
2013 - Nearside rear brake calliper replaced
2015 - Offside rear brake calliper replaced, front discs replaced, front anti-roll bar and bushes replaced
2017 – both front suspension arms replaced, brake hoses all round replaced
2019 – power steering cooler pipe replaced
2020 - front suspension top mounts replaced

The soft top has also been replaced by d:class automotive of Chobham. He also reports the car comes with its Tourmaline Green Metallic hardtop and stand.

Fitted with from factory: Air condition, central door locking, power steering, alloy wheels, cruise control, electrically adjustable heated seats, ABS, electric windows.

Hi Ray

I’ve been sitting on this for almost a week, never having done a car auction I’m a little anxious and in all honesty I was looking for a lower mileage SL but am attracted by your 22 years of ownership and the extensive service history.
I notice the aircon has a leak, do you know what the issue is and do you have an estimate of the cost to fix it?
Secondly, if you were keeping the car what might you realistically expect to fix or replace over the next couple of years?

Hello Bill, sorry for the delayed response, the message ended in my spam box for whatever reason! I would budget £500 to fix the AC. It gasses OK and works OK when gassed but looses pressure over time. From a fix standpoint, probably just the AC. I use a Mercedes specialist and he reckons that the corrosion on the springs is just that, an observation.
