The W210 E-Class is a crisp retro-looking luxury cruiser that is full of personality and presence.

The previous E-Class generation (W124) helped Mercedes regain much of the ground it lost to the first Lexus, and was a resounding success. Therefore this second-gen E-Class has so much to live up to, and it certainly delivered. Back in '96 the refreshed styling of the E-Class was regarded as strong and substantial - a classic Benz trait.

This E230 was powered by a double overhead cam 2.3-litre fuel-injected four-cylinder engine, pumping out 110kW at its peak. The 2.3L was coupled to a silky smooth five-speed auto, as well as being equipped with independent suspension, powered steering, and ABS disc brakes all around.

This is the more luxurious 'Elegance' version and on top of the very impressive range of standard equipment, it came with larger alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel, 10-stack CD player and auto-dimming mirrors - yes auto-dimming mirrors in 1996!

We really like the look of this ultra low mileage (~18,000) example which has one owner from new and a fully stamped service book, sourced by HCL Car Sales, who specialise in high performance and luxury cars.

A sleek and sophisticated package finished in Azurite Blue with larger alloys offers timeless good looks.

Wheels and Tyres

The Elegance model was equipped with larger alloy wheels, which are presented very nicely on this example and give the car a luxurious stance.

The alloys appear in great condition, all-round - some very slight curbing marks are visible around the edges, however, you'll have to get close to notice. The larger alloys are wrapped in Continental EcoComfortable 6s on the front and premium Dunlop and Pirelli rubber on the rear. All the tyres appear in great condition with a good amount of tread.

Bodywork

Sleek, strong, and sustainable body styling in keeping with the Mercedes line-up, which is nicely maturing with age.

The panel gaps and shut lines look flush and true as we observed the car.

We did notice some light signs of damage when walking around the car, most noticeable on the front bumper there is a large area of scuffing, some minor parking marks can be found on the offside doors, and rear bumper.

Paint

Finished in an elegant metallic Azurite Blue the paintwork appears in great condition - the finish in deep in lustre and looks even in coverage over each panel.

Devon tells us it's thought that the paint is original and it certainly does look that way, and with an afternoon spent detailing the car, and touching up some minor areas you could really elevate the finish of the paint to the next level.

Glass and Trim

The glass and trim tell a similar story and all look very good as you would expect from a high-performance, low mileage modern classic.

Interior

A luxurious and spacious interior never fails to provide extremely comfortable journeys, wherever you decide to travel.

Seats and Carpets

Just as you would expect for a low mileage example with one owner from new, the interior is in excellent condition for its age. It's really been given the attention it deserves, with the seats showing very little signs of use.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the car, a really nice example. A clean and smart dashboard and instrument cluster. The original Mercedes tape player and aircon controls are fitted within the gloss walnut center console.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic 4-spoke Mercedes-Benz steering wheel that shouts the '90s.

Both the steering wheel and gearstick are in a condition you would expect from this car - we didn't observe any excessive signs of wear and tear and both items present in great condition.

Mechanics

The robust and reliable 2.3L fuel-injected four-cylinder block powers this silky smooth E-Class.

Engine and Gearbox

The E230 was gifted with a double overhead cam fuel-injected four-cylinder block which will pump out 110kW at its peak. As with all Mercedes engines, they're renowned for being bulletproof and lasting hundreds of thousands of miles. This example has only covered ~18,000 since it left the production line in 1996, and comes with a whole host main dealer service stamps and MOT that help to verify this.

Devon reports both the engine and gearbox are smooth in operation.

Suspension and Brakes

The car is fitted with ABS and disc brakes all around, combined with independent suspension - the E230 offers a very comfortable ride on every journey.

Maintenance on the brakes and suspension has been carried out in line with the schedule the owner tells us, ensuring that everything works as expected.

Electrics and Other

Also the car is fitted with climate control and a battery isolator switch.

Just curious, why are there three brands of tyres on the Mercedes? How old are the tyres?

There are no advisories on the MOT.
We do not know why there are different brands on the tyres. All brands are premium, obviously changed over the years.
