Introduction
Alan Stuart
This late W124 Sportline Cabriolet is one classy '90s cruiser from Mercedes-Benz, an iconic and popular model in their history.
The legendary W124 was produced by Daimler-Benz from 1984 to 1997, they launched this cabriolet version in 1991. Just like the saloon and coupe, it was beautifully styled, overseen by Brunco Sacco's design team. The car is powered by the bulletproof 217BHP 3.2L M104 straight-six engine which drives the rear wheels via a five-speed auto transmission, only fitted to the final production models.
The car has been owned by the same family for the last 18 years. Professionally stored for seven years until 2016, it has since been used for leisure only, continuing to be kept in an underground car park in West London until April, when the owner gave up the space ahead of this sale and relocated it temporarily to their holiday home. With just one previous owner, the car presents in very good condition given the age and usage, clearly a car that has been cared for.
This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Simon the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Hi Duncan
The radiator was replaced very recently as part of a full overhaul of the cooling system. I suspect the grille would have been replaced with the bonnet. The work was done by a highly experienced classic car specialist (Nigel Cooper Coachworks) as we have always recognised the special quality of a W124, and have wanted and been able to maintain the car fully and correctly throughout its life. The invoices here show the extent of recent investment and the consignor’s report provides an independent view of the car’s condition. The paperwork is with the car and I will check for further details at the weekend. I hope that helps.
With kind regards,
Simon
How much was the bill to repair the car? If it had wings and bonnet it must have had bumper, lights, grille, landing panel, radiator etc. Do you still have a copy of the estimate thanks?

Simon.
The accident the car had resulted in new wings and a bonnet must have been quite hard. Is there any sign at all of overspray from the repaint or were all the ancilliaries and the windscreen removed together with all the rubber parts ?
Many thanks
AJ
Hello AJ
The circumstances were a roundabout at which the lorry in front started to move off, my wife followed and then the lorry suddenly stopped again to give way. So it was a walking pace event, but just enough to crease the front ends of the wings and leading edge of the bonnet, so cheaper to replace than repair and with the bonus that the W124’s known rust spots were totally replaced. The work was done by a long-established classic car specialist (Nigel Cooper) and there is no overspray on any rubber or ancillaries under the bonnet. I hope that reassures.
Best regards
Simon
This reply was drafted from memory and is incorrect. Please see my later answer to AJ / sumo31251 for an accurate description of events. Thank you.
Hello AJ
I must correct my previous answer, now with access to the paperwork. Time plays tricks with memory and I had conflated two things.
The invoice from 2008 clearly states ‘replace nearside front wing’, when we took advantage to respray the entire car. It further states ‘to remove door handles, mouldings and seals, rear bumper assembly, hood closing panel, rear weather seals, rear lamps, badges, aerial and lower side mouldings’.
There was no other damage because contact was only with underside of a concrete mixer. Wing £187, respray £2810 (paint and labour). The bonnet, lights, grille all remain original from new.
I hope this reassures that this ‘incident’ really was very minor. Another invoice from 2004 confirms both wings were in fact replaced then for typical W124 corrosion reasons.
All invoices are present and clearly show the above.
I apologise for getting this wrong in my previous answer.
With kind regards
Simon
Only thanks.
Also just checking it Doesn’t have Air Con fitted as cant see an Eco / AC button on dashboard ?
Hello again
No it doesn’t, but to be honest in warm weather the drop down roof or pillarless windows do a pretty good job! The heating system is excellent in winter and both front seats are heated.
Best regards
Simon
hello, i assume the car is HPI clear and the bump / accident in 2008 was not recorded against the car ? thankyou
Hello
Yes that’s correct – never any finance and no insurance categorisation of the bump.
Hope that helps
Best
Simon
Hello
Please see my latest replies to sumo31251 and to Duncan Kerr for further information on the very minor bump in 2008. It involved only gentle contact with the ‘bonnet height’ underside of a concrete mixer, causing replacement only of the n/s/f wing.
I hope this helps.
With best regards
Simon
