With the R129, Mercedes-Benz combined 90s boxy good looks and thorough engineering to create a bonafide modern classic.

The ultimate 90s cruiser, the R129 almost took the accolade of car of the year at launch. First introduced to the world in 1989 with production running until 2001, the boxy body and large alloys were a step-change in the design from the R107 and hold their own place, now considered an already matured modern classic.

This example has been owned by Mike for the past 3 years and has spent the majority of its life Spain and the South of France, with the mileage reading just ~52,800 it can be considered a low mileage example too.

Meet the owner

A massive leap in modernisation from my TR6, the SL can eat up the mile like a GT.

Planning to return to the UK, Mike disposed of his beloved LHD TR6 after 20 years of ownership. During the house sale delay he came across the SL320 which fitted his future classic criteria.

However, since moving back to the UK, the car has seen very little use and so Mike thinks it's better that a new owner can use the car as it was intended. He will be happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Boxy good looks finished in an elegant 'Smoke Silver', the R129 has matured well with age.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with Mercedes-Benz 16” Monkar wheels, they look in really great condition. Fitted with Dunlop sport 01 tyres that look good. The tyres would benefit from a deep clean and some tyre paint to match the rest of the car.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks really good, all the panel gaps and shut lines along with the doors, bonnet, and boot look good too.

The soft top is in good order, we captured it opening and closing as it should.

Paint

Mercedes-Benz Smoke Silver is the colour of choice on this car, a rare but beautiful choice of paint that really shows the boxy lines.

When walking around the car we noticed some very light stone chips, a patch on the bonnet, and a few marks on the wing mirrors.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition all around the car and in line with the mileage - the trim/rubber seals look great too.

Interior

Finished in full cream leather, this interior allows you to travel in first-class luxury.

Seats and Carpets

The cream leather seats look great and in line with the mileage and age of the car, the drivers seat exhibits minor creases as you would expect.

Both front seats are fully electrically adjustable, the boot lining appears in good order too, with a full-size spare wheel underneath and the wind deflector (and boot cover) included within the sale.

Dashboard

The black dashboard is free from cracking, marks or major wear and is in line with the great condition of the rest of the car, very clean and smart.

The instrument cluster is a similar story with all the numbers are clean, clear and legible. Please view the images to see the dashboard in more detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Just as you would expect, a classic 4-spoke '90s Mercedes wheel greats you as you climb inside.

The stock large steering wheel makes it easy to move, almost with one finger, and looks in excellent condition along with the automatic gear selector.

Mechanics

228BHP to tap into, the 3.2L straight-six offers all the power you'd ever want in this luxury drop-top.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.2L engine produces 228BHP at peak revs, it might not be the big brawny V8, but it still packs a punch through the rear wheels for a great drive.

Mike has used this car sparingly over his 3 years of ownership, he mentions it’s a very powerful yet economical engine choice and assures us it’s never skipped a beat during his ownership.

Watch the cold start video to view Mike turning the car over and letting it run up to temperature without any issues.

Suspension and Brakes

A 2-circuit hydraulic power-assisted braking set-up, Mike reports they perform with plenty of stopping power when required.

The front suspension in this SL320 has independent damper struts whereas the rear suspension has an independent 5-arm multi-link.

The Drive

The ultimate European cruiser, the SL320 will eat up miles with its powerful block and luxuriously smooth interior.

Electrics and Other

The R129 is a leap from the R107, as the cabin and technology was vastly updated with electrically adjustable memory seats, windows, ABS, soft top and safety roll bar just to name a few of the features.

Hydraulics & electrics recently overhauled are in working order, regrettably the multi-cassette holder is missing, although replacements tend to be readily available.

History and Paperwork

The R129 is a bonafide modern classic, this example finished in an attractive colour and a relatively low mileage make it stand out in the sea of SL's available.

The car comes with a healthy amount of receipts, MOT's and service history from the past 25 years. Mike reports having work carried out when required and it's yearly MOT to keep the car roadworthy.

The colour matching hardtop is also included within the sale and will come with its storage stand, for ease of installation. The car also has 2 sets of keys.

Badge was I think an image edition to impress the Ex-Pat Spanish jet set.
The mileage ex tract was on the 9000 mile service cert which was done at 8904 miles & logged in the wrong slot. Not an uncommon thing by European Garages. Full photo Available but substantiated by MOT Certs
