You don't get continental cruisers better than this, thorough engineering with 90s retro styling, the R129 generation is a bonafide modern classic.

Arguably the ultimate cruiser to come out of the 90s, the R129 almost took the accolade of car of the year at launch. First introduced to the world in 1989 with production running until 2001, the boxy body and alloys were a step-change in the design from the R107 and hold their own place, now considered an already matured modern classic.

This SL 320 has been owned by Paul for the last 6 years, and in that time it's spent the majority of its time wrapped up in the garage. With its "Tourmaline Green" paintwork over cream interior and great service history file, we know it'll draw a lot of attention. Paul is now looking for a like-minded R129 enthusiast to take over ownership.

Meet the owner

Paul was in the market for a sporty convertible to enjoy over his retirement, this 90s SL was irresistible.

Coming out of 6 years ownership with Paul, he reports the car has spent the majority of its life out in the dry climate of Faro, Portugal. He purchased the car as a retirement gift to himself, but has only put ~2,000 miles on the clock whilst with him.

The car has been dry stored in his garage over his ownership, which has really helped to maintain the condition of the bodywork and paint. Paul reports the soft-top is a little discoloured, and mentioned that he would apply a coating of Autoglym Convertible Soft Top Clean & Protect before the sale. This R129 is maturing like a fine wine, '90s boxy good looks finished in Tourmaline Green.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with Mercedes-Benz 16” Alamak forged alloys, they look in great condition. Finished with Michelin Pilot HX (dated 2002) at the front and Torneo Stunner's (dated 2005). The tyres are on the older side, yet look to have lots of life still left in them.

Bodywork

All the panel gaps look tight and correct when observing the car, and it comes with the body-coloured hardtop as pictured.

This generation often suffers from corrosion on the wheel arches, and where water sits in between panels. On this example, we didn't observe anything like that, and the underside looks in good condition too due to the dry storage of the car.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in an attractive "Tourmaline Green" paint which looks excellent, an elegant and unique choice that pairs well with the Cream leather interior. Overall the paint is even in finish and colour across all the panels.

We did notice the odd stone chip to the front bumper and chip on the nearside front wing. The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears In line with the rest of the car for its age and mileage, all the panels look great without any cracks, chips, or marks to note.

Interior

A luxurious leather interior that really reflects the build quality and low mileage of this Mercedes-Benz SL.

Seats and Carpets

Full leather electrically adjustable and heated front seats are fitted within this R129 SL320. The cream leather seats look great for the mileage and age of the car, the seats show only the slightest of creases.

The back seats look great and the original Mercedes carpets around the car look great too, overall a smart interior that has been cared for over the years. The door cards match the rest of the interior.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the car, a really nice example. A clean and smart 90s Benz dash and instrument cluster, all the numbers are clean, clear and legible.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a classic 4-spoke '90s Mercedes-Benz steering wheel and automatic gear selector. The large steering wheel adds minimal effort required to manoeuvre this sporty convertible.

Mechanics

The 3.2L straight-six will offer you all the power you'd ever need in a luxury roadster like this.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.2L engine produces ~228BHP, it might not be the big brawny V8, but it still packs more than enough of a punch through to the rear wheels for a great drive.

Paul reports that the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth automatic gearbox powering the rear wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath.

Suspension and Brakes

The front suspension in this SL 320 has independent damper struts whereas the rear suspension has an independent 5-arm multi-link. Paul assures us of a very smooth ride.

The brakes on this car also feature 2-circuit hydraulic power-assisted wheel discs with ABS. It's reported to perform with plenty of stopping power when required.

The Drive

The SL 320 offers a sublime drive, and luxurious cruising that will enable you to cross continents with very little effort. With the power of a 3.2L straight-six under your control simply sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

Electrics and Other

This generation was a real leap from the R107, the cabin and technology was vastly updated with electrically adjustable memory seats, windows, ABS, soft top and anti-roll Wunderbar just to name a few.

Paul reports all the electrics on this car are working as they should to his knowledge.
