Introduction

The Mercedes SL320 is a refined blend of luxury, performance, and timeless design that everybody loves.

Purchased two years ago by myself, an experienced car dealer of 50 years, the R129 generation Mercedes appears to have slipped under the radar of price increases, as they remain very well priced for the quality of the car. The car came with an excellent history, which I have continued to maintain by giving it two services while in my ownership.

Market Auction

Paul, the seller, has created this listing themselves using our free Market Auction tool. Unlike our Curated Auctions, we haven’t photographed the car or written the listing, however we have completed 3 important security checks for your peace of mind.

V5C Checked

Paul provided a copy of the V5C logbook, which we verified against his photo ID for name and address confirmation.

ID Checked

Paul provided his photo ID, which we verified against the name and address on the V5C logbook.

History Checked

History check actioned using HPi, the industry’s top verification service, for finance, write-offs, and stolen records.

Exterior

A cool feature of the SL320 is the removable hardtop, giving you the best of both worlds.

Wheels and Tyres

The car has the original wheels. The faces have a small amount of corrosion, but for their age and mileage, these would be considered to be in good condition.
All four tyres are in like-new condition, having not long been replaced.

Bodywork

The SL's bodywork is in good condition. Walking around the car, I couldn’t see any dings or dents, and the panel gaps all have an equal gap.

The hardtop is removable, and there is a new mohair roof fitted.

Paint

Finished in Green Black metallic, the paintwork presents well. Yes, there are some age-related swirl marks, but nothing appears too deep and could be reduced by a professional detailer.

Glass and Trim

All of the windows are in good order, with no noticeable scratches. The driver's side windscreen has a small chip, which was noted on an MOT in 2023 but does not affect the driver's view.

Interior

Luxurious and comfortable – the SL320 is a nice place to be.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are in good condition. The driver's seat has a small amount of creasing, which is typical for its age and mileage. The door cards are also in good condition.

The carpets are clean and tidy, and there is a set of fitted mats.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition, with no noticeable scuffs or damage.
The odometer reads ~85,340, and no warning lights are displayed.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel has a minor amount of age-related wear, but nothing excessive, and the gear knob is in good condition.

Mechanics

The 3.2-litre inline-six is enough to keep you entertained.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts well and runs with no issues. Being the 3.2-litre, there is plenty of power moving through the gears, and the change is smooth.

Suspension and Brakes

The Mercedes sits nice and level, and out in the car, there are no knocks or bangs coming from the suspension. The brakes bring the car to a stop in a straight line.

The Drive

Ideal for the summer but also perfect for all weathers, thanks to the SL320s removable hardtop. topped off with the 3.2-litre inline-six engine, which delivers effortless cruising and solid reliability. It's classic styling and advanced (for its time) technology.

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear works as it should. There is a small amount of wear showing on some of the switches, and the radio has suffered from a sticky dial.

History and Paperwork

13 service stamps suggest a well-cared-for SL320, which I have continued in my ownership.

The owner's manuals are present, along with 13 stamps in the service book, the last of which was carried out on 20 January 2024 at 85,222 miles. The SL also has a current MOT that is valid until 15 October 2025. Over the past two years, I have replaced a few small items: an ashtray that wasn’t retracting, a nearside door mirror, and a faulty roof catch.

Just in time for the summer months – not that it really matters with the fantastic option of refitting the hardtop for winter – it’s time to enjoy the Mercedes SL320.

From Trade Classics:

This is a Market Auction listing, meaning we have not visited and photographed the car – instead, the seller has supplied the images and written the description. However, we’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID that matches the V5, and also actioned a history check on the vehicle – this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or has any outstanding finance. Note: this does not include a mileage history check.

Viewings are welcomed, so please get in touch with us via the 'contact us' page – we just need to speak to you first on the phone, have you register on the site, and also send in valid photo ID before confirming a suitable time to visit.

Like all our auctions, if there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car – the Buyer's Premium is not refundable in any instance, just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
