Introduction
Alan Stuart
Beautifully engineered, fast and elegant – everything a Mercedes-Benz Grand Tourer should be
The Mercedes-Benz SL500 R129 combines great manners with fantastic performance and the legendary Mercedes-Benz build quality. When introduced in 1989 it replaced the R107 thereby upholding a fine tradition of Grand Touring convertibles. Loved by both the Mercedes faithful and the wider public it remained popular until replaced by the R230 in 2002.
The R129 offered significant innovations including controlled electronic damping, a more modern multi-link rear axle and fully operating electric hood, windows, door mirrors and seats. The 5.0L V8 propels the car to 60MPH in 6.1 seconds and to a top speed on 155MPH, with power delivered to the rear wheels through a smooth 5 speed automatic gearbox.
This car is an excellent example of the model. Finished in the fantastic two-tone green-black metallic paint complemented by a beautifully maintained mushroom leather interior, the car presents extremely well. It has full-service history and has been impeccably maintained by its current and previous owners.

I WANT ONEAsk Questions
Good Afternoon Dave80. In response to your questions:
1) I have an invoice dated May 2016 (from the Mercedes Specialist who has looked after the car from about 2008) at 83,111 miles for front brake pads. Also this invoice mentions checking timing chain.
2) I have no documentation regarding any work to suspension.
3) There is indeed a small stain on the passengers seat. I do not know if the invoice for cleaning materials relates to this.
4) I have had the front wings refinished during my ownership (tiny area of paint bubbling and minor associated rust to front corner of both wings just above front bumper. A very common thing on these cars.)
Given that the car is 23 years old and has covered 98,500 miles my view is that the history & provenance of the car is exceptional. This as is explained in the Auction details is why I bought it.
Kindest Regards
Chris
Hi, when were the brakes (pads and discs) last changed? Similarly when was the suspension last refreshed (bushes, control arms, springs, shock absorbers etc) Has the timing chain been replaced too (appreciate it’s just under 100K) but thought I would ask as it’s a big ticket item? Also, on the passenger seat is that a small permanent stain, does that relate to the 2015 Mercedes invoice for cleaner and cleaning agent? Lastly, do you know of any resprays to parts of the car, or are most of the panels original paint? Many thanks,
