Mercedes-Benz's most exclusive luxury coupe with its mighty 5.8L V12 - the CL600 is a modern classic in the making.

This is the second generation of the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class and is based on the W220 S-Class chassis. The totally redesigned CL-class features an array of innovations neatly wrapped in leather and walnut. Mercedes say the CL-Class is designed "for people who believe good just isn't good enough."

The car is equipped with the hydraulic active body control system, more advance than the system used on the S-Class at the time, the system keeps the car level even in fast corners, providing comfort and sport settings and the ride height can be adjusted to three different levels.

This example has been owned by John for the previous 10 years and only has just 1 previous owner before him. He was attracted to the rarity of the CL600 and the silky smooth V12 it packs under the hood.

Meet the owner

I definitely have a type of car that I love, luxury GTs with significant power on tap when needed!

Owned by John for the previous 10 years, he was really attracted to the rarity of the car, only 98 were imported to the UK in 2001 and only 12 '2001 CL-600's' remain licensed in the UK today. Over his ownership, he's covered just under ~20,000 miles, using it as a weekend car.

This is just one of many of his luxury sports cars and now due to age and lack of use, John has now decided to part with the car, he'd like to see the car being used and enjoyed. He'll be happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

A sleek package, this 2 door coupe offers exterior styling to compete with other exotic European models.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 5-spoke star AMG wheels, we love the aggressive stance they offer the car. They appear in fair good condition, with the slightest signs of curbing and some surface corrosion in areas, a professional refurbishment to bring them in line with the rest of the car would be good.

John has fitted Dunlops SP Sports, which appear in great condition with lots of tread, and are dated 2012/2013.

Bodywork

A sleek package in 2 door coupe form, the CL 600 styling is maturing with age now.

Panel gaps and the quality of the bodywork look good on this example. The only area to mention is the nearside rear inner arch has the slightest signs of bubbling, it's a low mileage example with just 1 previous owner and you can really tell. Take the time to study all the high-resolution images and videos to appreciate the condition of the bodywork.

Paint

Finished in traditional Mercedes-Benz Silver, the paint looks in great condition with an even finish across the whole car. The only area to mention was the front nearside wing, which has the smallest of rub marks and a slight sign of laqueer peel, John takes great pride in all his cars and always makes sure they've been professionally cleaned.

The glass and trim tell a similar story and all look very good as you would expect from a high-performance, well-cared-for modern classic.

Interior

The new CL has been upgraded in all areas, including a more spacious and luxuriously equipped interior.

Seats and Carpets

Black leather fully adjustable seats appear in excellent condition and reflect the use and mileage of the car. The kick plates tell a similar story and present in excellent condition with none of the usual wear.

The car features its original Mercedes-Benz mats, which are clean and free from any major wear. John has kept rubber mats over these Mercedes originals to maintain the condition.

Dashboard

The modernised black leather on walnut dashboard presents very well and looks excellent along with the rest of the black interior.

One item to note is an aftermarket sat nav adhesive mount has been applied to the dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a classy yet multi-functional steering wheel the condition of the wheel is great, and shows very little signs of use. One really cared for example of the rare CL600.

Mechanics

The centerpiece of the car the 5.8L, 60-degree SOHC 36-valve V12 twists out 362BHP without any stress.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by a 5.8L V12 this car is not short on power at all, and thanks to the cylinder-deactivation system the V12 drinks much less than its predecessor. John maintains the battery's health by leaving it on a CTek trickle charge when the car is not in use.

The car started first time in 'cold start' which we conducted for the mechanical video, watch this along with a review of the engine bay and underside.

Suspension and Brakes

The car is fitted with drilled discs and an active hydraulic suspension system that keeps the car level under acceleration, braking, or corning. The car offers adjuments to ride height without intruding on the CL600's comfortable ride.

Maintenance on the brakes and suspension has been carried out in line with the schedule John tells us, ensuring that everything works as expected.

The Drive

'Luxurious' and 'Powerful' are two words we think best describes the CL600's driving experience. You won't want to ride in anything else after owning this beast. The V12 is a silky smooth affair, these types of engines are becoming rarer by the day.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted a whole range of electrical features from the factory including sat-nav. John tells us that to his knowledge all electrical items work as expected.
