Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

A technological masterpiece, the CL600 represents a perfect opportunity to experience decadence and V12 performance.

The Mercedes Benz CL-Class was placed as a premier 2-door coupe to showcase their luxury Grand Tourer. Introduced in 2006, it is packed with technological features and driver aids, demonstrating Mercedes' attention to detail with comfort and refinement. While half of the CL’s appeal is its effortless application, which acts passively in the background, the C216 series CL model focuses on the occupants and safety. It features an innovative predictive braking system, adaptive cruise control, and parking assist for the driver, while the passengers can enjoy the premium sound system, TV and massaging seats. The CL-Class was fitted with a wide array of V8 engines, but the CL600's pièces de résistance was the 510BHP M275 twin-turbo V12 engine. While limited to 155MPH, the silky smooth 5.5-litre engine offers devastating performance and torque, with derivatives used to power numerous contemporary supercars like the Pagani Huayra and Fisker Tramonto.

Specified from new with the AMG body styling option, this 2007 CL600 is finished in "Metallic Iridium Silver", with an "Exclusive Black" leather interior and black ash trim. Fitted with the 5-speed 5G-Tronic automatic gearbox, this CL600 comes with main dealer service history since 2008. There are also over £12,000’s worth of maintenance invoices over this same period. Its most recent service was carried out around 1,000 miles ago and has an MOT valid until October 2024.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Gordon the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I have been driving Mercedes CLs for the past 18 years and have never experienced any problems with them.

Gordon took on his second CL ~10 years ago, motivated by the prestige of the brand quality, its comfort, reliability, elegant styling and rarity. He concludes that it's not only a relaxed motorway cruiser but also has a bite to it. He describes the V12 engine as imperious.

Furthermore, he can vouch for the impressive safety of the CL, having walked away unharmed after being hit by an articulated truck in his previous CL. He has kept on top of the maintenance, taking it to the Mercedes-Benz main dealer on an almost yearly basis for servicing and he tell us the car looks and drives exactly like it did when he first bought it. He is retiring from business and regrettably has no further need for this car and so it comes to sale with us. Gordon will be on hand to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The pillarless styling and curvacious rear screen harks back to the vintage Mercedes coupes of the past.

Wheels and Tyres

The 5-spoke 20” alloys with embossed AMG lettering display mild age related marks. These appear to be mostly kerb scuffs, so all would be perfect candidates for a refurb.

The car is fitted with a full set of Continental Sport Contact tyres. All are less than ~6 years old, with legal tread. The nearside front tyre has a small sidewall knick.

Bodywork

The exterior presents very well, with no dents or visual signs of corrosion noticed. The shut lines and panel flow are excellent. The passenger door soft close action still works a treat, with minimal effort required. All of the struts and hinges are up to the task. The underside, suspension mounts, boot floor and engine bay are solid with no suggestions of damage.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The metallic iridium silver paint has an even coverage, with a decent lustre and bears all of the positive evidence of indoor storage. There are a handful of minor paint chips on the nose of the car and a mild scuff noted on the top of the front bumper. The offside corner of the rear bumper has a more pronounced mark.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, with some mild lamination damage spotted on the top edge of the rear passenger side glass panels. The lights and lenses are in good condition.

There are no significant issues with the rest of the trim, although the lower side panel chrome-plated strips show signs of age. The front bumper will need a minor adjustment to fit flush too.

Interior

The sound insulation and the richness of the cabin is a credit to Mercedes's high levels of quality.

Seats and Carpets

The heated and ventilated cooling seats are neatly presented, with minor signs of age and the odd mark in places but certainly above the expectations of a car of this age and mileage.

The carpets and mats are clean with no damage or dampness, there is a little wear noted in the driver’s side footwell.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent condition, with no significant marks or scuffs. Finished with the black ash veneer trim option, the facia and controls are in good shape and only need a detailed valet to make it perfect.

Gordon is unsure if all the functions work in the car, but the air-con was working. The leather trim and stitching have lasted very well, with no distracting marks spotted on the panels. The door cards and Alcantara headlining are in good order.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The heated leather and wood steering wheel is neatly presented with mild signs of age but free of any damage and finishes off a very positive impression of the cabin.

Mechanics

Made for the unrestricted autobahns, there’s still plenty of pleasure to be had from the V12.

Engine and Gearbox

The warning lights remained off after the press of the ignition button with nothing flagged up for the rest of our visit. The engine idles sweetly, with no undulations or observations of unwanted noises. The exhausts were free of blowing or unwanted smoke.

The car was leak-free on the day and Gordon confirmed that his underground storage allocation displays no signs of fluid leaks, the engine is neatly presented too. The 5-speed 5G-Tronic automatic gearbox functions without any reported faults. Watch the video to see and hear the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The car's road-holding and ride quality is superb, with no notable mechanical noises heard from the wheels, around town the ride was absorbent and hushed despite the uneven roads.

The car's braking is confident, with no pulling from the wheels and no observations of vibrations or fade.

The Drive

Housed within a technological showcase, the bi-turbo V12 engine power is the main appeal of this lavish GT. Of course, you don’t need those 510 horses of power but it's reassuring to know that it's there and they're surprisingly controllable to manage. Gordon told us that he rarely uses the car for local or short journeys, offering a glimpse of his mechanical sympathy for the CL.

Surprisingly agile and docile to drive on urban roads, we were sadly denied any meaningful experience of the impressive performance, but it was very clear to see how composed and smooth the car is at 30 to 50mph. The Active Body Control suspension does so much to iron out any negative ride motions and you'd swear you're on rails.

Electrics and Other

The car comes with many options from factory, such as; heated steering wheel, heated and cooling seats, rear window roller blind, park assist and rear camera, keyless go, premium sound system with TV/DVD, cruise control+.

The offside rear passenger glass window doesn’t retract but the sunroof is functional, Gordon told us he is unsure if all other gadgets are in working order. He told us the car has a tyre pressure warning system which works well.

History and Paperwork

Thanks to its regular main dealer maintenance, the car has run without issue in Gordon's ~10 years of ownership and Mercedes-Benz service history back to 2008.

It comes with over £12,000 worth of receipts, all of which come from the Mercedes main dealer aside from the tyres. Over the ~10 years of Gordon's ownership, invoices show that the spending has been on maintenance and health checks covering servicing, brakes, suspension and steering components. This correlates with a car that has been used regularly for motorway journeys. Recent spending includes battery investigation and a boot lock fault. A visual health check was completed on 04.10.2023 to prepare the car for sale, the brake fluid, oil filter, pollen filter and both front and rear batteries were changed at this time. Gordon told us the new owner should service the car when it's due to keep it running well like he has.

The car comes with its original owner's manual, wallet and its pre-delivery inspecion checklist. The service info is digitalised but there are Mercedes records back to 2008 and has an MOT to October 2024. Please note that the car will not be sold with the private plate and will be presented with an age-related number plate.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
