Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner and Content Editor

The SL model range has evolved over the years - producing some of the most beautiful looking Mercedes-Benz to date.

Originally launched way back in 1954, the SL was a two-seater roadster which has grown in popularity to become one of the most iconic models in Mercedes-Benz history, providing the perfect mixture of performance and luxury. Over the years the cars were available as a soft top convertible, then moving forward with the addition of a removable hardtop as well. This was a good idea and perfect for the winter months with the hardtop making it more like a normal bodied car, although it was a two person job to lift off and refit the roof.

In 2002, Mercedes stepped up the game with the R230 SL, with a whole host of technological wizardry added to the grand tourer. One of the main changes was the fully convertible hardtop roof at the touch of a single button. You could be sitting at the traffic lights and within 16-20 seconds the roof would be down ready to enjoy the sunshine. This main feature alone proved a huge selling point for the luxurious German two-seater roadster.

Glennys has enjoyed the luxury and performance of the SL350 for a couple of years now, and with it getting very little use over the pandemic, it has been decided that it makes more financial sense to part with it rather than have it sitting not being used.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Glennys the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

We are a family of Mercedes-Benz lovers and the SL350 was the perfect addition for use on the weekends.

Glennys purchased the SL350 in May 2019, and has covered around ~9,000 miles since she took ownership, with most of these covered in the first year. The SL hasn’t been getting the use it should with lockdowns over the past 18 months.

This is what has led to the sale of the convertible. A hard top convertible perfect for the summer months and colder brisk sunny winters days, drop the roof at the touch of a button and away you go. Glennys will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Finished in Metallic Silver, a colour choice that suits this era and keeps it looking fresh to this day.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels on the SL350 have been refurbished at some point which has freshened them up. Overall, the wheels present well with some paint has peel around one or two of the bolts on the split rims, and there are also a couple of kerb marks to the nearside wheels.

The tyres are all matching and have only covered a few thousand miles.

Bodywork

Walking around the Mercedes, the panel gaps all align correctly and straight for the bonnet, boot and doors. The car is nice and straight down the sides with no car park injuries that we could see.

We do need to mention the car suffered a bump to the rear left hand corner in 2016. This was repaired at Mercedes-Benz Worcester through an insurance claim. The inner edge of the rear nearside wheel arch has an area of surface corrosion/reddening of the paint. The hard top looks to work as quickly as it should, operating smoothly as it opens and closes - please have a look at the exterior review video to see it in action.

Paint

The Metallic Silver paintwork is in good condition with just a few stone chips to the bonnet and a small scuff to the front bumper, which has been touched in. Down the sides, there are just some age-related light scratches which look like they could be polished out with the right equipment.

The rear quarter which was repaired, does have some micro blistering on the top edge. Please see the image gallery for more detailed shots.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition to the sides and rear, with no obvious scratches which we could see. The windscreen does have 3 small stone chips, which may be able to be repaired, but this would need checking by a professional to confirm.

The black trim around the windows is all finished nicely, which looks to have no corrosion under the black finish, as you sometimes get. The headlights and fog lights are free from any cracks and the headlights are nice and clear without showing signs of any discoloration. The rear lights also appear free from any chips.

Interior

Black leather graces the SL350 for your luxury and comfort.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the Mercedes are in good order with just some minor creasing to the driver’s side, and a small amount of wear to the driver’s side bolster, which is in keeping with a well kept car for the mileage.

The carpets are in excellent condition thanks to them being covered with Mercedes-Benz mats. The mats have some light wear, mainly to the driver’s side as you would expect. There are a few scuff marks to the stainless sill protector, that said this is an easy item to replace.

The boot area is nice and clean with the cover in place to protect the hardtop. Under the carpet is the spare wheel.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition. The instruments have an odometer reading of ~83,293. There are a couple of warning symbols which are showing. One is for low tyre pressure, the seller reports this has been like this since the new tyres were fitted, it could be just a case of resetting it. The other is for a Service B which is 478 days over, but it’s not due on mileage. This is down to it not being used and the days have crept on during the pandemic.

The radio is connected to a CD multi-changer which is located in the storage compartment behind the passenger seat, and this is all reported to be working correctly. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed shots.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good condition with minimal wear, other than some light shining to the finish in the top half of the wheel. The buttons are in good condition, with no wearing to the lettering.

The gear knob has the Mercedes emblem to the top which is in good condition, and the gaiter is free from and splits. Please have a look at the photos and video provided in the media pack for a detailed view.

Mechanics

A 3.5 V6 with an automatic gearbox - the perfect combination for some excitement and economy when cruising.

Engine and Gearbox

The V6 in this lovely SL350 fires up perfectly at the first flick of the key, and sounds fantastic exiting through the twin exhausts. There are no untoward noises to be heard from the well serviced V6.

With ~268BHP on tap, the SL350 is reported to pull well through all of the gears, with the gear change being nice and smooth all the way through the range.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension sits nice and level and the car is reported to handle nicely, with no noises coming from the suspension components.

Drilled discs at the front bring the SL to a halt nice and straight. There is a small lip on the edge of the disc, but they still look to be good for plenty of miles.

The Drive

The two seater convertible is a pleasure to own, offering the best of both worlds for summer and winter with the convertible hardtop. At the touch of a button you can drop the roof in around 16 seconds. The 3.5 litre V6 has ample power and performance to offer any spirited driver plenty of smiles for many miles in the German marque.

Electrics and Other

All the switchgear is in good condition with no obvious wear to the lettering of the buttons.

Everything, including the satellite navigation, is reported to be working as it should, although the maps for the navigation may need to be updated.

History and Paperwork

A good service history shows the Mercedes has been regularly maintained since the beginning, presented in smart condition, this R320 offers great value with a competitive reserve.

The SL has 8 services stamped in the book. There are some previous MOT certificates, with the most recent one valid until the 22nd March 2022. There have been no advisories noted on previous MOT’s since 2011, and even then, it was only for the number plates noted as deteriorating.

The original hand book and Mercedes wallet are present, along with the service and information book. The V5 shows 4 previous keepers.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and the vehicle is HPI clear, other than the Cat D insurance loss claim in 2016 as a result of the car being hit to the rear left.

As I was told when I purchased the car it was run into at the back n/s corner as it was parked in traffic, it was body damage only and no mechanical.
Like I said it’s what I was told but I don’t have any photos to show, trust this is a help.

Is it definitely a cat d insurance registered as this might indicate a insurance write off and could increase cost of insurance. Have you any more details of damage it suffered

I don’t have anything more on the bump the car had as I bought it after it was repaired but all I can say is I have had no problem with the car getting it insured.
The damage was to the rear as stated and as I was told it was only Bodley damage with no mechanical damage, sorry I cannot inlighten you any more as I don’t know
