Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Take a trip down memory lane and enjoy some best of British motoring history with this 1953 MG TF.

The last of the square riggers, the TF gained its title due to the strong resemblance to the pre-war Midgets. The TF was initially launched in 1953, and production lasted for two years, whereby 9,600 cars were produced. These TF's have a vintage feel to match their sporting looks, with better road holding than its early T-series siblings. The car was fitted with the revised suspension to handle better in the corners.

This example is coming to market from a private collection in Florida. Spending most of its life in the sun has kept the dreaded tin worm to a minimum, which means structurally the condition is excellent and perfect for anyone looking for the 50s British motoring experience. It has been imported in to the UK in August 2020 by the same owner in America, and so shows 0 former keepers here in the UK.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Ben the custodian, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

The fantastic lines of the MG create something quite special from the British manufacturer, making it a joy to look at.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels are in great looking condition with no apparent signs of corrosion. The knockoffs are in good order, with a bright finish to the chrome. The tyres are matching and have a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the MG TF is in great shape. There are no dings or dents, and the doors and bonnet align well, opening and closing as expected. When you look at the underside pictured in the "Mechanics" section too, you'll see a very clean and corrosion looking free chassis. The removable roof fits nice and tight, along with the sliding side windows, which attach to the doors easily. There is also a full tonneau cover which again fits tightly.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The MG does look to have been repainted at some point in a similar shade to British Racing Green. There is the odd mark and chip here and there, but generally, the car presents very well.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen looks to be in good condition with no apparent scratches to mention. The side windows and rear windows are in quite good condition, with just a small amount of discolouration often seen on plastic windows. There are a couple of marks on the driver's side window where they have been stored.

The chrome work on the MG is in excellent condition with minimal tarnishing. The luggage rack has a small amount of surface corrosion, but this is to the underside.

The headlights are in good order with no damage to the lenses, and the same can be said for the indicators and rear lights.

Interior

Simple yet effective - what more could you possibly need driving this British classic?

Seats and Carpets

The MG TF’s interior is thought to be original. The tan leather seats are in good condition with just a small amount of patina showing, which is in-keeping with the age of the vehicle. The door panels are also clean and free from any damage.

The carpet is in very good condition with no real signs of excess wear for the age. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished to match the seats and is free from any damage. The instruments look in good condition and are working as they should. The needle on the speedometer does bounce a little, and the odometer shows a reading of 20,692 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in nice condition with just a tiny amount of wear and some very slight cracking around where the rim meets the spokes, and the MG centre has some fine crazing to the plastic. The gear knob is also thought to be original and in good order with no real wear.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

Fitted with a 1250cc four-cylinder engine - the MG might not be the quickest, but it’s the charm that counts.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1250cc fires up on the button and sounds great with no untoward noises. The engine bay presents well with the engine painted red and a polished aluminium rocker cover.

The gearbox has a smooth change, and no untoward noises are coming from the transmission.

Suspension and Brakes

The MG gives a firm but comfortable ride, as is the case with most vehicles from this era. There are no knocks or bangs coming from either corner of the car.

The brakes are working as well as they should, and Ben reports the car to come to a halt in a straight line.

The Drive

On the road, the MG TF is fantastic fun to drive and doesn't fail to make you smile. Of course, it's also great to receive a nod and smile of appreciation from passers-by who, deep down, know just how much fun you’re having in this 50s classic.

Electrics and Other

The electrics in the MG are minimal, as you would expect from a vehicle of this age. The switches for the lights and wipers are working correctly, and their condition is good, with just a tiny amount of wear in keeping with the age of the vehicle.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

A true British classic brought back home after spending all of its life in the Florida sunshine, presented in lovely condition benefiting from the warmer and drier climate.

Unfortunately as is often the case from imported vehicles, the car has no real paperwork history besides the V5 and other import documentation, including the NOVA certificate and a letter from the MG Octagon Car Club confirming its identity.

It really is a great car to own and will bring enormous pleasure to the next lucky owner. Easily usable as a weekend car or taken to a classic car show. Whichever you decide, it will be well appreciated.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
