Introduction
Darren Rungasamy
If its styling doesn't bowl you over, then the perky performance and agility will.
Considered the most agile and lively of MGs, the sleek streamlined styling of the MGA betrays its T-Type roots, combining mechanical simplicity with the universal appeal of open-top motoring. Only 6,000 of the approximately 100,000 produced MGAs were sold brand new in the UK, a time when export markets were regarded as more significant than domestic consumption. Genuine RHD MK1 cars, particularly in 1600 open top form have long become one of the most prized of the MGAs. Propelled by the robust 1588cc B-Series BMC engine with twin H4 type SU Carburettors, the engine note, road handling, and driving position all simply add to the car's inherent appeal.
This 1960 MK1 is presented in the appealing Dove Grey colourway and the rich deep tones of the red cabin. Restored close to its original spec in the mid-'90s the car has only covered ~8;000 miles with ~£15,000 worth of spending since then. It retains its original 1960 logbook and comes with a British Motor Industry Heritage certificate to authenticate its originality.

Hi, can you tell me, is the mga fitted with any fiberglass body panels?
Hello Rumpledinkie,
To my knowledge, there are no fiberglass body panels. Also, I have looked through the historical invoices; the only reference I can see to any panels are repairs to both front wing panels in July 1990, however there is no further detail on the nature of the repair.
Thanks,
James
Hi James thanks for the reply, I understand that you may not have been aware but on close inspection of the photos it does indeed look like at least the passengers rear wing is a fiberglass replacement, as the fiberglass can be seen on the lower edge where a bit has snapped off, photo 56 I think shows it. Not a major problem in itself as Iam not a stickler for originality, still interested. Thanks.
Hi Rumpledinkie,
Would you mind sending the Trade Classics team an annotated screenshot of the image you are referring to, highlighting where on the lower edge you are looking? I have looked at image 56 of the 163 exterior images, however I am unable to locate where you are referring to.
I will then be able to investigate further.
Many thanks,
James
Hi james, I have just sent them a message, the photos I refer to are 56 and 57 of the mechanical images, thanks.
Thank you. I will be back with the car tomorrow afternoon, so will take a closer look then, and respond with my findings.
Hi Rumpledinkie,
I have just got to the car and done a ‘tap test’ of all panels. My hearing isn’t the best, however, I have concluded that both driver and passenger rear panels are fibreglass. All other bodywork sounds metallic.
Hope that helps.
James
Hi james, thanks for confirming that, I thought that might have been the case, regards
Hello James, your Mga is a nice looking one which has peaked my interest. It looks from the photos like the front bumper alignment isn’t quite as it should be with either the driver side bumper being dropped or the wing being too high. Do you have any insight into why this is? Thanks James
Hello ReedJJ,
Please excuse the delay in coming back to you. I hadn’t noticed this until you mentioned it, so I’m afraid I don’t have a conclusive explanation for what this may be a result of. I am investigating possible remedies, however, I am yet to find anything conclusive, which isn’t helped by being away from the car for a few days. I will respond again if I find out anything that may be of assistance.
All the best,
James
