Introduction

Who needs excessive power when you have this much personality.

The MG Midget; a charming and affordable British sports car, embodies the essence of classic open-top motoring. A development of the Austin-Healey Sprite, the Midget had already built a reputation for being lightweight, nimble, and fun to drive. By 1970, the model was in its second generation (MKII), featuring improvements in performance and comfort while maintaining its simple, driver-focused character. It was powered by a 1,275cc A-Series engine, producing around 65bhp, which, while modest, was enough to provide lively performance due to the car’s low kerb weight.

With a new body fitted in 2005 by a previous keeper, the car has been used very little since then, covering just over ~1,300 miles in the 20 years since. The Midget comes fresh from around one year ownership with our vendor, it also comes with a current MOT valid until 01.08.2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Phil the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I fancied a classic car, and the MG Midget was the perfect choice for me.

Growing up, Phil had several classic cars over the years, which he had enjoyed. Last year, on a nostalgia trip, he decided that an MG Midget would be a good idea and set off in search of the ideal classic. He came across this lovely restored Midget at a local garage, which had taken the car in after the owner passed away.

Phil had the choice of two: this one, fully restored, or another which needed a full restoration. Phil took the sensible option with the restored MG, as it was ready to use and enjoy.

Phil will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Small in size, big in character – this 1970 MG Midget wears chrome bumpers and a cheeky grin like a true British classic.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels, painted silver, are in good condition, and the chrome spinners have a bright finish with a small amount of tarnishing. All of the tyres are in good condition, with a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery for a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork is in superb condition thanks to having a new bodyshell fitted in 2005. The panel gaps appear equal and matching, and we spotted no dings or dents when looking around the car.

We've provided high-resolution images and videos detailing our observations, so please take the time to review all media files for a comprehensive view of the car’s condition.

Paint

The paintwork presents well and is finished in what is thought to be British Racing Green. There are no real chips to mention, as the car hasn’t had a great amount of use over the past few years.

Images are taken from various angles to present the car as you would see it in person. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own opinion on the paint’s condition.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition, with only the usual minor age-related marks as you would expect. The chrome quarter window frames have a light amount of tarnishing but nothing excessive.

Phil had a new beige roof made and fitted in July 2024; therefore, this is in excellent condition - he also has the original black roof and a tonneau cover.

Interior

A beige interior with a British Racing Green exterior – the perfect mix for a British classic.

Seats and Carpets

The Midget’s vinyl seats are in excellent condition, with no damage noted. Both door cards are finished in the same material and are also in excellent condition.

The carpets have been replaced and are in excellent condition, with no signs of any wear.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard has a textured finish and is in excellent condition. All of the instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of ~00,602 miles, which is said to be ~100,602 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel makes navigating the nimble MG Midget a pleasure.

There is also a matching wooden gear knob, both of which are in excellent condition.

Mechanics

Fitted with the original BMC A-Series 1,275cc engine – perfect for the little Midget.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1,275cc engine fires up with a little choke and runs smoothly, with no issues reported by Phil. The car has been given a service with new spark plugs, an air filter, and oil.

Fitted with a four-speed gearbox, the change is smooth, with no untoward noises coming from the transmission.

Suspension and Brakes

The brakes have been overhauled and bring the car to a stop in a straight line as they should. Out on the road in the car, the suspension is firm without being crashy, and we didn't notice any knocks or bangs coming from the underside, even on the UK’s pothole-ridden roads.

The Drive

It’s easy to see why people love the British classic MG Midget. Wind in your hair, the low seating position makes you feel like you’re going faster than you are, even without breaking speed limits, and not forgetting the nods of admiration from fellow classic car enthusiasts.

Electrics and Other

All switchgear appears to be in good condition and is reportedly working correctly.

History and Paperwork

Handy workshop manuals are a nice extra for the next custodian who likes a little fettle.

Unfortunately, the paperwork prior to Phil’s ownership had been lost. On 02.08.2024, Phil took the car for an MOT, which it passed with a couple of minor advisories. These notes on the MOT, although only a couple of things, led Phil to have the underside overhauled, rectifying any issues that were addressed. ~£1,100 later, and the underside is superb, having had many new parts fitted, as seen on the invoices in the gallery. Phil has owned the car for around one year and it comes with a current MOT valid until 01.08.2025.

A charming British classic that benefits from a new body and a recent overhaul of the underside makes it a contender for anyone looking for a classic MG Midget.

We’ve conducted our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and have also actioned a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional check by HPI that highlights whether the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: This does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our view of the car based on information from the seller above. As you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail—this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything in this listing to assess the vehicle's condition.

Viewings are also welcomed for all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time—we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming. If there's anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can’t be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car—just like in a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
