Introduction

Tom Brett
Content Editor

A stalwart when it comes to British classic cars, the MG MGB GT. It has all those classic looks, but also practicality to use it daily.

This stunning 2+2 coupe is one of those great runarounds, perfect for the weekend or even as a daily driver. Introduced in October 1965, production continued all the way till 1980, in total MG produced over 520,000 MGB's in the different variants.

The design was by Pininfarina, incorporating that all new ‘hatchback’ style of the time. This brand new design allowed the car to still be used as a station wagon, but introduce the shape and style of a coupe. The MGB GT came with a rear bench seat and far more luggage space than the roadster.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Felix, the owner, having photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I have always kept the car in an underground garage to ensure it stays in as good as condition as possible.

After owning for 3 1/2 years Felix will be sad to see the MGB go. As he hasn't used the car much recently, he believes finding a new owner is the best option. He has loved how affordable the car is to maintain and was very happy to find this example that was fully serviced prior to the sale.

During his time with the car, he has covered some ~1,300 miles in just over three years, occasional use when the mood suits.

Exterior

An instantly recognisable MG, that rear hatch designed by Pininfarina with the glass a classic touch.

Wheels and Tyres

Original MGB GT Rostyle wheels, wrapped in Firestone tyres. Some of the tyres were changed in 2019, maintaining excellent tread having covered minimal mileage since.

The wheels themselves show their age and would benefit from refurbishment, take a look at the photos for a detailed view.

Bodywork

The demand for a hardtop version of the MGB Roadster was answered by MG, and well received by their audience.

We saw no dents or bumps across the well designed classic and the shut lines look generally good. Over the years the car looks to have had remedial work actioned when needed, as you'll see in the photos.

Paint

Finished in red paint, the finish looks even and correct across all panels. As you can see from the photos, there are some areas which are not perfect. For instance, remedial work looks to have taken place on the driver's door, whilst some paint below the "MGB" badge on the rear has some cracking present.

The car was resprayed to red from yellow in 1987 through a previous owner's request. Felix is including a lightweight body cover in the sale too.

Glass and Trim

All looks in great condition as can be seen in the photos, there is some very light scratching on the driver's side window..

All chrome work looks mainly free from corrosion, only a few areas such as the overriders on the bumpers seem to show some slight pitting that comes with age.

Interior

A classic MG interior, Smiths dials and gauges and lots of black vinyl to contrast the exterior.

Seats and Carpets

The original black seats look excellent for the age of the car, 49 years old now, the benefit of vinyl.

Still looking comfortable, they will provide the new owner with some satisfaction and the comfort they deserve. The car comes with a brand new set of seat covers which can replace the originals if desired. The carpets are clean in preparation for sale, but do show the age of the car somewhat having lost their colour over time.

Dashboard

Keeping with the black theme, everything looks crisp and legible, especially the industry-standard Smith's dials that look great. A simple speed/tachometer extends beyond to the fuel tank and pressure gauges.

Having been regularly cleaned and serviced throughout Felix's ownership everything looks in good order.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both look to be in good condition in line with the age and mileage of this MGB.

Mechanics

The MG MGB GT, featuring the 1.8L 4 cylinder engine, a top speed 5MPH faster than the roadster at 105MPH.

Engine and Gearbox

A 1,798cc inline-4 engine, the original engine MGB GT's were fitted with. The engine bay area looks as you might expect for a car of this age, a mixture of original and replaced parts over time.

A 4-speed manual gearbox is utilised in the powertrain, we are assured by the seller there are no issues to report in this department.

Suspension and Brakes

Owing much of its superior and predictable handling to the chassis and suspension set up, the MG feels nimble on the roads. The underside of the MG looks in good condition with some surface rust in some areas such as brakes.

The Drive

MGB GT offers year-round classic car entry ownership with bags of club support and access to low-cost upgrades if required.

Instantly recognisable, cosy interior, predictable handling set up with the front-engine, the MGB GT is a well-balanced runaround.

Electrics and Other

All electrics on the car work just as expected with no issues to report from the seller. The car has has new plugs and the distributor serviced in the last year or so. The battery was replaced at the end of 2019 and it comes with a drip charger.

History and Paperwork

A great little runaround that can take care of that classic car itch.

Prior to the sale of the vehicle to the current owner, Felix, the previous owner commissioned a full service that tended to the corrosion taking place on the floor pan, as well as replacing spark plugs, brake pads and the usual filters etc, please see the invoices in the history gallery.

We've actioned out usual checks in the shape of; ID, V5C, HPi.
