Introduction

Kristina Leikaite
Professional Consigner

The tough, fun, and timeless British MGB finished in a deep blue is arguably the perfect summer classic.

Introduced to the world in 1962 and produced until 1980, the soft-top sports car formula of the MGB stayed relatively simple throughout. A B-series engine now produced 95bhp at 5400rpm a big step up from its predecessors. It was hugely successful with its handsome looks, honest charm, and straightforward mechanics, shortly becoming Britain's best-selling sports car.

This example is coming out of 4 years of ownership, and has just been through a light bit of recommissioning work having been in storage, it's now ready for the brighter days ahead.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kristina after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The MGB plays such a big part in motoring history, it's been Davids passion keeping this classic on the road.

David's loved owning this MGB Roadster for the past 4 years, and over that time he's invested time and money into keeping the car in the condition you see it in today. The car's just had ~£700 spent on it with his favourite specialist classic sports garage, Willow Triumph LTD in Darlington, a light recommission to get the car ready for sale.

The car was fully rebuilt in 1994, and since looks great today in its blue paint with a brand new navy convertible hood. Due to lack of use over the past year, David is now looking to part with the car and find a like-minded MGB fan to take over ownership. He'll be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

A compact classic, the design was simplified from its predecessor and accentuated with chrome trim.

Wheels and Tyres

The Minator 8-spoke alloys look in excellent condition, free from any curbing marks or damage. They add period-correct charm to the MGB.

Each wheel is wrapped in Yokohama rubber which looks great all-round, with plenty of tread on them. Nice to see some exciting rubber on a car like this. View the images and video for the detail.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks excellent on this MGB with no noticeable or obvious corrosion. The shut lines and panel gaps all looking good from a car from the '70s. David reports the boot, doors, and bonnet hang of their hinges well and shut as you would expect.

David had a new hood fitted on the car a couple of years ago, and that looks in great condition too. Please take a look at the exterior videos for a 360° detailed tour of the bodywork on this car.

Paint

The respray the car received is great quality, the finish still excellent today. We didn't observe any major hazing or flat paint with even coverage across each panel. Please take a look at the photographs to fully appreciate the attention to detail.

Glass and Trim

The chrome trim around the car looks great too. And the glass appears in line with the rest of the car.

Please view the images and photos to appreciate this MGB.

Interior

Classy walnut dash coupled with black vinly offers timeless good looks.

Seats and Carpets

The seats were re-trimmed with the restoration and appear in excellent condition to this day along with the door cards and headlining. Very little wear was observed in our visit, inline with the rest of the car a lovely interior to sit within.

The carpets appear clean, plush, and free from dirt or wear, please view the images and videos for a look at the interior.

Dashboard

The walnut interior looks great within the MGB, it gives a very elegant and classy appearance inside the cabin. Black dials and gauges supply the driver with all the relevant information, and David reports everything is working as it should to his knowledge.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

We love to see an original MG steering wheel and gear stick too. Both appearing in excellent condition for their age.

Mechanics

Powered by the renowned 1.8L B-Series 4 cylinder, tidy handling combined with excellent performance.

Engine and Gearbox

The MGB is powered by a feisty 4 pot, offering 79BHP and a 0-60 time of 10.8s. David assured us that the engine is running very well, coupled to a smooth gearbox, we filmed a mechanical video during our visit, where we start the car cold, show around the engine bay, and underneath the car. Please take a look for a closer look at the mechanics of the car in more detail.

The car had a big service in 2018, involving engine gasket replacements, new alternator, clutch slave cylinder over and above the usual oil and filter etc. An uprated fan motor was also fitted to help keep the engine cool, take a look at the invoice by Graham Scott Concours who actioned this work.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension in the MGB was much softer than it's predecessor with independent front suspension. David informs us the car drives just as it should and stops on demand too.

The car was fitted with a new rear leaf spring kit in 2018, along with new front brake disc shields and steering rack gaitors. This year, the brakes were overhauled as part of the service work to get the car ready for sale.

The Drive

The archetypal British sports car, offering great handling and performance. David loves getting out and about in the car on weekends, he mentions you really have to drive an MGB to fully appreciate it.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with a modern radio. The electrics and main wiring have had attention spent on them during the restoration. All items are said to be functional.

History and Paperwork

This car has had significant work carried out to keep it in the excellent condition you see today, it's ready to roll.

The car was fully rebuilt in 1994 by F.M. Sports car, all corroded panel sections removed, all attachment areas improved, the front valance, bonnet, out sills, inner sills, castle rails, chassis outriggers, sill end fills, inner wing boxes, top rail sections were repaired along with the floor pan, step sills, doors and boot lids costing ~£7,500.

Since David's ownership, he's taken the car to Willow Triumph LTD a classic and sportscar specialist based in Darlington, and had various work carried out over the past few years. Most recently to get the car tip-top and ready for use and MOT, the brakes were overhauled along with other work to the tune of ~£700. It's a car that is now ready for the bright and dry days we are having.

We have actioned our usual checks; Photo ID, V5C, HPi.

Hi David, can I ask you to confirm if the mileage is genuine from new and can you advise how many previous owners its had?

Hi I have checked the paperwork pictures and for some reason the receipt for a Exchange speedo in January 97 is missing which is in the file and also the V5 stating 8 previous owners. Dave

What is your best guess on total mileage then?

David Younger

I wouldn’t like to guess that from 1972 to 97 as it didn’t concern me with having a exchange engine in 99 and all the work done before and what i have continued with. Dave

Hi I am down in Devon and interested in your car. What is the engine bay like, and the underneath. I noticed a tiny bit of rust on the front headlight is there anything elsewhere.

David Younger

Hi Andy as you can see in the photos and video the engine bay is in good condition, and the underneath there is surface rust as showing in the video on the front suspension which i could have had addressed it but was advised not to as it might have made people think i was trying to cover serious problems which i have left for the next owner to paint or underseal. Yes there’s a tiny bit of rust showing on both headlights but nothing else i have noticed, i hope this helps thank Dave.
