A British favourite - the MG Midget a small car with a huge following.

The Midget was produced by MG from 1961 to 1980. The idea behind it all was to offer a fun sports car to the masses on a budget and MG did just that, and very well we might add.

This is a 1975 1500 example that had a large black plastic-covered bumper fitted to meet US federal regulations. The ride height was also adjusted from the earlier versions, anti-roll bars were fitted and a beefer 1493cc standard SC engine from the Triumph Spitfire was added for more power.

This all-black example stands out from the usual red and green ones you'll see, and has been enjoyed by Paul the owner for the previous 16 years.

Meet the owner

A British sports car from Paul's childhood, he's enjoyed this feisty little sports car.

Paul has always been an MG fan and always desired an MG Midget. When coming across this 1500 example he couldn't resist buying. After many years of ownership, Paul has made the difficult decision to part with the car and find a new owner to enjoy the car as much as he has.

Over his ownership, he's had a lot of work carried out; new hood, servo-brakes, electronic ignition, and many more extras. He has paperwork dating back to 2001 listing all the work carried out and parts purchased. Paul will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Sporty '60s styling - the little pocket rocket with a fresh spray of paint.

Wheels and Tyres

The car has its original sporty MG wheels that are wrapped in rubber with lots of tread left - we really like the sporty stance of the MG Midget.

The wheels are in overall good condition, each one looks free from any major kerbing or marks. They'd could be smartened with a refurb, but they certainly don't show bad signs of ageing - please take a look at the photos to see for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks really good on this example, the condition of the car is in line with its age and mileage. Paul replaced the convertible hood 6 years and reports it's still in excellent condition as you would expect.

Paint

The car has been resprayed from Mustard Yellow to Black. This happened before Pauls ownership, and the black respray looks great and definitely bought a lot of life to the car, the paint is deep in lustre and even in coverage across all the panels.

The car has some marks that have been picked up with use on the front and rear wings as pictured, along with some imperfections coming through and stone and paint chips on leading edges etc. Please see all the images to appreciate the paintwork.

Glass and Trim

All the glass looks in great condition, especially on the rear convertible hood.

We didn't notice any discolouration or cracks/chips in the glass while inspecting the images and videos. The rubber bumpers however are showing their age, and probably could do with renewal to match the finish of the paint and roof.

A practical and sporty interior offering everything you'd need for any roof-down road trip.

Seats and Carpets

These original black vinyl seats look in great condition, they definitely have stood the test of time.

Paul reports all the carpets are in good condition and the rear over-arch coverings have been retrofitted sometime prior to 2005 and are not the original.

Dashboard

Classic and sporty dials, this example's dials look in great condition, very clean all around.

Paul has informed us that all the dials and controls work as they should do. He has removed the old cassette radio which has left some screw holes.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Paul has fitted a smaller sports steering wheel to make manoeuvring this pocket rocket much easier.

The original MG gear stick is still fitted and looks good in this example.

Mechanics

The MG Midget saw various engine improvements throughout its life, the last 1500 version was the best equipped with the Triumph Spitfire 1493CC power-plant.

Engine and Gearbox

Packing a punch with it's sporty and larger 1493CC standard SC engine from the Triumph Spitfire, coupled with a modified Morris Marina gearbox with synchromesh on all four gears.

The increased displacement was able to cope with the increasing emission regulations. Offering 65bhp, with the twin SU HS4 carbs the engine produced much more torque with a top speed just over 100mph.

Paul reports a very smooth running engine with excellent gear changes. He fitted an electric ignition in 2011 and an immobiliser. Paul also reports a well working starter motor with choke.

Suspension and Brakes

Paul has had new servo's fitted in this Midget 1500, a much safer and reliable option of brakes.

Both kingpins were replaced 7 years ago, offering a much more stable ride. Paul assures us the car handles as you'd expect and stops just as it should do too - please view the images to see this in more detail.

The Drive

A fun, sporty, and accessible classic that was a hit in the '70s and is just as desirable now.

Electrics and Other

Lots of modern features have been fitted during Pauls ownership, some of the electrical features and others include:

Sports steering wheel, inertia seat belts, removal of retro-fitted radio cassette, servo-brakes, electric ignition, electric immobiliser, half and full tonneau is also included.
