Introduction

Dom Ginn
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

MG heritage, V8 power and muscular looks in a quintessentially British package.

Developed by Rover Group's Special Products Team, the MG RV8 was described by Rover's marketing department as "what the MGB would have become". The car was launched on the 30th anniversary of what has become Britain's most popular sports car.

This legacy, combined with the fact that only 1,982 RV8s were built, ensured its classic status from day one. However, the RV8 offers much more than just its heritage. The renowned 3.9L Rover V8 engine provides the car with a factory-specified top speed of 136 MPH and a 0-60 time of just under 7 seconds.

Based on the remanufactured shell of the MGB, 95% of the body panels were replaced to give the car its distinctive muscular appearance. The interior features a stunning combination of traditional wood and ivory leather.

This charming RV8 was re-imported from Japan in 2000, having originally been sold there in December 1994. It is finished in the striking "Woodcote Green" colour and has been with its current owner since 2009. The paperwork shows that the car has been well maintained and includes some desirable upgrades including the fitting of a Clive Wheatley roll bar.

Now after 14 years of ownership and with a full MOT, this classic car is up for auction - it not only looks great but is also ready to hit the road. The latest V5 says the car was acquired on 26.04.2023, this is due to changing the name on the V5 back to Christopher from another family member.

Please take a look at the high-resolution photos and videos to judge this British sports car for yourself.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Christopher, the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A wonderful and torquey V8 and corners like it’s on rails – I love it.

Christopher is no stranger to MG V8s having previously owned an MGB GT V8, he tells us, “I wasn’t looking for an RV8 but when it was time to part exchange my MGB GT I fell in love with this car. It’s a great cruiser, the V8 pulls beautifully and, with the addition of Spax shock all round, the handling is great”.

Christopher goes on to say, "I’ve always ensured it’s been well maintained, and, among other things, the suspension has been improved, it’s had neoprene bushes fitted and I have had the windscreen and surround replaced. All in all, it’s a great car to drive and I’ll really miss it – I really don’t use it as much as I should though so time for a new owner to enjoy it”.

Christopher is happy to answer any questions about his car in the comments section below

Exterior

Muscular stance and undeniable MG lines – all finished in stunning Woodcote Green.

Wheels and Tyres

The distinctive, 15”, spoked alloy wheels present well with only few signs of wear.

The MG centre caps are sound although they are showing some signs of age-related wear.

The wheels are fitted with Avon ZTS 205/65/R15 tyres all round and we could see no sign of cracks or perishing on the outside walls, and they appear to have good tread remaining.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, shut lines look good and we could see no signs of damage to the panels. Both doors, bonnet and boot open and close as they should, the hood appears to fit well.

The hood is generally in sound condition and you'll see an invoice dated 2011 for its replacement. We did notice a small tear on the nearside rear quarter that you'll see in the images, however, Christopher confirms is waterproof.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the highly popular Woodcote Green, the metallic paint presents well overall and retains a deep even shine. There is the inevitable age-related wear with some evidence of being touched up in a few places. There are some chips and dings most notably on the front and rear valances together with a small scuff on the nearside wing.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, side windows, mirrors and lenses all look in good condition with no cracks or chips that we could see.

The windscreen frame was replaced in November 2015 with a Clive Wheatley composite fibre frame and windscreen glass was replaced in 2017.

The body colour trim presents well with only some minor signs of age-related wear.

Interior

Traditional wooden dash and ivory leather trim give the MG RV8 a touch of opulence.

Seats and Carpets

Trimmed in ivory leather the seats seem structurally sound and appear free from major rips or tears, but are showing their age, particularly on the driver’s side.

The door cards present well and while the carpets appear in sound condition they would benefit from a deep clean.

Importantly the driver's seat has been lowered by ~1.5in enabling a more comfortable seating position for taller people.

Dashboard

The wooden dash looks in great condition having been removed, re-veneered and replaced in 2015 with the instrument lighting being replaced at the same time. The instrument gauges feature a chrome surround, Christopher tells us this is unusual as he's never seen it in another RV8.

The instruments look clear and unmarked with no glass broken.

The ivory leather dashtop looks in good condition with no rips or tears that we could see.

Please take the time to look at the hi resolution images and video of the interior so that you can assess the condition for yourself.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The MG branded steering wheel and centre boss appear in sound condition and the steering column lock assembly was renewed using a Brown and Gammon supplied unit in 2015.

The gear knob is showing some wear and there is a small tear in the leather gator and also on the centre console.

Mechanics

Legendary Rover V8 delivers 190BHP to a live rear axle giving a specified top end of 136MPH.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine bay appears clean with no sign of leaks or damage that we could see.

On the cold start the engine fired up willingly and quickly settled down to the characteristic V8 burble.

Oil pressure looked good, and emissions appeared clear.

Check out the “On the Road” video to see for yourself the car being started and driven around the local area.

Suspension and Brakes

Braking is delivered through discs up front and drums on the rear. Suspension has been upgraded with adjustable Spax shocks, neoprene bump stops and ARB bushes which Christopher confirms has considerably improved the car's handling.

The Drive

On our drive with Christopher the car performed exactly as it should. The torquey V8 pulled well, the steering seemed light and precise while gear changes were slick and trouble-free.

As a passenger the car felt firm and planted, yet very comfortable and the brakes pulled the car up quickly and evenly.

Check out the On the Road video to share in our experience.

Electrics and Other

This is a traditional sports car and electrics are relatively uncomplicated.

Christopher confirms everything works exactly as it should.

The air conditioning pump and ancillaries on this car have been removed to return it to UK specification and spotlights have been fitted in place of the pre-existing air intakes.

The car is fitted with a period audio system.

History and Paperwork

A nice usable example coming fresh from long ownership with a low reserve set.

The RV8 is a highly useable car in the great tradition of British convertibles. The Rover V8 engine means there’s plenty of torque, great for touring and pretty impressive acceleration.

This car has been well maintained and treated to fair few improvements making it great for everyday use. Christopher confirms that in his ownership the car has been serviced by RV8 specialist Clive Wheatley and has benefitted from new injectors, a replacement exhaust, suspension improvements, a recent alternator and engine oil and filter changes every 3000 miles.

Christopher told us at around 60,000 miles the heads were taken off by Clive Wheatley to deal with a spark plug thread which was destroyed, whilst the head was off they were cleaned and de-coked along with the tops of the pistons.

Christopher also tells us a new speedometer was fitted in 2004 showing 210 miles.

The car comes with various receipts for works indicating thoughtful and diligent ownership and the cherished number plate K888 MGR will remain with the car.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Christopher, could you please comment on what paint work has been carried out during your ownership? There is a listing up for this car on another site that describes a respray in August 2023 but no mention of that here that I could find. Thanks

Christopher, I think your RV8 was advertised here previously. Did it not sell or the reserve not get met or any other circumstances leading to it being advertised again please? Also, can you confirm that it has not been damaged in the past.

Thank you.

Paul
