Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

It’s the MGB V8 that enthusiasts always dreamed of, but the RV8 is much more than a bigger engine and sporty good looks.

The RV8 was a hugely important step in the 90's rebirth of MG after more than a decade of saloon and hatchback-only production. Since the closure of MG Abingdon's factory in 1980, MG had been reserved for the Metro, Maestro and Montego - and although these cars were worthy, what enthusiasts really wanted was a new MG roadster. The RV8 came about thanks to Rover’s Heritage division, which had started to remanufacture MGB bodyshells. MG needed to get a roadster to market and reworking its classic model gave it a straight forward solution. In creating the RV8, Rover very cleverly used a combination of off-the-shelf parts, such as the Range Rover's V8 engine and British Motor Heritage MGB bodyshell. The Japanese market showed a great interest in the RV8 with a desire for more retro style classic cars. ~1,583 of the ~1,982 built headed to Japan, ~92 examples went to Europe and ~307 stayed home in the UK making the RV8 a really rare model.

During its current ownership, the MG has had its clutch replaced, exhaust manifold gaskets replaced, Right hand and left hand side engine mounts replaced as well as both sides of the engine mounts, new water hoses, new exhaust bobbins and new exhaust mounts totalling over £3,000 for the works in 2018. As well as having these important works carried out, this example has had low usage over the past few years with a modest total mileage of ~43,700.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Derek the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Beautifully built and very comfortable, it's a car that is so elegant yet so aggressive in its performance, a perfect mix of motoring.

This car comes to market from ~11 year ownership with Derek he tells us "For me, MG have produced a really amazing car, its styling perfectly expresses the MG vision with its low sporting stance and bodywork lines". Given its 3.9L engine the car really packs a punch in its smaller stature he goes on to say "The roadster styling combined with the powerful V8 engine always gives me a great sense of exhilaration when I'm on the road in it. These cars are a piece of art".

He's kept the car in beautiful condition as pictured, and actioned work when needed. As Derek is a little older than when he first purchased the car, access in and out of the MG is proving tricker than it used to be, "I wanted a larger four door car that sits higher off the ground. My new car enables me to take family and friends out in and enjoy the experience of classic car shows" With this in mind, Derek has decided to put the MG up for sale to a future owner. Should there be any questions required, Derek would be happy to answer these in the section below.

Exterior

Beautifully elegant styling and classic British engineering, the RV8 is a timeless sporty roadster with enough pace to deliver some very impressive performance.

Wheels and Tyres

The RV8 is fitted with a well suited set of multi-spoke 15" MG wheels. These are in great condition with very few marks on the edges. The centre caps show with a classic red on white MG logo which look smart, but do show with a few signs of age related wear to them.

Complete with a set of Michelin Energy Saver tyres with a spec of 205/65, the tyres are showing date codes from 2010. The front and rear tyres are matched with the same tread spec. The condition of tyres looks good overall with no obvious cracking or major signs of wear. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the MG and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

Looking over the car, the bodywork looks great with the panel lines looking straight and no major dings or marks noted on the exterior. Both doors and bonnet and boot open and close well without concern.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

With its "British Racing Green" paint, the MG is absolutely timeless and looks great in its stand out colour. The finish is even in colour and coat on each panel of the car from our observations. We did note a few signs of swirl marks to the finish would may benefit from some close detailing to bring the car up to a really great level of presentation from the future owner. There were a few minor signs of stone chipping to the side edges and a few marks where the door has marked its edge lip section. The car itself presents really nicely but there are a few minor marks and a minor scuff to the paint, but nothing that stood out as a major concern.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen section, side windows and mirrors all appear in good condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass. The chrome areas around the car were looking good too when we reviewed the exterior sections. The seals on the whole look good around the car and in line with the rest of the condition of the body.

The colour coded bumpers, door handles and window surrounds all look in good condition too. Looking over the badge sections, the Octagonal MG and GB badges to the rear show well and present a smart look to the rear of the car. Equally the front mounted MG badge also looks smart, although we did note the lacquer had started to lift a little on its display.

Interior

With its high quality, plush interior finish and premium choice of materials, the cabin space on the MG is a very comfortable place to be.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished in Connelly leathers and are really comfortable, showing well inside the cabin area with their cream colour contrasting nicely against the exterior. The drivers seat had a minor mark on the base of the backrest section and the material shows a few additional creases. Carpet sections in both the front and boot areas show well, ageing nicely although could do with a good clean to bring them up to a better standard. Overall though, a really enjoyable place to sit as a driver or passenger and take in the road ahead in this comfortable roadster.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

Finished with high quality craftsmanship, the Burr Elm veneer is a lovely sight on the dash area, a real highlight of the interior space. There were some age related marks to the wood fascia with a few marks noted on the glovebox frontage in particular. The veneer is showing a few signs of age with some minor splits showing in the polished finish, although we had to look pretty closely to spot these.

Clocks and dials showed very nicely with ~43,698 miles at the time of our visit. The display on these sections showed a lovely level of presentation and are all functional. We noted no issues with any warning lights and the amp voltage, clock, water temp gauge, rev counter, fuel gauge and speedometer were all functioning without concern. Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the MG dashboard, head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

In line with the rest of the interior, the steering wheel and gear stick are in good condition, showing very little signs of wear. The leather bound MG branded wheel was a nice touch to the drivers setup and the MG emblem on the steering wheel centre was a lovely highlight to the cockpit area.

Looking over the gearstick, the surround looked in great shape and was fitted nicely and showed without wear or tear concerns. In summary, a great place to control the car from. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

Despite being on the road for ~28 years, the MG carries a clean MOT with no advisories and has covered less than ~3,000 miles in the last 5 years, a very well looked after UK RHD example of the model.

Engine and Gearbox

We take the car on a short drive out on some local roads to get a better sense of what the RV8 is all about. Derek worked through the gears without issue and we observed no problems with the transmission when we were out on the open road. The 3.9L V8 sounded great when we were out in the car with the 5 speed Rover gearbox delivering power well to the rear wheels on the road.

We noted no signs of excessive smoke or noise when the car was started up and running. We take a closer look around the engine bay section and highlight more about the mechanics in the cold start section of the mechanical review video.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out, Derek took us around some local roads, we heard no knocks, bangs or squeaks from the suspension and overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues. The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop nicely.

We cover off the underside of the MG in our "Mechanical gallery" section. Head over to our video section where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself, we take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer with this car.

The Drive

The MG RV8 is in lovely condition and a really smooth drive. Derek talks us through a little more detail about the driving style and performance of the car in our mechanical review video.

Overall, the RV8 is a very comfortable car to drive, but also has the ability to perform really well with its 3.9L V8 engine delivering ~187BHP, a top speed of ~136MPH and a 0-60 time of ~6.9 seconds from factory.

Electrics and Other

The MG is complete with an aftermarket Kenwood stereo system, the original Pioneer stereo is also included with the sale should this be required. The rest of the electrical sections in the car are relatively simple, designed to focus the driver on the road ahead.

Derek let us know that he has no issues with the electrical elements on the car and to the best of his knowledge, everything was working as it should.

History and Paperwork

A considerably rare car with only ~140 built for sale in the UK, coming to market from ~11 year ownership and just modest miles covered, this British Racing Green RV8 is the one to have.

The MG RV8 has a great amount of servicing detail that accompanies it, we feature the log book in our paperwork gallery which holds a great amount of receipts and MOT certificates over its history. A lovely advantage to the MG is the very limited mileage over the past few years as well as no MOT advisories over the past few years.

In February 2018, Derek, the current owner, had an issue with a leak to the rear crank shaft seal. Whilst the garage was taking out the engine, Derek had the clutch replaced, exhaust manifold gaskets replaced, right hand and left hand side engine mounts replaced as well as both sides of the exhaust mounts, new water hoses, exhaust bobbins and new exhaust mounting brackets all carried out by Omicron Engineering of Norfolk to a cost of over £3,000.

The MG has had additional work carried out including a bespoke RV8 perspex wind stop costing over £200 in 2013, a new battery in 2002 and new exhaust catalyst and assembly in 2001 costing over £1,000.

It's also great to see a large amount of service stamps in the MG service record book as featured in the paperwork gallery. Also included with the sale is the racing green leather bound MG logbook, which holds the owners handbook and information portfolio.

Should there be any questions required, Derek would be happy to answer these in the section below.
