Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

One of the most recognised cars ever produced, who would have thought in 1959 it would become one of the best selling cars in Europe.

The Mini Mark 1 was the first version of the BMC Mini, characterised by its sliding windows, external door hinges, and "moustache" grille. The MK1 was produced between 1959 and 1967. It had front-wheel drive, a space-saving solution that influenced all manufacturers, and today is the most popular drive-train layout. Sir Alec Issigonis created the revolutionary design of the Mini, and he was considered a visionary in industrial transportation. The simplicity and diminutive stature made it a hit during the Suez oil crisis.

Still an iconic car to this day, this car is coming to market from 5 years ownership, over which time it has been restored as it stands today. Sitting in its original specification, the restoration work has focused on renovation and only replacing items where completely necessary. With just 6 former keepers registered, and a full engine rebuild as part of the restoration, this Mark 1 Mini is ready for another 60 years of service.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Geoff the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having previously owned several Mini’s, this barn find came at just the right time for me as I enjoy the process of bringing gems like this back to life.

Geoff is the owner of this superb 1960 Mini Minor, which he has owned since 2017. He purchased the car as a barn find covered in dust as pictured, that had been squirrelled away . He has always had a soft spot for Mini’s amongst many other classics, having owned a few in the past. Being pretty handy with the spanners and not afraid of a challenge, he was looking for a restoration project to take on. Knowing Mini’s quite well and aware that parts are readily available, and that the cars are relatively straightforward to work on, made this the perfect car.

Having restored the Mini to its original specification and colour, with the help of local bodyshop specialists, the car has been enjoyed for a few miles, but the itch to start another project has started again and so this classic Mini has to go. Geoff will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have regarding his cherished Mini Minor in the comments below.

Exterior

These cars are iconic, and none more so than the early cars with the external door hinges and moustache grills.

Wheels and Tyres

The original 10” wheels have been retained and finished in cream with a chrome hubcaps, just as they came from the factory. They look in fine fettle as pictured, the cream paint adds so much period charm to these early cars.

The tyres are a matching set of Falken SN807's. These are in excellent condition having only covered a few hundred miles since being fitted in 2018.

Bodywork

The Mini has undergone a full restoration by Geoff’s local bodyshop who specialise in classics. Many new panels have been fitted, all of which can be seen in the masses of invoices shown in our paperwork section. Some of these include new rear wheel arches, front wings and inner door sections. The panel fit for the bonnet looks to sit a touch more forward than you would expect, but this may just need some adjustment. Looking from the side, the doors appear to have an even panel gap and sit level with the body.

We had the benefit of getting the car up on a ramp, and in the Mechanics gallery you'll see a super clean underside too. Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Paint

The car's colour has been finished in the original red inside, underside and outside. There is the odd mark here and there as it was completed in 2018, but nothing that would cause or raise concern. The paint's finish has plenty of depth and a lovely deep gloss to it.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show off this stunning 1960 Mini Minor MK1 at its absolute best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in very good condition, with just one mark on the right-hand rear window. The seals have been replaced along with the chrome trim insert. Autoglass fitted these in November 2018, when the project was in the closing stages.

The chrome bumpers are in excellent condition, as are the headlight surrounds and lamps. Running over the wheel arches and sills, the trim is in good condition with no dings or dents to it. The opening quarter windows are the original frames that do have the slightest amount of tarnishing, but nothing too excessive.

Please see our detailed gallery showing the full exterior.

Interior

Do you really need any mod cons? We don’t think so. Everything you need is there - it’s just a case of enjoying the period correct 1960 Mini.

Seats and Carpets

The Mini seats are the originals that Geoff has had part retrimmed. Unfortunately, his trimmer couldn't source enough material to do the front seats' bases, so these look a little different from the seat back and rear seat. With that said, the seats are in really good condition and show no signs of any excessive wear.

The carpets have been replaced for a completely new set and are therefore in excellent condition throughout. The boot area holds the battery, spare wheel and fuel tank; the paintwork finish inside the boot is a good standard matching the exterior.

Please see the interior gallery section for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dash fascia is trimmed in some vinyl to hide the wiring, with the centre mounted instrument binnacle working as it should. The instruments have been refurbished, and the odometer reset. Since then, the Mini has covered just ~491 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is the original and wrapped in a leather effect material. The steering wheel does have some age-related patina to the rim, spokes and Morris logo. The gear knob also looks to be the original and in good condition.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The original BMC A series 849cc engine has been fully rebuilt, and is raring to go.

Engine and Gearbox

Powering the Mini is the tried and tested BMC A-Series engine, which has been used for many years in various Mini’s. This particular one is the 849cc which has had a full rebuild during the restoration in 2017/2018. Flick the key, and the Mini fires into life as it should, and no untoward noises are coming from the engine bay. The only thing we did spot was a small oil leak around the rocker cover, but a new gasket should rectify this.

The 4-speed gearbox changes gear nice and smoothly. Geoff does mention that the clutch pedal does have a little bit of play and may need some slight adjustment. There is a sign of some oil around the output of the right-hand driveshaft, which we probably wouldn’t have seen without the car being up on a full ramp. The Mini goes in and out of gear nicely and doesn’t jump out of gear on the move.

Suspension and Brakes

There’s no denying that the Mini has been given whatever it’s needed. This is also evident by looking at the vehicle's underside, which can also be seen in our mechanical review video. In addition, the subframes have been given a complete restoration ensuring the Mini sits and rides just as it should.

Not left untouched, the brakes have been given a full overhaul, with new backing plates and shoes. These are now working as they should, bringing the Mini to a halt in a straight line.

The Drive

An 849cc mini might not be the fastest thing out of the box, but do you really need it? Nope, just enjoy it for the classic it is, and embrace the head-turning and people asking you questions about it, because they will.

It’s fun to be in and great to drive, with the added bonus of being economical. No knocks or bangs are coming from the suspension. Please take a look at our "On the Road" video for this 1960 MK1 Mini.

Electrics and Other

The equipment in the Mini was relatively minimal, and Geoff has kept this as intended. What switchgear is there is working as it should.

History and Paperwork

Beautifully restored to its original specification, including an engine rebuild, this Mark 1 Mini has had just 6 former keepers and comes with a nice amount of paperwork to validate the extent of the restoration.

A substantial number of invoices are included in the history file showing the relevant parts which have been replaced during the restoration. These come together with a collection of photographs taken of various parts of the car, subframe disassembly, the brakes stripped-down, engine rebuild, and how Geoff found it in the barn with years worth of dust covering it. An authentic barn find, now restored for 60 more years of motoring.

Geoff has spent a lot of time working with the bodyshop to ensure the Mini is as close as possible to the original 1960 condition, which we think they have pulled off exceptionally well.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.
