Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

A British icon, the Morris Mini Cooper epitomises classic motoring through and through.

The Classic Mini – arguably the most iconic British car known worldwide. The Cooper models were created through the partnership of Mini's automotive designer Alec Issigonis and race car builder John Cooper. First launched in 1959, the Mini has cemented itself as one of the best-selling British cars of all time, with over 5 million examples sold worldwide by 2000. In addition to this remarkable achievement, it was named "European Car of the Century" by the prestigious Global Automotive Elections Foundation.

This beautiful example is coming to the market fully restored, complete with its heritage certificate. Presented in an attractive "Tartan Red" over black colourway, it's a delightful specification that adds extra appeal to this Mk2. The restoration was carried out in the early 2010s, you'll see lots of invoices for parts and panels, and some picture documentation too.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Darren the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I stumbled upon this beautiful Mini by chance and couldn't resist having the opportunity of owning it.

Darren has thoroughly enjoyed owning this Morris Mini Cooper Mark II for the past ~5 months, keeping it stored in his dry garage for sunny weekends only. He acquired it from a dedicated enthusiast who fully restored the car himself, investing over 600 hours of labour. This meticulous restoration is documented in over 200 photographic prints, all of which will be included with the car.

He had hoped to keep this example for many years to come. However, due to moving to a new house without a garage, he is now bringing it to market with us. Darren will be available to answer any questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Finished in an iconic Tartan Red, this particular example has been fully restored to look great from every angle.

Wheels and Tyres

The 10" steel wheels painted cream, are finished with chrome hub cabs and look great on this car. During our visit, the wheels appear well cared for, with no sign of any obvious damage to any of the wheels or hub cabs.

The wheels are fitted with Falken FK-07E tyres, and these also appear to be in great condition, dated 2023, with a great amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking or signs of age on the sidewalls.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this MkII Mini Cooper appears to be in excellent condition, with all the panel gaps around the car aligning very well, as one would expect from a restored example. During our visit, we did not spot any obvious dings or dents on the bodywork. You'll see invoices for panels that were replaced during the restoration, and we didn't spot any obvious signs of corrosion as you'd expect.

We have provided more detailed observations through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all the media files for a thorough view of what’s on offer and to assess the car's condition for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "Tartan Red", the paint displays even coverage and colour across each panel, again, as you would expect from a restored and cherished example.

Once again, we have captured high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the paint condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Mini Cooper MKII looks great. During our visit, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration. The window seals also look good and align with the overall condition of the car.

The bumpers, door handles, and window surrounds are all in great condition as well.

Interior

The restored interior with the original back seat retains the feel and charm of a classic Mini.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats have been restored, while the rear bench remains original. Both sets of seats have retained their shape very well, indicative of cherished and careful ownership.

A similar story can be seen with the door cards and black carpets. For a detailed view of the cabin, please take a look at the extensive media.

Dashboard

The dashboard is covered in a black vinyl finish and presents three dials in front of the driver.

The dashboard in this Morris Mini Cooper Mark II shows no signs of any major damage or scuffs, and with no warning lights displayed. The odometer showed a reading of ~19,999 miles during our visit - Darren reports this has been stuck since 2017 and would require some attention.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original black Morris steering wheel is fitted, it is in great condition, aligning with the condition of this car, and the gearstick looks good too. For a closer look, check out the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

With a full engine rebuild, the car also features new 7" disc brakes and a recent carburettor rebuild.

Engine and Gearbox

The Mini is fitted with the classic 998cc engine which was rebuilt along with the gearbox in the restoration. The carburettor has recently been overhauled and tuned. On the day of our visit, we started the car from cold, and it performed well on the road, the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault. The car had a correct replacement engine fitted in the 1980s, bought from Austin Rover at that time.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the Mini and the very smart engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears to be in good condition, providing a smooth journey on the sweeping Somerset roads.

During our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a car from this era, coming to a stop without a fuss too.

The Drive

Strap in! An extremely enjoyable drive is offered with this little machine. Darren has loved using the car for trips around his hometown on sunny weekends.

The Mini Cooper MK II fired up the first time with no issues to report. On the road with Darren the car felt tight, exhibiting plenty of power to navigate the road. We didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but Darren reports that, to his knowledge, all of the electrics are functional and operational, aligning with the overall condition of the car. The car has its retro stereo unit fitted along with Pioneer rear speakers.

History and Paperwork

A fully restored example, finished in factory specification, it's a beautifully presented example of the Mk2 Mini.

The car is coming out of ~5 month ownership with Darren, restored by the former keeper it has a rebuilt engine and gearbox, lots of receipts for parts and panels and they are said to have put in around 600 hours which we think shows. There are photos of the restoration process included in the sale, the Haynes workshop manual also comes with the car. This car as is often the case with Minis of this era, had a correct replacement engine that was bought from Austin Rover in the 1980s. Take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT reports, servicing and parts this Mini Cooper Mark II has received over its life.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
