Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Initially conceived as a lightweight military vehicle, the Mini Moke has gone on to become a bit of a cult classic.

The Moke was marketed as a lightweight recreational utility vehicle where it became popular globally with the very first models produced right here in Britain at the Birmingham based BMC factory, with just shy of 15,000 being manufactured between 1964 and 1968. Spurred on by the Moke’s success manufacturing began in Australia, where a further 26,000 were produced between 1966 and 1981, finally culminating in the final production run of 10,000 in Portugal until 1993, where the Moke finally ended its 30 year production run.

This example of the loveable Mini Moke was first imported to Barbados and then later to the UK, having done only ~24,000KMs (~15,000 miles) this particular Moke has seen very little use and this is reflected in the condition of the vehicle. Coming to market from ~6.5 years ownership, the vehicle has been well cared for with recent works including new shock absorbers and ball joints, and is getting a fresh MOT actioned this week.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Jamie the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Coming from a family of Mini Mokes, I knew this would be a well cared for example.

Jamie originally purchased this car in 2016 after falling in love with not only the design of the car, but also the exotic provenance originally imported to Barbados courtesy of The Bajan Motor Co. for a family who already owned four Mokes in a wide range of colours, this blue example joining the red and white Mokes to make up the colours of the Union Jack!

Since purchase Jamie has travelled only 2,700KMs (~1600 miles) and has continued the care for this vehicle. Over and above servicing, he has had brand new shock absorbers fitted. The car comes with all the colour coded weather panels, and also a custom made weatherproof cover. With a relocation on the cards to a property without a garage, Jamie has decided to let his Moke move into the hands of a new owner who will be able to love and cherish the vehicle as he has.

Exterior

The unique design of the Moke instantly stands out in the crowd and look great with the bright blue paintwork.

Wheels and Tyres

The 12" wheels appear to be in good condition, the white trims do have a number of marks on some of the wheels as pictured, and the spare wheel has some surface corrosion present.

The Pirelli tyres appear to be in good condition too with no obvious signs of deterioration to the sidewalls or tread pattern. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The unique shell of the Moke is simple and lacks any complexity in its design, making it easy to see that the panels and bodywork on the whole appear to be in good condition. We could see no visible corrosion on the bodywork on the day and what few panel gaps there are, given its lack of doors, appear to be spot on.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The bright blue paintwork is a really eye catching colour and any imperfections would soon make themselves known. We didn’t see any large scratches or scrapes during our time spent with the car, nor did we see any mismatched panels in terms of paint colour or shade. There are a couple of chips to the paint on some leading edges as pictured.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The only glass on the vehicle is the windscreen and this is free from any chips or cracks, and the surrounding trim is all in good condition too. The vinyl roof is also in good condition with no rips or tears and looks to have been well looked after by current owner Jamie.

Interior

With no doors and no luxuries, the interior of the Moke makes for a fun, unique, and engaging driving experience.

Seats and Carpets

The four seater design of the Moke has black vinyl seats with red piping, matching the removable roof covering. Although they offer little in the way of luxury, the vinyl seats are modestly comfortable for what they are and look to be in good condition overall, in line with the cars low mileage.

With no carpets to speak of, there are some rubber floor mats present to suit the open cabin design this ensure easy cleaning and waterproof flooring. The mats themselves appear to be in good overall condition as with the vinyl seats.

Dashboard

With only one gauge and four switches, the Moke’s dashboard is a very simple design, with the bare shell of the interior matching the exterior blue paint.

This simple design leaves little to be damaged and we could not see any signs of damage to the dashboard itself, nor the single dial and four buttons in the centre of the dash, just some paint flaking at the top.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is a simple affair, as is the style of the Moke, but it appears undamaged and in good condition. Likewise the gear stick is in good condition too and doesn’t suffer from any unsightly damage.

Mechanics

Powered by a 1.0L engine, the Mini Moke is modestly able to get from A to B, the exposed to the elements design being part of the charm.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.0L engine is a small but capable unit, providing enough power to get the Moke around and delivering modest fuel economy too.

The engine starts just fine as can be seen in the ‘cold start’ section of our ‘On The Road’ video, and drives without issue which can also be seen later in our ‘On The Road’ video. When Jamie purchased the car, a full service was actioned as detailed in the paperwork, and he's covered a modest ~2,700KMs in his ownership.

Suspension and Brakes

Having just had new shock absorbers fitted for its most recent MOT, the suspension of the Moke seems to be all in good order and both the ride and handling appear to be in line with what you’d expect from a car such as this. Likewise the brakes work well, as demonstrated by owner Jamie in our ‘On The Road’ video.

The Drive

Not designed for speed or long distance journeys the Moke fits into quite a niche category in terms of driving experience, it's what has made it a bit of a cult classic.

It’s hard not to fall in love with the open cabin design of the Moke when you’re pootling around on a hot summers day with the breeze in your hair and the world laid out around you with no interference from doors, windows, or any other modern conveniences.

Electrics and Other

The electrical systems of the Moke are few, limited to basic things such as lights, indicators, and basic engine related electrics however these all seem to work as expected with no faults to report.

History and Paperwork

First imported to Barbados to join a collection of Mokes, this low mileage car has been in current ownership for ~6.5 years, and looks a good buy for a collector or enthusiast alike.

From Banana farming in Barbados to a beloved conversation piece in Britain, this Mini Moke has seen it all. With low mileage and even the original bill of lading for its journey across the seas, this particular example is in very good standing and is extremely well presented. It comes with provenance showing the original owners importing the car to Guernsey, and comes to market from ~6.5 years ownership. Jamie is currently getting a fresh MOT actioned for the car this week.

Most of the car's documents since it's been in the UK are shown with the Reg No. FIA651. The present Reg No. is as per the pictures and V5 - F227 GWT.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
