Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

One of the most refined of Mini's limited-editions, Paul Smith put his unique design touches on this already iconic British classic.

Over five million Minis were produced between the car's launch in 1959 to 2000, however, standing out from the crowd was never an issue with the choice between so many different models and editions produced across the years.

The Paul Smith limited edition run of 1800 examples (with 300 designated for the home market), was one of the most distinctive limited-edition Minis ever produced. The car shared the basic spec of the revered Mini Cooper, powered by a 64BHP 1275cc fuel-injected engine, Minilite-type alloys, full leather seats, color-coded wheel arch extensions and mirrors finished in a distinctive purple/blue hue chosen by Paul Smith himself.

This was one of the few Minis to be fitted with the tall 2.76:1 final drive ratio, making it one of the most relaxing and refined Minis to drive. This particular example has got to be one of the most original and best kept available. Sarah inherited this limited-edition Mini from her great Aunt. It's always been garaged and with only ~6,900 miles on the clock, excellent condition from bags of originality, we know this will be one hot collector's item.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Sarah the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Family-owned since new, this car offers an authentic Mini experience that always brings a massive smile to my face.

Sarah inherited the car from her great Aunt in 2020, who purchased the car brand new from the Clarks dealership in 1999. It's spent its life being garaged, which is clearly represented in the condition you see it in today, along with the low ~6,900 miles travelled. Sarah's great Aunt was a lover of Minis and when inherited, she was keen to use it and had the car MOT'd, serviced, put new tyres on the car, and briefly used it last summer.

With a new member of the family having arrived recently, and not much room for a child seat and pram, Sarah has decided this car needs to go to a collector and swap it out for a more practical car for the family. Sarah be more than happy to answer any of your questions about the car in the comments below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

Easily identifiable as a Paul Smith to collectors, this example is original as they come thanks to the family ownership from new and low mileage.

Wheels and Tyres

Several features made the Paul Smith Mini so special, and one of these was the Charcoal minilite 12” alloy wheels, previously used on the Cooper 35 and Monte Carlo edition. These wheels present in great condition on each corner, with the very lightest of curb marking present only on the front nearside alloy.

As the car hadn't been used for some years when Sarah inherited the example, she thought it would be best to fit some fresh tyres, Yokohama A539 tyres were chosen, these are dated 2019/20 and appear in excellent condition with lots of tread.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Paul Smith Mini looks in excellent condition, with all the panel gaps around the car look to align very well. This limited edition Mini saw the addition of body colour wheel arches, mirrors and front fog lights.

During our visit we didn't spot any obvious dinks down the flanks of the car, everything looking crisp and sharp. Being very picky, we did notice the smallest signs of wear to the front bumper and along the edge of the driver's door - you'll have to get very close to notice these. Both the doors, boot, and bonnet open and close with ease.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in an exclusive Blue/Purple hue, chosen by Sir Paul Smith. As part of the limited edition, he chose hidden "Citrus Green" body parts, a trademark contrast touch, which you'll notice as you open the boot and bonnet.

The paint appeared in great condition on our visit, finished to a very high standard, with even coverage and colour across each panel. Given the mileage and ownership history, Sarah is certain all the paint is original on this car. Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this limited-edition Paul Smith Mini looks good, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. Benefiting from being garaged all its life, they haven't perished as you see on higher mileage examples.

The car is fitted with a 24-carat gold plated Paul Smith bonnet badge. All the chrome work appears in great condition, except for a very small dent to the rear bumper, and being very very picky, the front number plate shows a little crack.

Interior

Mini's quirky interior with bespoke Paul Smith signature design, full leather seats throughout this cabin make the limited edition feel that much more special.

Seats and Carpets

Paul Smith customisation continues within the cabin, this Mini was fitted with black leather seats with matching door cards and pockets. This style was only available on the Paul Smith Mini.

As you would expect for ~6,900 miles example, the interior matches the exterior and appears in excellent condition. You can tell this car has been meticulously cared for over its lifetime. The door cards and carpets present in great condition with no issues noticed.

Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

This edition was fitted with a body-coloured dashboard, which was only ever seen again in the Classic Cooper 'end of line' edition. The dashboard in this Mini has no signs of any major damage or scuffs. With no warning lights displayed, the odometer showed a reading of 6,964 miles on our visit.

Magnolia clocks and dials with custom-styled numbers appear on the gauges, you'll also find the Paul Smith signature logo on one of the dials along with its plaque inside the glove box.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear selector are presented in great condition, with very little signs of use. Again, in line with the mileage of this collector quality car. We noticed the slightest signs of wear to the accelerator pedal, the only wear in the cabin of note.

Mechanics

With the tall 2.76:1 final drive ratio, the 1275cc fuel-injected engine provided one of the most relaxing and refined drives achievable in a Mini.

Engine and Gearbox

Several parts under the skin of this Paul Smith edition were given a custom Citrus Green coloured contrast items. These included the rocker cover, HT leads, glovebox, petrol tank and boot board. The car shared the basic spec of the Mini Cooper, powered by a 64BHP 1275cc fuel-injected engine.

Sarah reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth manual gearbox powering the front wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath.

Suspension and Brakes

One of the most defining aspects of the Mini is its rubber-cone suspension system, which requires very little maintenance. With just ~6,900 miles travelled, the suspension on this example is still in good stead.

Please view the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

An extremely fun and enjoyable drive is offered with the Mini. Sarah loves getting the car out for short road trips around her hometown, in its unique colour hue, it's certainly a fashion statement and one that will stand out from the crowd at any Mini meet. With the mileage being so low though, we do wonder if the new owner will be driving this example.

Electrics and Other

All of the electric items are said to be fully functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

1 of 1800 produced, this Paul Smith Mini with ~6,900 miles on the clock is a UK RHD, family owned from new, collector quality condition car. This has got to be one of the best examples to come to sale.

This car is coming out of ~1.5 years of ownership with Sarah, however, the car has been in the family since new. Sarah's great Aunt purchased the car from Clarks Motors in 1999. The car has bags of originality from all the important Paul Smith bits, to the Clarks decals on the windows and even a Clarks umbrella!

Take a look at the media to see all the history included within the sale of the car, the last service was carried out last September - the spark plugs were changed too. Sarah will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

Do you have the numerical code for the stereo? It seems this is required before the stereo can be operated.

Hi the vehicle looks lovely on outside but the underneath of the vehicle subframe and other structural bits look to be really Rusty ?? Is this why there is no MOT as it will probably Fail a current MOT ??

Hi,
Has the underside of this vehicle been inspected by a garage? It looks like it needs some work?

Is there a reason why the vehicle isn’t being sold with a current MOT?
