Introduction

Professional Consigner

If you are going to own one of Britain’s most iconic cars, why not go the extra step and put two icons together - Paul Smith and the Mini.

It was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis and manufactured by the English-based company British Motor Corporation (BMC). With its space-saving transverse engine and front-wheel drive, the layout allowed 80% of the car’s floor pan to be used for passengers and luggage. The 26th August 1959 saw the Mini officially unveiled to the public. Several thousand vehicles had already been produced, with 2000 already sent abroad. They were displayed that very same day in over 100 countries to coincide with the launch. The Mini has had many editions, collections and marks over its 41 years, ranging from the Cooper S, John Player Special, Mayfair and the one we have here today, the limited Paul smith edition. Just 1,800 of these iconic cars were produced and specially styled by the renowned fashion designer Paul Smith.

This rare example was one of the 1,500 sent to the Japanese market, where it resided until 2020 when it was imported to the UK. Coming from Japan has its advantages; there is no salt on the roads meaning corrosion is less of an issue, and the cars come better equipped with air conditioning. Coming to market from ~3 year ownership, this automatic variant makes for a great value proposition entry in to this limited edition version of the Mini.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Stephen the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Paul Smith Mini is a fantastic option - if you are looking for a desirable limited edition model, this is the one to go for.

Stephen has owned the Paul Smith Mini since 2020, when it came to the UK from Japan. The low mileage example is in nice condition, corrosion was not an issue in Japan, and limited miles in the UK. Having air conditioning and being an automatic means it can quite comfortably be used as a city car daily in the UK.

Please feel free to ask Stephen any questions about the car in the comments below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

The iconic fashion designer chose the stunning blue/purple colour known now as Paul Smith Blue Hue.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 12” Minilite alloy wheels as standard, these are finished in charcoal grey. There are a few minor age-related marks to them, but nothing excessive.

The tyres are matching Yokohama’s, these have a good amount of tread, but there are signs of age to them. Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Walking around the Mini, the panels align as you would expect, with an equal gap, and everything opens and closes correctly. A few small blisters have started to show just below the headlights on the seam for the front panel, but this has not broken through the paintwork. The underside of the car looks great too, including the sills, the car having been undersealed when it arrived in the UK has helped it stay this way.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The vivid colour of the Paul Smith Hue is, without doubt, a stunning colour. There are a few age-related marks, and unfortunately, the main thing we noticed was that the lacquer on the roof has crazed, and just some general ageing/flatness to the paint in a few areas.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows look in good condition, with no noticeable scratches spotted. The seals also look in very good condition with minimal signs of age. At some point, the door mirrors have been removed and classic wing mounted items fitted. These are in good condition, but mounting holes are left of course left in the doors.

The headlights and indicators have no signs of any chips or cracks, and the rear lights are also free from damage. Chrome bumpers have a bright finish with no tarnishing, and sitting pride of place is the 24ct gold enamelled Paul Smith bonnet badge, and citrus green GB badge on the grill.

Interior

Being the Paul Smith Edition, black leather comes as standard - giving a luxurious feel to the interior.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in black leather, the seats in the Mini are in excellent order, with just a small amount of age-related creasing. However, there is a tiny split which could be repaired with a range of products designed for this. The rear seat and door cards are also in excellent condition, with no damage to report.

The carpets are clean and tidy, with no apparent signs of wear. Looking up, the headlining does have some stains, and it has started to sag a little. Inside the boot is clean and tidy. Also in place is the spare wheel and the green carpets unique to the Paul Smith Edition.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard fascia in the Mini is finished in the same colour to match the exterior; this presents well with no apparent scuffs. The instruments are again unique to this model. They are working correctly and have an odometer reading of ~15,278 KMs. The car still has the original speedo, the importers opting to fit an MPH HUD rather than replacing the original unit.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three-spoke Nardi steering wheel is in excellent condition with no real wear to the rim, a replacement item for this car. The automatic gearknob is made from aluminium and in good condition.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The iconic 1275cc engine just got even better with the addition of fuel injection and a tall final drive of 2.76:1.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1275cc engine fires up with the first flick of the key. No untoward noises are coming from the engine bay, and everything appears to be in good order with no signs of any leaks. Out on the road, the car pulls as well as you would expect through the rev range.

Fitted with an automatic gearbox, the change is smooth, with no clunks from the transmission. The brakes bring the car to a halt as they should, with no juddering through the pedal and in a straight line.

Suspension and Brakes

From every angle, the Mini looks to sit correctly, and no knocks or bangs were coming from the suspension whilst we were out on the test drive. The car comes to a stop in a straight line with no juddering reported to come through the pedal.

The Drive

Out in the Mini is a fantastic drive; being an automatic makes life that little bit easier in bigger towns and cities where there is more traffic. If you've never experienced a Mini, then it is an experience you have been missing out on.

Electrics and Other

The head unit has been upgraded with a Pioneer unit for your entertainment. The Mini has air conditioning that works correctly. The switchgear has suffered some UV damage but is functioning as it should. There is an additional heads-up display GPS speedometer fitted to the top of the dashboard which reads in MPH.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

A genuine Paul Smith edition Mini, it comes to market from ~3 year ownership, being a Japanese car imported in 2020, it benefits from a better climate most of its life and so looks a solid example with AC and automatic gearbox.

Unfortunately, like most cars which are imported from Japan, there is very little paperwork to show the history of the vehicle. This means we can only go on the condition, and in this case, the Mini looks in good order with no untoward issues jumping out. A service was performed in February 2021, and an MOT was carried out on 07.02.2023.

This is a great time to take over the ownership of a British icon; not only is it the iconic Mini, but also the rare Paul Smith Edition, which is one of just 1,800 produced worldwide.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
