Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The Cooper Sport is a grown-up version of an enduring classic, all the iconic looks and that little something extra.

This is the automobile that kicked off the small-car revolution, and there can't be many individuals of a certain age who don't recall a tale or event that doesn't include a Mini. First seen in 1959, it popularised the front-wheel-drive transverse engine layout and the Mini soon became the template for the small car. It also proved to be handy as a competition car too, and its stock was strengthened by the use of the Cooper name as it tackled the forest and tarmac stages with aplomb. The Mini production was right up to the year 2000, by which time the writing was finally on the wall and after 41 years of production.

However, the original Mini had one last trick up its sleeve. A revitalised version was launched in 1996 and served as a swansong for the icon. These later models saw a slew of improvements, with a driver's side airbag, seatbelt pre-tensioners, side door anti-intrusion beams, an immobiliser as well as a distributor-less electronic ignition system. The top of the Mini range was the Cooper Sport and sold with an interior trimmed in black and nickel leather with 'race-style' alloy fittings, leather-trimmed steering wheel and a metallic-finish fascia. It served as a fitting tribute to what is considered one of the most loved British cars of all time.

One of the last cars to leave the Longbridge plant is this well-furnished October 2000 Mini Cooper Sport. It has recently been subjected to a professional valet and comes with good service history, its original bill of sale and the novelty of being owned by the same family for all of its life. The car is beautifully presented both inside and out, and in mechanically fine shape with evidence of regular maintenance. Garaged for much of its life, this example has just over ~40,000 miles on the clock and is a truly unique opportunity to obtain what is considered the most usable and refined Mini's ever made.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Jonathan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

We've gone to great lengths to ensure it has been stored correctly, part of the reason for it's condition as you see today.

Jonathan's wife had long desired a Mini, and the last chance to buy one before the car's production ended was eventually seized in late 2000. The car was only used by her until 2003 when she replaced it with a new car.

Retained by the family, it lived a life of storage with periodic use. The car has always been taken to trusted specialists who have kept it in full work order, taking care of all the mechanical and visual aspects over the years. Despite forming an emotional attachment to the car, Jonathan has come to the conclusion that it's time for someone else to enjoy it. He'll be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section.

Exterior

Cherished and well cared for, the exterior presentation is first class on this late Mini Cooper.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with its original 12" "Luxury Alloy" Minilite style wheels. They are in very good condition, with just the lightest of marks.

The front tyres are a pair of Continentals which were fitted in 2010 and it appears that the car still retains their original rear Dunlop items from 2000, which show wear on the edge of the sidewalls but all have plenty of tread left on them. View the image gallery for the details.

Bodywork

The car is pleasingly solid throughout, with no immediate concerns in terms of typical corrosion for a classic Mini. The usual weak spots, such as the inner wings, sills, floor pan, boot floor and both subframes are solid. The lower sections of the exterior panels all look good, with no issues noted on the front lip, doors or rear valance.

The car has seen work to repair the A panels, sills and nearside lower windscreen corner in May/June 13 with a dent and roof repair carried out around the same time. There are virtually no dents or scuffs noted on the bodywork, just one pointed out by Jonathan on the rear nearside panel. One other point he had was a small spot just fingertip sized, of surface rust on the nearside rear window lower sill was treated, this doesn't show externally and has been cured but not painted over. View the video review to see all over the bodywork.

Paint

The British Racing Green paint finish is in excellent shape throughout, complemented by the silver roof finish. There are no signs of mismatched paint or poor coverage from our observations. The finish has a brilliant lustre with no observations of significant road chips or wear.

If we had to be picky, a minor under-paint blemish on the roof has been pointed out by the owner and a minor scuff on the nearside rear wing constitutes the total sum of issues. There is also evidence of minor paint 'spidering' on both sides of the lower door wells.

Glass and Trim

The chrome work and lighting elements have lasted well, with no outstanding issues noted. Both of the headlamp bezels have been replaced and the owner has retained the originals if needed.

The glass is in excellent shape, with no signs of damage noted. All of the glass seals and door rubbers are in good condition. The decals are clean and free of fading, with minor blemishes noted on the bonnet stripe. Jonathan has a replacement set of Mini Cooper stickers for the side panels and replacement bonnet stripes (original parts) which are of course included in the sale.

Interior

Lavishly furnished for a Mini, the interior has also been very well kept.

Seats and Carpets

The last edition Minis were furnished with just that little bit extra, and this one is no exception. The black and nickel-silver leather seats are part of the "Cooper Sport" package and in keeping with the excellent interior presentation, are in very good condition with nothing more than the expected light wear that comes with age.

The carpets are very clean with no marks and the optional tailor-made Cooper brand mats are in excellent shape. Watch the video review to see the whole cabin.

Dashboard

There's very little to complain about in terms of the condition of the dashboard. The binnacle proudly displays the full set of instruments within a turned-alloy fascia. The stitching on the leather padded surfaces is free from damage, with no issues with the condition of the switches and dials.

The car is fitted with its original tape/radio player and ICT speaker system. The owner mentioned that they do not have any tapes to test out its functionality!

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The car is fitted with a duo-tone leather steering wheel and gleaming alloy gear knob, both are in tip-top condition with no signs of wear.

Mechanics

With its regular servicing and maintenance, the car is mechanically in fine shape and well presented.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine presentation is generally positive, with evidence of regular maintenance by a trusted specialist. While some components show expected signs of age, the engine runs very well with no issues with its starting ability. It fires up immediately with no issues flagged up, with the engine running noticeably smoothly and quietly and no evidence of exhaust smoke at all when idling.

The gearbox engages gear cleanly, with the clutch well weighted with a decent biting point and no evidence of juddering. Please see the "Mechanical Review" video for Jonathan's demonstration of the way the car drives. It also has to be noted that the car is also free from leaks.

Suspension and Brakes

The Mini's firm suspension is free of any clonks. The steering has seen recent attention and is fully compliant and retains its superb feel.

The brakes feel reassuringly effective and slow the car down with no juddering or pulling to one side. No thuds were heard upon acceleration.

The Drive

These later cars are surprisingly refined and cosseted in town, thanks to the single-point fuel injection, comfy seats and additional soundproofing. The car's perky performance is truly endearing, and during the short drive around the town, the car manages to achieve what small modern cars simply lack; a nimble urge and plenty of street cred. Always fun to drive, the Mini serves as a reminder of how far cars have come but also how much they have lost in the process.

Electrics and Other

The owner ticked a few options at the dealership when they bought the car, which included interior alloy handles, winders and door lever as well as the additional front driving and fog lamps. The car is also fitted with a fully functional immobiliser and alarm. Jonathan mentions that he doesn't know if the warm air control pull action button is working (where the original Mini choke used to be placed on the dash) because he never uses it/has always forgotten to check it.

History and Paperwork

With just one owner since new, and ~40,000 miles recorded, it has been part of the family and has seen plenty of attention.

Bought new from Jonathan's local Rover dealer, Dutton Forshaw Aylesbury, the car has seen a regular routine of servicing and maintenance since new. It has also seen a handful of issues addressed in recent years including a new water pump, replacement wheel cylinder, exhaust and replacement steering rack gators.

With the exception of the initial Rover dealer servicing details and work carried out after 2012, the owner has unfortunately misplaced the service and maintenance invoices from 2004 to 2012. This period includes some welding work, which is detailed in the bodywork section. The car was initially registered with a personalised plate which has been retained by the owner and the car will be sold with its original issue registration number. The Mini has only travelled around 10,000 miles in the previous 16 years and had been safely stored in dry storage, but has always been taken for its yearly MOTs.

That’s fine regards viewing only, rather than publicise your address, do you want to call me or text on 07808 332921? I’m travelling from Essex enroute to the midlands but hoping to leave at 4pm.
