Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The 205 GTi is a firecracker and set a new standard of chassis dynamics for the modern car.

Want to know an open secret? The Peugeot 205 GTi is a sure-fire investment. The demand for these cars have become something of a common thread in modern classic circles but there is a genuine appetite for original and unmolested examples. It's not hype, but fact.

Introduced in 1984, the Peugeot 205 was released to critical acclaim. Lauded for its communicative chassis, agility and excellent stylish packaging, the GTi versions were released from the get-go and quite literally changed the face of the brand. Interestingly the car success comes down to some low numbers. The 1.6-litre, sub-900kg weight and relatively low bhp went against the grain of power, but the 205 GTi talent lay in the sum of those parts. Orientated toward its lightweight poise, zingy engine and sharp steering, the 205 GTi is in its element in the hands of the enthusiast.

Importantly for a sporting car, its image has never dipped and there’s always been a firm market for the GTi. This very original example has been with its current owner for 7 years and has seen a fair amount of work to maintain its talent for agility. It has seen suspension and steering attention and offers evidence of a very solid chassis on a rather dent-free body. This 1990 115bhp facelift model benefits from better build quality, the plusher interior with tweed-trimmed ‘Monaco’ seats and a revised gearbox layout. The car is presented as a good example of a well enjoyed but fundamentally solid car.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Stephen the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I went through a phase of buying as many different types of hot hatches as I could find!

Stephen, like many of us growing up in the '80s and '90s hankered over "Hot Hatches". As a result, he went through a period of buying several different cars as a way to scratch that itch.

Attracted to the positive feedback and agility of the 205 GTI, he kept this example for the longest but has decided to move it on as it's not really being used as it should be.

Exterior

The pert styling is complemented by the iconic alloy design and smart body trim.

Wheels and Tyres

The iconic pepper pot alloys on the GTi have become synonymous with the sporty nature of the model. The alloys are in good condition with no curb marks observed, a couple of the wheels showing signs of minor surface corrosion.

The car is fitted with Pirelli tyres and all four are in good condition with well above legal thread.

Bodywork

The bodywork condition is pleasing for a car not known for its metal thickness. There are no significant dents or external signs of corrosion or signs of body distortion. The panel gaps and door fitments look good, with even gaps throughout the shuts.

The floorplan, inner wings, areas around the headlamps and sills look solid. The only point worth mentioning is the corrosion underneath the driver door and a small area of rust that can be seen on the left-hand side of the boot floor.

Paint

Finished in Cherry/Le Mans Red (P3KB), it's a colour that suits this model, a little firecracker we think. This car has seen a respray in its history, clearly a good standard with the presentation of the car now.

The shine is balanced throughout with no swirls or scratches. The paint job means that there are no significant chips to the front or door edges evident, although there is some paint damage around the front towing eye, otherwise, the lower flanks of the car are generally chip-free.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition with no reported chips or significant scratches. All of the glass rubber is in good condition with no splits or perishing.

The plastic trim is complete and correct for the model, and have been well maintained. Both bumpers show signs of minor scuffs, most notably on the corners of each section. The lights are good, with a small crack evident of the rear near-side tail light. The sunroof is said not to leak.

Interior

The years have been remarkably kind to the interior and its originality is a bonus.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with the sports seats and "Monaco" check pattern, it has that sporty look you expect from a hot hatch. The interior is in good condition, with no obvious drawbacks to report. Both front seats have worn the years well, with no rips, tears or significant wear.

The interior has a minor signs of mould in a few places but will no doubt clean up, likely to be due to storage rather than water ingress. The carpets are slightly faded in places, but overall in good damp-free condition. The door cards are generally in good order with small signs of ageing. The right-hand side door card has a mark on it towards the rear. The headlining is in good condition.

Dashboard

The dashboard presentation is good, the plastic is largely free from scratches and day-to-day damage. There is a large crack on the centre console though. The dials and switches are said to be fully functional with no obvious sign of malfunction. The car has been fitted with an aftermarket car stereo but the rear parcel shelf has not been sacrificed to accommodate speakers.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear stick are in good condition, there is a little wear and tear evidence but they are with the realms of the decent condition of the interior.

Mechanics

Known for its reliability, the engine sounds strong and eager.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine is said to pull well and started up with no issues. The 1.6-litre engine runs very nicely and shows no evidence of knocking or clunking and the exhaust is free from blue smoke.

The gearbox and clutch are said to be fully operational with no issues reported. The exhaust is in good all-round condition, which is to be expected as it appears to be a relatively recent purchase.

Suspension and Brakes

The running gear is said to be in good order, with no problems with the brakes. They visually look to be in good condition with no obvious wear damage. The shock absorbers and front springs have been replaced in the last 10 years, so there shouldn't be any issues with the handling of this car.

The Drive

The 205's chassis has become well known for its agility, regardless of the engine size and this is why the car is such a joy to drive. The grip and the feedback through the steering and its mild understeer is just one reason why one might just take the car out for the sake of it. The recent suspension overhaul means that the ride has been retained without the loss of confidence which can affect performance versions of hatchbacks.

Electrics and Other

All of the electrics on the car are said to be functional, with lights, wipers and interior electrics in good order.

History and Paperwork

The car has seen relatively little use in recent years but is mechanically up to scratch and looks great in its Cherry Red paint.

The car comes with paperwork from the last 10 years or so, including invoices for new shock absorbers, front springs and a suspension kit and steering components in 2011, followed by a new exhaust, front wishbones and brake pads in 2012. There is also evidence that the car was serviced around this time. The car has seen a period of inactivity in recent years and has only covered 500 or so miles during the current owner's 8-year ownership.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi.

DVLA says MOT expired over a year ago, is that right? No mention of cambelt having been done any time recently: can you confirm last change please? and what about the rear beam – any work done there?

What’s with the crazy guide price? £12-14k suggests a minty mint example, but this is clearly not that judging from the description, photos, high miles and absence of meaningful history. It’s a tempting project car but not worth anything like the guide. What’s going on @TradeClassics?

Hey Gruber we’ve set the guide to what we think this car is worth right now based on all the inputs we have.

Of course the reserve is lower as Stephen wants to sell…so you could bag yourself a bargain…but we’re all car nuts here and it’s not a ‘project’ car as you say… I know what one of those feels like! If you find me a ‘minty mint’ low mileage with all the history GTi for £12k then do let me know as I’ll snap that puppy right up (hear sounds trawling though classifieds) 🙂

I’ll let Stephen answer your other questions for you to make your mind up on the little car…. cheers Adam TC

Stephen is driving up north so has asked us to reply on his behalf – this is what he said, ” it will have a new MOT put on it once its sold (by his garage) the cambelt was done 400 miles ago and the rear was replaced during the resto in 2015″.
