Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Consigner and Editor

One of the best front-wheel drive chassis of its era, the 106 still raises a smile.

Following the iconic 205 GTI was never going to be easy, especially as the 205 had set the bar so high, Peugeot realised that they would struggle to replace the car when its time was up. Rather cleverly, Peugeot replaced it with two models, the bigger 306 and the smaller 106. More refined and stronger than the 205, the 106 shared the same talent and agility and eventually took on the role of Peugeot's best-selling car of the 1990s.

With the memory of the 205 GTI always looming in the thoughts of the public, Peugeot released the 106 GTI in 1998, with a 16v version of their TU5 1.6-litre engine. Retaining the standard 106's outstanding ride and confident handling, in its phase two incarnation, the model was improved further with side impact bars and the availability of driver and passenger airbags. The GTI also offered electric windows, PAS, ABS, leather and Alcantara seats and stiffer suspension as standard.

This well-looked-after example in silver fitted with leather and Alcantara seats, it dates from 1998 and comes with the benefit of a recent engine rebuild. It has 8 service stamps and three additional invoices for servicing, two keys and an MOT to October 2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Danny the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It drives like a go-cart, really nimble and great around the corners.

Danny is a trade seller and purchased this vehicle from a previous customer. The customer had only owned it for a month before deciding a three-door hatchback wasn’t suitable for his needs. This cars invoices suggest it was owned by several long-term owners in the South West until the 2020s.

Danny will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Its pert and crisp styling is enhanced by the smart bodywork and paint.

Wheels and Tyres

The 14” GTI 5 spoke alloys are in good condition with no significant marks.

The Vredestein tyres date from 2014, with the exception of a more recent 2020 Kumho fitting on the nearside front. All are in good shape with even tread.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks great and there were no obvious signs of corrosion on the panel work. They all have a good fit and positive shutlines. The doors open without issues, although the passenger door needs a little more force to close. Aside from a minor but treatable dent on the lower section of the nearside door and the odd micro dent, the panel work has lasted well. The underside is solid, with no observations of damage, other than the occasional light age-related surface corrosion. The floorpan, wheel wells, boot floor and suspension mounts look good. There is some mild corrosion on the chassis rails under the bonnet and the top of the boot well. The rest of the engine bay is clean.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The body has a positive paint lustre and an even hue. There is a paint inconsistency on the front bumper and some small chips on the nose of the car, some of which have been treated. There is also a minor scuff and some under-paint spots on the near side front wing. The overall finish of the paint strongly suggests careful ownership profiles.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape with no cracks, rubber/plastic seal damage or lamination damage. The rear glass retains its chassis number. The lights and lenses are cleanly presented.

The trim has lasted well, with the bumpers well mounted and no issues with the plastic arches or sill covers. There are mild signs of age on the rear bumper trim inserts but overall the black plastic fittings display neatly.

Interior

Cleanly presented inside, the car has been well looked after over the years.

Seats and Carpets

The leather and Alcantara seats are still supportive suggesting minimal foam wear. The bench fabric on the driver's side seat has discoloured and the leather displays mild creases with minor wear on the bolster.

The carpets and GTI motif mats are neatly presented with no dampness or significant wear. The boot is also fitted with GTI Motif carpet and appears to have seen sympathetic use over the years.

Dashboard

The dashboard and centre console are in good condtion with no damage of note to the plastic. The buttons and controls look positive. The binnacle dials are fully legible and all functions are said to work. Danny pointed out that the tachometer doesn’t appear to operate below around 1100 rpm and the furthest right dial can occasionally read high.

The headlining is in decent shape. The door cards are clean and well-mounted.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is original, a simple affair, and in great order. There are no issues with the gear lever or its gaiter either, good condition as pictured.

Mechanics

The 106 is proof that you don’t need loads of horses to have fun on the roads!

Engine and Gearbox

The car starts up without any issues, the engine idles smoothly without any tapping noises or undulations. It ran smoothly with no mount vibrations. The engine management lights remained off, although the airbag warning light came on periodically. The exhaust produced nothing more than a little condensation, as the engine came up to temperature without any problems.

The 1.6-litre engine is well-presented with decent hoses and ancillaries - it underwent an engine rebuild around 1000 miles ago. We didn’t see signs of fluid seepage. Some of the metal components show signs of age, but overall the engine suggests positive maintenance. The gearbox is slick, with a typically firm clutch but retains a good biting point. The gear changes are direct and swift.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension is tight, with no knocks or vibrations noted. The dampers were smooth in operation and free of squeaks.

The car brakes confidently and evenly, with no pulling to the side. It is free of fade or squeals and there appears to be plenty of life in the discs and pads.

The Drive

The 106, even in its most humble guise is a joy to drive. The chassis is lively, and with ~120 bhp of 16V power, the experience is engaging and makes you want to seek country lanes. The grip is part of the appeal of the 106 GTI, the car is so evenly composed, that you can accelerate out of a bend on a dry road with confidence. The engine pulls very well, smoothly powering through the gears, sounding eager without harshness and notably smooth on tick-over.

There was a little exhaust knocking, which might be a loose rear mount. Fitted with power steering assistance, the feel is excellent and well-balanced with no unwanted play or negative feedback. The oil pressure and engine temperature remained stable after the test drive, with no previous reports of problems.

Electrics and Other

The manual sunroof operates without issues. The car is fitted with an Alpine CD/DAB head unit and parcel shelf speakers. The main gauges have been replaced with some after-market Lockwood white dials. Danny told us all electric are in working order, as far as he knows.

It's also worth pointing out that the exhaust and air box are original spec.

History and Paperwork

A clean example of a hot hatch, the rebuilt engine and a recent service should add confidence to the cars able performance.

First registered in September 1998 by a main Peugeot dealer in the South West, it appears to have spent much of its life in the locality. It has 8 service stamps and three invoices for additional servicing. The timing belt was replaced along with a new water pump in 2022 at ~77K, while the engine underwent a full engine rebuild by Lookers. This covered new big end bearings, head re-skim, resealed sump, cleaned engine block and honed bores costing almost ~£1,400.

Previous invoices pertain to new brake parts and a new coil pack. It was last serviced in October 2024. It comes with its owner's wallet and handbooks, two keys and an MOT to October 2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house. This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
