Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

During the '70s, the world's best drivers would race it out in 15 identical cars - a race modified Porsche 911 RSR IROC - a very fitting choice.

This is originally an earlier 911 that has been re-imagined as a Porsche 911 IROC RSR. The RSR in 1974 took part in the very first International Race of Champions (IROC), a series that bought the best drivers from multiple racing leagues together behind the wheel of identically prepared cars on a number of tracks. In total, only 15 genuine RSR's were ever manufactured. After the races, the cars would go on to sell for millions, Pablo Escobar owned one of the 15.

This replica features a lively 2.7L air-cooled engine, with RSR inspired touches such as the quick-release bonnet and hood catches, roll cage, and bucket seats, while maintaining the car's orginal quirky character.

Paul has owned and garaged this car for the past 20 years, he had his fun of ownership and now is looking for something a little different. The new custodian has the option to keep this RSR car in its current setup, or perhaps return it to an earlier looking car.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Paul, a man with a passion for all '70s motorsport and has owned this car for twenty years.

Recently Paul has enjoyed the occasional run out in the car, but rarely gets a chance to enjoy properly anymore and has therefore asked us to help with the sale.

This is a great opportunity for a new owner to build a 911 just how they want. It could be returned back to an earlier looking car, or maybe continue on the modification journey, or maybe just buy and enjoy just as it is. Whatever your reasons for wanting this car, it really is an opportunity for entry into the 911 club on a cool footing.

Take a look at the history and paperwork section for a detailed view of all the work carried out, including photos dating back to the conversion.

Paul will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

A sensational IROC inspired car with vivid yellow paintwork, a wide hip and squat stance that creates an athletic form.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with black split rim Fuchs all around, these wheels really give the 911 a sporty stance that looks good with the wide rear arches. The wheels have some slight marks to the black paint, and after a little touch up have the potential of looking excellent. The rear tyres are super grippy Toyo Proxies 1TRs and the front are Falken GRS.

You can see wheels and tyres in more detail in the exterior media pack below.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this customised Porsche looks generally good, with some slight signs of age in places. The car is fitted with fibreglass bumpers for lightweight performance.

Around the car, there are some slight signs of bubbling and cracks, along with some surface rust under both doors. Paul reports the doors, boot, and engine bay open and close with ease.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a vibrant Heleglebe Yellow, the colour really represents the RSR of the '70s, and is very attractive, amplifying the wide hips. The paint is in good condition but would benefit from a touch-up in areas. There's the odd stone chip and flaking, in line with the age of the car.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears in great condition, with no significant issues to note.

The rubber trim surrounding the glass looks in good condition with some slight areas of age.

Please take a look at the exterior media pack.

Interior

A fitted roll cage wraps around the cabin together with Cobra racing seats that provide the driver with excellent support and a position ideal for track days.

Seats and Carpets

Performance-focused Cobra seats are fitted within the Porsche, with it's original back seats still remaining. The bucket seats are fitted with Cobra Williams racing seat belts too.

The interior is in good condition throughout with no major wear noted on the seats, door cards, or headlining. A deep clean could really elevate the interior. A interior racing cage is bolted in, and body colour matching. Paul reports another pair of door cards are present and sold with the car.

Please have a look at the photo and video review of the interior to see and assess all areas in greater detail.

Dashboard

The dashboard is very clean and free from any major wear, the classic five dial setup offers you all information you'd ever need - the speedo dial is highlighted in bright yellow; a nice touch.

All of the controls, switches, and dials are presented in good condition and are said to be fully operational to Paul's knowledge.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a sporty Momo racing line steering wheel to take full control of this Porsche. The wheel presents in great condition along with the 5-speed gear stick.

Take a look at the extensive media pack for a closer look at the interior of the car for yourself.

Mechanics

A fast and powerful 2.7-litre air-cooled awaits you and coupled to a 5-speed manual; this 911 provides raspy vocal goodness.

Engine and Gearbox

The car is fitted with an uprated 2.7-litre air-cooled engine which sprung into life after a few turns of the key on our cold start video. Within the mechanical video, you'll also be able to see the car smoothly cruising up to the national speed limit without fuss.

Take a look at the mechanical video for a closer look at the engine bay and a view underneath the car.

Suspension and Brakes

The car's suspension looks good and as reported by Paul, there is a slight knock from the rear right bushing, we thought the ride was comfortable yet firm and noticed no creaks when getting in and out or using the car.

Paul also mentions the rear calipers could do with an overhaul - however, on our trip out the car did pull up quite straight.

The Drive

These early air-cooled Porsches are proper drivers' cars, and the new owner could, if they wanted, take it to the next level.

The sheer driving pleasure a car like this offers maybe a key reason for buying.

Electrics and Other

Stripped from any unnecessary features, this car is a performance-focused 911.

It does however feature a pioneer head unit and Paul reports all the electrics are correctly working to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

A reimagined racing legend, the RSR IROC inspiration is the ideal car for someone looking to really stand out on track day and have the most fun possible.

We think a choice has to be made with this car, i.e. for the new owner to either keep it in its current setup / maybe modify further, or alternatively it would make a great candidate to put it back to an earlier looking car.

Please take a look through the extensive media pack which documents the conversion to a RSR IROC-inspired car in photographic form, and with receipts.

The latest log book says change of keep in 2020 (see media file), however, Paul confirmed that was a change of address and DVLA incorrectly recorded it as a change of keeper too. Paul bought the car in 2001.

The body number is 301359 and there's a picture of this in the image file - this would denote a much earlier car according to Porsche records, however, this can't be confirmed and it's up to the buyer to action their own due diligence.

Paul will be happy to answer any of your questions about the car in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
