Introduction
Paul Wright
With a Porsche 718 RSK costing in the millions - the next logical step for most of us is a replica based on the versatile VW Beetle.
Porsche started to design the 718 RSK in 1956 in preparation for the 1957 race season. It was a continued development of the 550A Spyder, but using a lighter tubular space frame chassis, stronger brakes, and revised front suspension. The RSK stands for RennSport (sports-racing), and K is the shape of the revised torsion-bar suspension setup. Mid-engine and running a 1500cc quad-cam engine taken from the 550A produced 142 bhp. Unfortunately, prices for a 718 RSK are into the millions, putting them out of reach for most of us.
This is when companies like the one that has produced their take on the 718 Spyder come into play, meaning anyone wanting to have the looks of the 718 can do at a fraction of the cost. Based on a VW Beetle chassis means the car is relatively easy to maintain, and spares are readily available.
This was the appeal to our seller Rodney who is a retired mechanic - he fancied something to have a tinker with whilst being cheap to run and drawing attention wherever it goes.
This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Rodney the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.
