Introduction

Kevin Jacutan
Professional Consigner

The 912 made a special appearance after being discontinued for 5 years, this time with a larger 2L flat 4.

The Porsche 912 was an iconic car produced initially from 1965 to 1969 until the 914 superseded it. In 1976 the 912 was revived for 1 year only, filling the vacant position of an entry-level Porsche after the 914 was discontinued. The 912 E was built on the same chassis as the 911, therefore having similarities in the handling. With less weight and more manageable power behind the rear axle, the 912E is more forgiving and less prone to sudden oversteer that the 911 was famous for.

This example has been owned by Chris for the past 3 years, over his ownership he's had a full mechanical overhaul carried out. He bought it as a restored car, and has carried out some choice upgrades like fitting Weber carburettors, as well as getting the gearbox rebuilt to maintain this classic Porsche.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kevin after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

After catching a glimpse of this 912E I couldn't resist buying it, and I've used it as a weekend cruiser ever since.

Chris is a meticulous and knowledgeable Porsche 912E owner. He's owned the car for the past 3 years, having purchased the car from the Porsche Centre in Cheshire in 2018.

He believes the car spent the majority of its life in California, then for a short period in the Netherlands before it was imported to the UK. In his ownership, he's spent in excess of £8,000 bringing this car up to the standard you see today. Chris will be happy to answer any questions you have in the comments below.

Exterior

Iconic styling, finished with the ever popular Fuchs, these classic G body cars always look the part.

Wheels and Tyres

From the factory, the 912E came with the same domed-shaped chrome alloys as the original 911, with the option to upgrade to the popular Fuchs.

This car is fitted with the latter, that appear in very good condition. There are some very small areas of wear to the paint - you'll have to get really close to notice this.

The tyre of choice is Cooper Longlinear GTS, which look great on each wheel and appear to have plenty of tread for a summer of enjoyable driving.

Bodywork

The panel fit and condition are very good, with even and equal panel gaps throughout. Chris reports all doors open and close without problems.

The underside appears solid, and very clean along with the engine bay and inside of the boot, take a look at the photos and videos just to see how good these areas are.

Paint

A classic "Grand Prix" white is applied to this 912E, which really adds to the sleek body lines. The paint appears in excellent condition, it's even in colour and coverage across each panel.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the finish of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition across the car, along with the chrome and plastic trim.

All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degrading, as they were replaced last December.

Interior

The interior was the same as the 911, that iconic 5 dial lineup and familiar leather wrapped cabin.

Seats and Carpets

Chris reports the interior is all original, and in excellent condition throughout.

The seats are in great condition, with just minor signs of ageing, i.e. a small marks on the seatbacks.

The carpets both in the cabin and luggage areas are clean and in good order. One thing to note Chris has told us about is a crack in the shelve under the steering column where your knee knocks against as you climb in. Overall though, a solidly built interior made to last.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks very good, with no obvious cracks, significant blemishes or damage observed.

All of the gauges, switches, controls (including the clock), and dials are said to be functional.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel appears in excellent and original condition which really shows the character and originality of the car.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the interior of this car.

Mechanics

Fitted with a 2.0L flat 4 running on twin Webers, there's still enough power to push these relatively light cars.

Engine and Gearbox

Originally powered by the 914-derived 2.0L "Type 4" flat 4 with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection, which offered 90BHP at just 4900rpm. Chris has switched out the fuel injection for Weber carburettors and carried out a rolling road test along with a full engine service last December.

While Chris had the engine out he requested a gearbox overhaul, where Porsche specialists Performance Porsche Klassiker in Yorkshire replaced two bearings.

We captured a cold start video with the 912E, which can be seen in the mechanical video. The car started without fuss and with ease.

Suspension and Brakes

All the running gear is said to be in well-maintained order, major components have been replaced in the past and it is subject to regular brake fluid changes.

Chris reports the car drives very well, with the suspension offering a firm and performance-focused drive, while the brakes system offering safe and prompt stopping power.

The Drive

Chris reports a fault-free drive, and an enjoyable one. He mentioned that "there's nothing better than getting the car out on a sunny day".

Electrics and Other

We're assured that everything on the car works as expected, including all the electrical systems, dials, gauges, and clocks.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of this highly original Porsche 912E.

History and Paperwork

An imported beauty, this 912E has come from California, now back in Europe where it was originally made.

In December 2020, Chris had the following work carried out by Performance Porsche Klassiker for a sum of £6,674. Remove smog system, remove A/C system and pipes, carried out a repair to the right rear light, carried out body repairs to scuttle panel and passenger door, carried out a full oil and filter change, removed engine, gearbox and replaced the original injection system with a Weber carburetor kit and jetted to suit, powder-coated tin wear, stripped the gearbox and replaced 2 bearings.

If you have any questions, Chris will get back to you shortly in the comments below.

Matching numbers engine yes. The engine is original with the only work being the twin weber carbs as the standard bosch FI is poor

Yes, all the parts – smog pump, aircon pump, all the parts and fuel injection system.

Hi does this mean that the air con has been removed and only the vents remain or has it been re installed and is fully working? Thank you.

The air con pump was mechanically fed from the engine (I still have the original pump – Seiko) but was so poor, reduced engine power and added weight so was removed. All the vents are still there and working but without the benefit of the pump. This was so that I could fit a much more efficient electrical air con unit at some point such as the classic retrofit model.
