FOR SALE

1978 Porsche 911 Turbo (930)

Now available for sale

Introduction

Kulraj Singh Salh
COO

A proper classic poster supercar - the legendary Porsche 930.

The 930 was produced by Porsche between 1975 to 1989, it was known to the public as the 911 Turbo, and was the top-of-the-range 911 model available for its entire production - it was also the fastest production car available in Germany.

This is a '78 example and was when Porsche made its first and most significant changes to the 930, enlarging the engine bore to 3.3L and adding an air-to-air intercooler. The spoiler was reshaped to make room for the new intercooler and changed from the classic 'whale tail' to 'tea tray' design. The result, an increase in power to nearly 300BHP.

This example finished in black over red, was with the previous owner since 1988. The car has been well cared for over those 30+ years, including more recently an extensive restoration by Parr Porsche, the brief being "prepare the car for the next 30 years".

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Kevin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The 930 was a dream car for me. When I found this restored example I just knew it was the one.

Kevin is very familiar with 911's and Porsche in general. Having been lucky enough to own more modern Turbo's, the dream car for him was still the original Type 930. Always keeping an eye out, when he stumbled on this example, the history and recent work completed made it an easy choice.

The previous owner before Kevin owned the car for ~33 years, and never left the car wanting. You'll see a brief history that the previous owner compiled, with the most significant and relevant being a thorough rebuild down to the chassis completed in 2018.

This is a dream car for Kevin, one that he never thought he would be selling, but unfortunately the current economic climate has forced his hand with the sale. He will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

That distinctive body shape, wide wheel-arches and iconic tea-tray rear spoiler, make the 930 unmissable from any angle.

Wheels and Tyres

This 930 sits on original Fuchs finished with matching black centres, they all look great, free from any marks or curbing.

The wheels are wrapped in Pirelli P7's, with the wider rear wheels filling the large arches to perfection, they have an excellent amount of tread for the new owner to enjoy.

Bodywork

The only cosmetic change made to the 3.3L turbos was a new rear spoiler which is positioned on a boxier housing to accommodate the new air-to-air intercooler. With a flattened top with myriad cooling vents and thicker rubber surrounds this newer 930 became known as the 'tea-tray'.

The bodywork on this example is in excellent condition as you can see in the images and videos. The panel gaps look great. rubbers where they should be etc. The only flaw we spotted was a very small bit of bubbling in the paint under the nearside headlight. The car was stripped back by Parr Porsche and any panels that need to be replaced, replaced. Interesting to see that it appears both of the panels with the "kidney bowls" appear to be original, having the factory "nipple" protruding above the door catch.

Please take a look at the images for a closer look at this gorgeous restored example.

Paint

Parr Porsche fully restored the car to the original specification with red interior and black exterior. The paintwork is in excellent condition as you would expect.

Across each body panel, the paint looks even in a coat and finish. Since the restoration, the car has covered ~3,000 miles, used like Porsche would hope. In that time, it's picked up a few minor stone chips on the front splitter, nothing dramatic. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a close detailed view from each angle.

Glass and Trim

Both the glass and trim on the car are in excellent condition. The rubber seals look really good all around the glass and body, most of them likely renewed during the restoration.

Likewise, the glass looks free from cracks, marks, and age. Please take a look at the media for a detailed tour of this restored 930 Turbo.

Interior

The full leather upholstery finished in red offers timeless good looks.

Seats and Carpets

You'll find gorgeous sports seats with the old style squared seat bolsters, finished in red leather in this 930. These seats are in really good condition, they look excellent.

That classic carpet wrapping the lower half of the car as you'll see in all impact bumper 911's of this era. The car has a new set of "Turbo" overmats in place. Take a look at the videos for a guided tour of this 930 interior.

Dashboard

The familiar five gauge instrument binnacle features a central tachometer with integrated boost indicator flanked to the right by a speedometer and clock.

The dashboard is in excellent condition all the glass is free from humidity or marks and Kevin reports all the dials and gauges are working as they should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Porsche three-spoke steering wheel with matching gear stick can be found in this restored example. Both are in great condition and nicely line up with the rest of this car.

Mechanics

On par with anything Ferrari and Lamborghini had to offer at the time, the brutal power and handling earning the name the 'widow maker'.

Engine and Gearbox

To keep up with the competition Porsche enlarged their engine to 3.3-litres and fitted a host of other new parts. Output was up to near 300BHP.

Along with the visible exterior renovation, the engine was rebuilt in 2016 at ~93,111 miles by Parr Porsche. At that time the studs were improved to Titanium examples, take a look through the invoice history that details the work completed to leave the heart of this car beating strong. The gearbox was similarly rebuilt, and selecting gears while manoeuvring the car for the photography was an ease on a gearbox that's 41 years old.

Kevin hadn't started the car in a number of weeks, you'll see from the video it burst in to life on the first ask. The car had a maintenance service in the middle of December 2020.

Suspension and Brakes

The 1978 930 had some other tricks up its sleeve in addition to the bigger power plant. Namely upgraded suspension and brake units.

The previous owner writes that he had the brakes rebuilt to a "race standard" and the shocks have also been upgraded to better units. Kevin reports a great sporty ride in this 930 Turbo, "it handles great and stops as it should too". The brake fluid was changed in December 2020 as part of the cars annual service.

The Drive

Kevin reports a faultless drive and a true experience. He reports the 3.3L pulls strong and you can hear/feel the turbo kicking in between the 4,000 and 5,000 rpm range.

Please take a look at our mechanical video to see the car starting from cold faultlessly.

Electrics and Other

This 911 Turbo has a lot of equipment as standard, including electric windows, sunroof, four-speaker stereo, air-conditioning.

During the restoration process, Parr fitted the new retro-styled "Porsche Classic" head unit, along with accompanying USB charging slots too.

History and Paperwork

The Type 930, the 911 Turbo you've always wanted, extensively restored by Parr Porsche, this car is ready for a new owner to enjoy and cherish for years to come.

Professionally restored to a very high standard by Porsche specialists Parr, this excellent 930 comes with lots of paperwork to support its ~96,700 miles of history. The work that was carried out as detailed in the invoices, was under the brief of ensuring the car is ready for another 30+ years of enjoyment.

Kevin has experience with a number of Porsche's and specifically 911 Turbo's too. This was a dream car for him, and one that he's happy to have enjoyed for the last couple of years but it now forced to sell. Discussing the car with him during the consignment, it's clear to see his passion in the marque, and that's reflected in the car available for sale now. The car was serviced in December, which included a brake fluid change too as per the service records.

We've actioned our usual checks on this car; Seller ID, V5C, HPi check.
