Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Exhilarating performance and elegant design captures the spirit of the late '70s whilst paving the way for Porsche’s legendary legacy.

Launched in 1978, the SC (Super Carrera) replaced the previous Carrera 3.0 model and it features a lighter aluminium engine initially producing ~180bhp. Production of the SC ran until 1983 with its replacement, the Carrera 3.2, subsequently launched in 1984.

This model features the Sportomatic semi-automatic transmission, three gears with no clutch. The Sportomatic was only available as an option on the 911 SC for one year, 1979, making the car we present here a very rare opportunity, with only ~178 ever made for the UK market.

It is estimated the current owner has spent around ~£20,000 on the car so far, carrying out a rebuild of the automatic transmission, lowering the sports suspension, upgrading the replica Fuchs wheels, adding a double outlet exhaust and replacement for a Momo steering wheel. All original parts, including the Cookie Cutter wheels and steering wheel, are included with the final sale.

Ultimately the Porsche does need further restoration works carried out to it, particularly on the interior. With the right levels of care and attention, this 911 SC should be a real showstopper, especially given the work already completed and rare status.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Stuart the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The rarity of this car is what first caught my eye, it's a real piece of automotive history.

With an interest in Porsche for as long as he can remember, Stuart, the current owner, knew this was the car for him, he tells us, "I've wanted to keep the 911 largely original and it really was a labour of love. I invested over £20,000 to maintain its factory authenticity as I wanted to preserve its history as much as I could".

Being a bit of petrolhead, Stuart lets us know, "The driving experience is truly unparalleled. It offers the thrill of a manual with the convenience of an automatic. The acceleration is exhilarating, and the gear changes are smooth yet responsive. It's a perfect blend of classic charm and dynamic performance and feels so light and responsive out on the open road".

After many years of restorative work and effort put into the car, Stuart feels the time has come to help the car find a new owner, he said, "After a decade of ownership and countless enjoyable drives, I feel it's time to pass this special car to a new enthusiast who can appreciate its uniqueness and perhaps take on projects like refreshing the interior. This car deserves an owner who can dedicate more time to its preservation and enjoyment".

The proceeds from the sale of this 911 will help Stuart work on his next Porsche project.

Should any further questions be required on the car, Stuart will be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

Sleek lines, flared fenders, and signature wide rear end capture the essence of classic Porsche design.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 17" replica Fuchs wheels finished in gold, the wheels appear in great condition with no signs of any concerning damage from our observations. The original black 'cookie cutter' wheels are also included in the final sale.

The 911 is fitted with Avon ZV7 tyres showing a tread spec of 205/55 at the front and 225/50 to the rear. These appear to be in good condition, dated from 2016 / 2017 with a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

Looking over the 911 on our visit, the car maintains great looking visual panel gaps and both doors, bonnet and the boot open and close smoothly. There were observations of corrosion to the exposed panelling in the interior sections.

We did note signs of marking to the drivers door. Ultimately, the Porsche would benefit from restorative works on the interior bodywork sections to bring the standard of the presentation up.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a lovely, stylish Light Blue Metallic (Paint code J4) the paint coat overall shows in good condition and compliments the car well. We did note some signs of paint run to the panels, which we've covered in additional detail in our exterior review video.

We noted some lacquer peel to the front nearside quarter. There were a few stone chips noted to the bumper and rear quarters. We noted some signs of wear underneath the Targa badging on the roof pillar sections and on the door edges.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the Porsche shows without concern and in line with the age; we didn't notice any cracks or discolouration on our visit. Window seals also look in good condition when looking over the car.

Porsche branding was present on both sides of the door sides. The trim and seals are all in place with Targa branding and relevant Porsche logo badging present.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video. We take you across all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

Interior

Classic elegance and driver-focused design shine with iconic dials and meticulous details, highlighting Porsche's luxury and performance.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the 911 are finished with a stitched black leatherette, a little luxury touch from the late 70's. There's a rip and a tear in the drivers seat which will need work to repair. The passenger seat showed in better upkeep, mirroring the condition of the smaller rear bench seats.

The main carpet of the interior showed in a respectable condition, although will require restorative work to bring the cabin up to the standard in once was in. We cover the cabin area of the 911 in further detail in our interior review video.

Dashboard

All original, the black dashboard appears to be in good condition for its age, although as shown in the interior review images, will need works completing to bring the quality back up. We noted sections of this area are coming away from its fixtures and underneath the dash will need its coverings replaced.

The dashboard shows the odometer displaying ~3,052 miles at the time of our visit. The dials, switches, and controls show nicely in the interior sections. Overall, this could be a really fantastic car with some love, time and attention spent on it.

Our interior gallery section takes you through some closer images of the Porsche dashboard - head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A sporty Momo steering wheel is installed in this cockpit; an extra upgrade from the current owner. The wheel has a lovely black leather finish and there were no real concerns observed here.

The gear stick displayed signs of wear related to its age, but had no major damage noted. The handbrake appeared to be in good condition.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

A truly unique drive setup; three gears with no clutch - the Sportomatic system provides all the engagement of a manual but with added convenience.

Engine and Gearbox

Whilst looking over the 911 we noted that the car starts from cold without any issues and drives well. Stuart tells us, "The engine is robust and leak-free. I park it on my driveway without a drop of oil noted".

The 911's smooth Sportomatic semi-automatic gearbox was shown to be working well as demonstrated in our On the Road video.

We took the car on some local roads with the current owner to gain a better understanding of what this vehicle offers. During the drive, we went through the motions, shifting through the gears in the 911 and receiving an overview from Stuart's perspective on the car's performance and mechanical history.

Please take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and for a closer look underneath the Porsche, as well as an overview of the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs, or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and the Porsche gave us no concerns in its performance or handling.

The brakes felt great and were easily able to bring the 911 to a stop.

We cover the underside of the car in our 'Mechanical Gallery' section. Head over to our video section, where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

The Porsche felt comfortable on our test drive, riding with no issues through our journey on the road. No shakes were observed or issues were heard on the road and there were seamless changes through the gears.

Stuart tells us his own experience of driving the 911, "Driving this car is a unique and exhilarating experience. The strong, smooth engine delivers impressive performance, while the three-speed automatic transmission offers a perfect balance of control and ease".

He goes on to say, "It's remarkably agile and responsive, especially at speed. It's a joy to drive, combining classic car character with effortless performance".

Overall, a really smooth and enjoyable drive out where we heard no unwanted noises or anything that caused us a concern. Our 'On the Road' video gives an overview of the car on some local roads and how it performs whilst driving.

Electrics and Other

All switches, dials, and gauges appeared to be in respectable condition. Stuart mentioned that he's had no issues with the electrical elements of the car and confirmed everything working correctly.

An upgraded Clarion CD stereo system was present in the cabin. All original parts, including the 'Cookie Cutter' wheels and steering wheel, are included with the final sale.

History and Paperwork

Although some time and care from its next owner will be required, the 911 SC is a rare find with only ~178 ever made for the UK market.

Stuart, the current keeper, lets us know, "While many owners opt to replace the automatic gearbox with a G50, It was my first automatic. I've made minor, reversible modifications like wheels upgrades and steering wheel replacement, but I've kept all original parts for the new owner to decide on their preferred setup. Overall, I've invested over ~£20,000 to maintain its factory authenticity".

A handful of modifications have also been made to enhance the Porsche. These include lowered sports suspension, replica Fuchs wheels and the installation of a Momo steering wheel. All original parts, including the 'Cookie Cutter' wheels and steering wheel, are included with the final sale.

A previous non-original whale tail was professionally removed, with the holes welded and the lid resprayed. The only major works carried out, have been a professional rebuild of the automatic transmission by Parr, fully documented in the paperwork gallery section.

Optional extras specced from its factory sale include; impact absorbers, electric mirror on passenger side, headlamp washers, rear wiper, leather steering wheel, coloured windows, power windows, Sportomatic, cruise control and chrome parts.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Finn, just to say we let you make your own mind up on the value. There’s a little ‘Learn More’ link by the place bid button that tells you about our reserve policy. I can tell you that you have to be the highest bidder to get first refusal if the car doesn’t hit reserve – we do expect it to hit in this case. Cheers Adam

Hello there Stuart,

Does the whale tale that you removed come with the car ?

Also, does the car use any engine oil over a certain amount of time etc? I.e Every month or so you have to put half a litre in ?

Thank you again and

Hi there,

You mentioned that uprated sports suspension has been fitted to the car. Which type is this eg: Bilstein, Eibach etc?

Can you give more detail about when it was fitted and confirm its fully height adjustable.

Thank you!
