Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

Whale tail? Check. Fuchs alloys? Check. Air-cooled 3.0L flat-six? Check. This 911 SC has it all.

It feels like the 911 has been around forever. First appearing in 1964, its silhouette hasn’t changed too much since then. In recent years, it has grown quite large compared to when it launched in the '60s. The G-series model has to be one of the most iconic shapes of the 911, from the sculpted front wings, following the shape of the headlights, to the huge whale tail at the rear.

This specific car is a 1983 911 SC. It comes to market from ~17.5 year ownership, and has had important work completed at different times in its life through use. It had an interior retrim in 2016, bodywork as necessary too over the years, and a top end engine rebuild along with a gearbox rebuild. It comes with its original service book, many MOT certificates, a huge number of receipts, two sets of keys, and is MOT exempt.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've had this car a long time, I used to enjoy driving it, but more recently it doesn't get enough use and deserves to be driven.

Paul tells us candidly, he bought the 911 SC online after a few drinks back in 2006. Luckily for him, his wife approved when it arrived! Having purchased the car as a bit of a project, Paul has invested many hours in bringing it back to a former glory. This has included in his ownership, bodywork repairs as necessary, a full respray, interior retrim, and a gearbox rebuild along with other maintenance as necessary.

Paul enjoyed his time restoring the SC and driving it, but he has found that he hasn’t driven the car as often as he used to in recent years. As a result, he has decided to sell it through us. Paul will be on hand to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Guards Red paint, a whale tail, and Fuchs alloys give this 911 SC its iconic look.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16" Fuchs alloys, finished with gloss black centres and chrome painted rims, all appeared to be in good condition. Both the paint finish and chrome showed signs of age in places though, but no major damage was noted.

A full matching set of Nexen tyres is fitted to the SC, all in good shape with a good amount of tread remaining. The front tyres are dated from 2016, and the rear from 2017.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the 911 appeared to be in great shape, we didn’t notice any dents or other damage. Both doors and the bonnet opened and closed easily, with panel gaps appearing visually consistent around the car. Paul had any necessary action to the bodywork to remove corrosion actioned in 2016 such as to the sills etc as detailed in the invoices. As a result we didn't observe anything obvious in the usual hot spot areas, and only noted a small area in the middle of the nearside front wheel arch.

Since the "whale tail" spoiler was installed, the engine cover struts do not hold the weight of the lid. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Guards Red" paint looks in great condition, with good coverage and an even lustre and colour. Being picky, we did notice some small scratches at the bottom of the engine cover on the offside, as well as a small section where the paint was slightly uneven above the rear quarter window on the passenger side.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

All the glass appeared to be in great condition; we didn’t notice any chips or cracks in any of the windows, and all the seals looked to be in good shape as well.

The plastic trim around the car was also in great condition, and the badges looked excellent. If we’re being picky, the passenger side door was slightly faded, and some normal discolouration and marks to the lower rubber chin. Paul has fitted a reverse camera, which sits above the rear number plate.

Interior

The SC features black leather seats with red piping to complement the exterior, and the classic 911 driver layout.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats are in good shape, having been retrimmed and refurbished as necessary in 2016. Just a small amount of wear noted on the driver's seat bolster and signs of age evident in the form of creases in the leather.

The red carpets in the SC were also in good condition, with very little wear observed. We didn’t notice any stains on the carpets either. The headlining in the car does show its age in the form of some tears and staining as pictured.

Dashboard

A five-dial setup greets the driver, with the most important dial-the rev counter-positioned in the centre. All dials appeared clear and clean, and the odometer read approximately 166,755 miles at the time of our visit.

The dashboard looked free of any cracks or other damage. Paul has installed a screen for the reverse camera on the top right side of the dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A steering wheel from a 993 generation has been installed, and appears to be in good shape, showing only slight signs of age.

The gearstick and its gaiter were also in good condition, with only minor signs of wear, and all numbers were easily readable.

Mechanics

With a 3.0L air-cooled engine in the rear, and a manual gearbox, and no driver aids, the 911 SC is a true analogue driver’s car.

Engine and Gearbox

The flat-six fired into life on first request with a raspy note. While cold, the cars idle undulated a bit, this settled down when the engine was warmed up. Out on the road, the engine delivered plenty of power. The engine had a top-end rebuild in prior ownership in ~2000 as documented in the history.

The gearbox felt good once warmed up. Paul mentioned that it could be quite stiff when cold, but the gears engaged easily once it had warmed up a bit, typical for this era. A full rebuild has taken place in ~2018 a detailed in the invoices and pictures. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension felt firm yet comfortable on the road, and we didn’t notice any bangs or unwanted noises coming from underneath the car while out with Paul.

The brakes performed well, stopping the 911 without any juddering or pulling.

The Drive

Out on the road, the 911 SC had plenty of power and hugged the tarmac, taking corners in its stride, with no unwanted noises heard during our short drive.

A real joy to drive, it brought a smile to Paul's face. The raw driving experience reminds you of how much fun can be had behind the wheel compared to modern cars.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but we did check the radio, sunroof, electric windows, and reverse camera, all of which were working. The aerial even extended when the radio was turned on and retracted when it was turned off. Paul mentioned that everything else was functioning to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~17.5 year ownership, this car has seen plenty of maintenance and work over the years with use, some 6 boxes worth, with some important elements being; top-end rebuild in 2000, bodywork and paint 2016, retrim 2016, gearbox 2018.

This 911 SC has been enjoyed and maintained over the years. Coming to market from ~17.5 year ownership, a significant amount of work was completed in 2016, including an interior re-trim and bodywork/chassis repairs in June. Earlier bodywork was done in 2009, with the sills being repaired. In 2018, the gearbox was rebuilt, and in 2000, the engine head was also rebuilt. Paul has owned the car since 2007, covering under 5,000 miles during that time. It comes to market with its original service book, two sets of keys, and a comprehensive history file.

The private registration "PBZ 9115" will be included with the car, and the 911 SC is also MOT exempt.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Paul no need to add info on the bodywork repairs as I have reviewed The invoices. If you could send photo of paint that would be appreciated thank you.

Hi,

The small section of uneven paint mentioned is above the rear passenger side window, you can see it being pointed out on the “Exterior Review” video at around 9:35-40.

Thanks,
Colin.

Thank you Paul if you could send or upload a picture of the area in question please that would be appreciated. Additionally how extensive was the ‘bodywork’ that you did. For example sills, kidney bowls, rear seat pan etc.

Hello Paul – does the car leak ANY drops of oil on the floor after standing?
Was the re spray a bare metal re spray and do you have any photos of the work?
The ad mentions some uneven paint below the passenger side rear window – have you had an assessment made of this and do you have any photos of this area. Thank you.

Hi Paul,
Are there any oil leaks underneath the car when parked? Do you know if the re spray was bare metal windows out? Has the undulating idle on start up ever been investigated? I am unsure in the video whether the engine stalled or was turned off at start up.
