Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

With its large whale tail, the G series 911 boasts an iconic silhouette.

The 911 has been with us since 1964, and it hasn't strayed far from its roots, even with the latest 992.2 generation. The G series was introduced in 1973, with a production run of approximately 16 years. This marked the second generation of the 911. Some consider the G series 911 the pinnacle of the air-cooled era - the iconic whale tail adds to the theatre of the car.

This particular car is a 1984 3.2 Carrera, finished in Pewter. It comes to market after around 25 years with its current owner and was resprayed in 2016 in its original colour. The car is accompanied by a substantial collection of invoices and receipts, pen drives with photos from the respray, two sets of keys, and a current MOT valid until 11 August 2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Brendan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Initially searching for an MG, Brendan spotted this lovely 911 Carrera for sale and has enjoyed it for over 25 years.

Looking for a sports car to enjoy on weekends, Brendan initially had his heart set on an MG. However, when he discovered the 911, he took the leap. He loves both how it drives and how it looks, with the stunning Pewter paintwork shining beautifully in the sun.

Brendan has enjoyed taking the car on road trips around Scotland, but has found he’s not using it as much lately, so he has decided to sell it through our trusted service.

Brendan will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

With stunning Pewter paintwork, colour-coded wheels, and a whale tail spoiler, this 911 ticks all the boxes.

Wheels and Tyres

The original Fuchs alloy wheels, finished with Pewter centres and chrome lips, all appeared to be in great condition. We didn’t notice any major damage, just the occasional age-related scratch here and there.

At the front, a matching set of Continental ContiSport Contacts, dating from 2004, were fitted. While we observed some slight cracking around the edges of the tyres, they still had a decent amount of tread remaining. At the rear, a matching pair of Bridgestone S-02 tyres from 2002/2003 were in good condition with plenty of tread left.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the 911 appeared to be in excellent condition. Both doors, the bonnet, and the engine bay opened and closed as expected, with a satisfying clunk. The panel gaps were well-aligned, and we didn’t notice any visible signs of corrosion or dents on any of the panels.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Brendan had the car treated to a full bare-metal respray in 2016, returning it to its original Pewter colour, and it has been very well maintained since. The paint has an even coverage and tone throughout, with no major scratches noted, just the occasional stone chip at the front.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass around the 911 appeared to be in excellent shape, with no chips, cracks, or scratches visible. The seals also seemed to be in good condition.

The trim was similarly well-preserved, with the rubber bumper sections looking clean and intact. However, we did notice some slight paint flaking on both door handles - an easy improvement.

Interior

With brown leather seats featuring Pascha centres, the interior of this 911 is a true time warp to the 1980s.

Seats and Carpets

The seats were in great condition; Brendan mentioned that the driver's seat had been retrimmed, and it showed very well.

The brown carpets also looked excellent, with no noticeable stains. The door cards were similarly in great condition. However, Brendan did point out that the roof lining was showing its age a bit, with a couple of marks and a tear on the edge next to the sunroof on the passenger side.

Dashboard

The black dials with red needles looked great and were all functioning as expected on the road. The odometer read approximately 113,626 at the time of our visit.

The brown leather extended onto the dashboard, which was in excellent condition, with no visible splits or cracks.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Porsche wheel was in place and generally in good condition, though it did show some signs of age on the rim.

The gloss black gear knob was in good shape, with only mild signs of use, while the stick and rubber gaiter also appeared to be in good condition.

Mechanics

The 3.2L air-cooled flat-six engine has a very distinctive sound, enhanced by pops even at idle.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine started on the first attempt and sounded great. We didn’t notice any unwanted noises coming from the engine on startup or while driving with Brendan.

The manual gearbox engaged gears smoothly on the road, with no crunching or other unwanted noises from the gearbox.

Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension felt supple during the short drive with Brendan, and we didn’t hear any unusual noises from underneath the car. The brakes felt sharp, bringing the car to a stop without any shakes or pulling through the steering wheel.

The Drive

Taking the 911 out on the road reveals its sporty pedigree, with plenty of performance under the driver's right foot. Gears engaged smoothly, and the car handled corners effortlessly, with no complaints from underneath.

Electrics and Other

The 911 featured few electrical components, and although we didn’t test everything on the day, we checked the sunroof was operating as expected, and Brendan confirmed that everything else is working.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market after nearly 26 years with Brendan and benefiting from a respray in 2016.

The 911 comes with a folder full of invoices and receipts for various parts over the years, including a fully documented bare-metal, glass-out respray between 2015 and 2016, wheel bearings in 2017, a track rod end in 2022, and brake calipers in January of this year. It also includes a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, two sets of keys, and MOT certificates dating back to 1994. The car has a current MOT valid until 11 August 2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Brendan. Thank you to you and the Trade Classics team for the enormous detail. A question please: I notice that from Sep-Nov 95 there were some very serious issues with both the gearbox failure and tappet-tightness resulting in a misfire and many months of back-and-forth with Meridien Majestic.
In the Trade Classics description of the mechanics, a reference to ‘pops at idle’ is noted.
Are these two issues related? i.e. are there still misfire issues with the car, throughout your ownership?
    Thanks,
    Daniel

Hi Brendan, unfortunately I am unable to come and view your lovely 911, so I am going with my gut, can you tell me if there’s any fluid leak’s at all (oil, coolant) ? Also when the respray was done were the door handles left as patina due to being original paint on them, or were they repainted and it’s come off.
    Many thanks

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
