Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The 928 was a ground-breaking car when it was launched in 1978, a luxurious sibling to the 911.

The 928 started life with several bows to its string, which set the long-lived design on a path of desirability that is still recognised to this day. The Porsche development department was busy in the late 70s, as the brand explored the possibility of replacing their well known but niche rear-engined 911. The 928 was proposed to replace it, but the 928 offered a far more practical and comfortable philosophy. It looked like no other car before or after, and due to its cutting-edge body technology and advanced engine management, it won the 1978 European Car of the Year title. It not only set the template for the future of the brand but also the grand touring car.

Like most sports cars of this vintage, condition is the key factor. Luckily, this 1984 Series one car has seen a high level of restoration yet retains an authentically aged interior. This example has been completed in flake cherry black paint and gives a unique opportunity to enjoy the luxurious attractions of a former flagship Porsche classic with only three previous owners.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Arben the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

The exterior presentation offers a sense of elegant menace, these early cars with the sharper front end have a sportier look.

Wheels and Tyres

Seeing a 928 with period correct wheels is something of a rarity these days, it's great to see this early example with "Teledial" alloys. They present in very good shape, with minor signs of wear on the paint. The car has a full set of Berlin tyres, all were fitted on the car in 2019 and therefore show a very good level of thread.

View the photo gallery for a detailed view.

Bodywork

The car was subject to a full body restoration, with pictures shown in the history gallery. As a result of this recent renovation, the car presents in excellent condition.

The structure, floorplan, bulkhead and inner wings are in very good shape. The car has a positive reputation for body durability, this is enhanced by the condition of the external panels. There are no issues with the opening and closing of the doors - although the bonnets struts while fully operational will need minor work. No panel work dents were observed and the panel gaps and fit were of a positive standard.

Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at this beautiful car.

Paint

The glossy black cherry paint has a pleasingly even and thick application. It has a metallic flake that can be seen in the sunlight. There are no significant signs of wear on the bumpers, with no scrapes, scratches or paint chips noticed.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections showing the condition of the car, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

All of the glass and trim are in good shape, with the rubber sealing and trim all appearing correct and intact.

Interior

Much of the striking original interior fittings have been retained, creating an authentic atmosphere.

Seats and Carpets

The interior appears to be mostly original, with the striking red leather dominating the cabin. The fittings, seats, door cards and trim are in good shape, with typical age-related wear noted on the seats, but free from any significant damage. The piping is intact and the electric operations of both front seats have been fully tested and can be viewed on the interior review video.

The carpets and headlining are in good condition, the cabin is dry with no signs of dampness. A tiny amount of water was noticed in the off-side corner of the boot, but this is likely to be due to a minor rubber leak. Take a look at the Interior Review video and photographs to get a real sense of the condition of the interior.

Dashboard

The facia padding is in good shape, with no significant signs of damage or wear. There are a few holes drilled on the side of the centre console, probably for a car phone once upon a time, but this is the extent of any imperfections. The stitching has lasted well, with some signs of wear on the centre console but well in line with the age of the car.

The controls are in good shape, with minor signs of wear on the plastic switches. All are said to be functional, including the electrical window lifts - although the passenger side will not close completely. The drivers' side door mirror control switch and the interior mirror will both be replaced in time for the sale. The instrument cluster dials and binnacle housing are in good condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever are in good condition with no significant wear or damage to note. Period items, like the steering wheel, were shared with the sportier sibling, the 911.

Mechanics

Its V8 burble still pounds confidently without missing a beat, these GTs were a very different proposition to the 911.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine presentation suggests a level of attention, with the major components such as the radiator, ancillaries, hoses and wiring looking good. The cold start video did not suggest any issues with the ignition and no unwanted noises were heard during the short road test.

These cars are capable of racking up huge mileages, so the 928s reputation for durability should still ring true. The car has been fitted with a new battery and the three-speed automatic shifter selects gears cleanly and did not appear to slip. The exhaust is very solid with no evidence of blowing.

Suspension and Brakes

An external scan at the running gear bodes well, with the restoration taking care of the core components. No issues were evident with the suspension or braking during its short test drive. No juddering or squalling was observed from the brakes, with the ride compliant with the roads with no knocking or thuds coming from the suspension. The steering was vibration-free at low speeds with no issues with the power steering.

The Drive

The 928 was considered one the worlds best grand tourers when new, and its talents of effortlessly cruising with style and panache have not been diluted over the years. Surprisingly agile to drive, the 928 can seat 4 people and their luggage can be comfortably propelled thanks to the 4.5-litre, fuel-injected V8 engine.

The high number of survivors speak volumes about the build quality and reliability, with the later cars taking the limelight, the styling purity and uncluttered design of the original still has the ability to turn heads.

Electrics and Other

The novelty of the electric headlamps lift operation was repeatedly tested and operates without any faults. All of the lighting works, with no issues with the rest of the electrical system.

History and Paperwork

This early example has been subject to an extensive restoration, with bags of originality and the shark nose front end, this GT looks a great buy.

Although not coming with any paperwork, the car has been subject to an extensive ground up restoration, as can be viewed in the paperwork gallery. The car will be sold with a new MOT, and so the value in this vehicle is very much in the good stead it stands in today. If you're in the market for an 928 you can drive with confidence, this should definitely be on your list.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Also notice that the registration document was only issued on 18/01/22
Was that a change of ownership?
If not what was the reason?

So take the registration number off the registration document you have displayed on here PJI1778 and put it into this site.. https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk and it tells you that this car is BLUE and was first registered in1st August1993 and has never been on the road in Britain legally in the last 20 years because it has never had an MOT under that registration number,

Your pictures of the black car shell abroad somewhere show that the original carpet was black and its original trim; it had black trim not red

This car is by evidence not all original

It may be exactly as you bought it from the old man in 2019 but how and from where all the bits came together it is impossible for us to find out.

you say you have had “THE CAR” from 2019 and you spent that time restoring WHICH car?
I think we have established there are probably bits from three cars in this restoration , different ages and different colours
What did YOU get to restore?

Did you purchase this car as it appears now already rebuilt and restore
thatO
Orare you the person who put it all together from the different bits?

Hi Arben- could you just clarify that the car has been imported? I see on the V5 the date of first registration is 1993, the date of manufacture is 1984, the actual year of manufacture is 1980, the car is registered as blue but it’s actually black??? Is there anything that can go towards verifying the mileage, the DVLA mot history draws a complete blank?
Regards-
Andy

Don’t the pictures of the car during the restoration show it is in a Mediterranean country- Cyprus?
Just trying to get a gauge on the car, it looks great in the pictures but the rest is not really adding up, surely these are questions you asked when you bought it?

Hi, auction update. We have updated the date of the car to be 1980. This is based on the chassis number which aligns to a 1980 Porsche 928. We had originally written 1984 as per the V5 document. This is likely an error on the DVLA’s part when the car was first registered in the UK. Best, Kulraj – Trade Classics

The Government site says this vehicle was first registered in 1993 and has not yet had its first MOT

This Auction lists it as having been first registered in1984
And has done 158k miles

Can you explain this?
