Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Featuring a 3.2L flat-six engine, iconic body design, and an open-top roof, the Porsche 911 Targa stands out as a powerful and highly coveted sports car.

The Porsche 911 has long been recognised as one of the most iconic and influential sports cars in recent history. With its instantly recognisable styling, low driving position, and precision engineering, it’s not hard to see why.

The 911 Targa is no different - with its 3.2L flat-six naturally aspirated engine producing approximately 231 BHP.

This particular example was first registered in 1985 and came in the stunning Pacific Blue paint colour, with a black leather interior.

This car was specified from the factory with optional extras, including sports seats and 16" Fuchs wheels. It has an excellent history, including a full engine and gearbox rebuild several years ago, and Andrew has been enjoying it as a daily car for the past two years.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Andrew the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It is a pure driving experience, which is sadly disappearing nowadays.

After ten years of Porsche ownership, Andrew’s last Porsche was a left-hand drive 1968 Porsche 912. This led to wanting something with a little more power and right-hand drive, which is what led him to find this very original 1985 Porsche Carrera Targa.

Even though the love for Porsche driving will always continue, Andrew plans to downsize, meaning there may be no garage at the new property - even though the car is a daily driver, it must still be tucked away at night.

Please feel free to ask Andrew any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

With the Targa, you get the best of both worlds - a hard roof for the damp weather, with the ability to remove it in the summer.

Wheels and Tyres

The Fuchs wheels were refurbished several years ago. Some patches of white worm have appeared in places but could easily be refurbished again if required. The Avon tyres are in good order, with plenty of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery for a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The Porsche's bodywork is thought to be largely original - the doors align well, with equal gaps and the car looks to be in solid condition - this is validated by a current MOT that has no bodywork advisories listed.

As you will see in the images / videos, there are some blisters around the car, but nothing has broken through the paint. These are most noticeable on the bumper and the lower side of the driver's quarter panel, just in front of the wheel and around some of the seams.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the car's condition for yourself.

Paint

Finished in Pacific Blue Metallic, the paintwork is in good condition, with the issues as mentioned in the bodywork section.

In the sunshine, the paintwork comes alive and shows the Targa off at its best.

The images have been taken from various angles to show the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own opinion of the paint's condition.

Glass and Trim

All windows appear in good condition, with no noticeable scratches, and the electric windows operate correctly.

The removable vinyl roof panel has a couple of small splits on the edges, which are age-related and would not take an enormous amount or work to rectify.

The headlights are in good condition with no damage.

The rear light lenses have a couple of very small fractures, but the iconic Porsche reflector panel is in good condition.

Interior

The black leather sports seats feel like a well-fitted suit as you lower yourself into them.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are in very good condition for the mileage covered, with just a small amount of colour wear on the driver’s bolster. The rear seat squabs and both door panels are in good condition with no damage.

The original carpet has some wear on the driver’s side, caused by people’s feet rubbing against it when entering and exiting the car. Inside, the boot area is clean and tidy, with the spare wheel, tool kit, and tyre inflator present.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The black vinyl dashboard is free from any splits or cracks.

The instruments are working correctly, and the mileage is reading approximately ~185,224 miles at the time of our visit, it is a daily driver so the mileage may increase slightly before the end of the auction.

Please see the interior gallery for more high-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the original black leather steering wheel, this has some patina in keeping with the age and mileage of the Porsche. The gear knob clearly shows the numbers 1-5 and R.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The 3.2-litre flat-six is the perfect powerplant suited to the 911 Targa, producing approximately ~231 BHP.

Engine and Gearbox

The Targa's engine fires up straight away and runs with no issues. As this is Andrew’s daily car, maintenance is key, and the service history during his time, as you will see, is second to none.

Fitted with a five-speed gearbox, the gear selection is on point, as you would expect.

Suspension and Brakes

Some of the front suspension components have been replaced during the last two years while in Andrew’s ownership, and this is detailed in the paperwork. There are no knocks or bangs coming from the car, and the ride is excellent.

The car comes to a stop as it should, with no issues reported. Andrew had the rear dics replaced, and his local Porsche specialist checked everything in the braking system at the same time.

The Drive

Andrew is clearly a Porsche man who has thoroughly enjoyed using the 911 daily, he said “I love that you can never get tired of driving it! It has individuality, and although it is nearly 40 years old, it is reliable and starts first time every time. If I don't drive it for a couple of days, I actually miss the experience—it is always nice to get behind the wheel and drive.”

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear appears original and seems to be working correctly.

The factory Blaupunkt head unit is in place, retaining that proper '80s feel.

History and Paperwork

There is certainly a good few nights' bedtime reading when looking through the extensive history file.

There are good paperwork collections, and then there’s this one, which is, to say the least, extensive!

Aside from regular servicing and MOTs, two main jobs to note are the rebuild of the engine, which took place in 2005 at approximately 125,588 miles, and the rebuild of the gearbox, which was done 12 months later. Both were carried out by R.G.A Porsche Centre, where the car was serviced for several years.

This is a nice example of a well-maintained Porsche Carrera Targa, which Andrew has enjoyed driving as his daily car for the past two years.

Ready to get connected to the road and bring back some excitement into your regular commute or weekend blast? The 911 Carrera Targa is waiting for you.

We've done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information provided by the seller in the listing above. However, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail. This has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything in this listing to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time—we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car—just like in a traditional auction house.

Hi Andrew, can you advise when the engine was rebuilt and what was done for the rebuild.

Hi, on engine photos from the underside there seems to be an oil leak (Driver side) covering the heat exchanger. This is not mentioned in the description. Do you know where that leak is coming from?
