Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

You'll enjoy the open-top experience with this fantastic 911 convertible, hear that flat six sing.

By the early 80s, Porsche was at a crossroads with the 911's future. Earmarked for deletion, a change of heart, and a revival of the Carrera name proved to be a turning point for the 911. It was offered with three body shapes, a Coupe, a Targa and a Cabriolet, all sporting a new 3.2-litre engine with numerous upgrades. Yuppies were overjoyed and took to the re-invigorated 911 in their droves, and it secured its place in 1980s social history.

This lovely 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 is a UK RHD example, and comes to market with just 5 former keepers, low mileage covered for the model, and an excellent history. It is presented in a beautiful 80s colour of "Iris Blue Metallic" over "Champagne" leather sports seats. With a power hood in in dark blue, this car is ready for the summer season.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Stuart the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having never owned a Porsche, the 911 has been one car I’ve always wanted to own.

Stuart has owned this lovely 1986 911 Carrera Cabriolet for just under 12 months. Being on his list of cars to own for quite a while, when he spotted this example, it was too good to miss out on. He was particularly taken by the extensive history, and the fact that it was coming to market locally from long ownership.

He has covered less than ~1,000 miles, and has recently put the car through an oil service at his local classic car garage. With a decision to downsize, the new home won’t have storage like his current dwelling, so the 911 is being sold. Please feel free to ask him any questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

A timeless shape recognised worldwide, the impact bumper generation of the 911 continue to rise in popularity.

Wheels and Tyres

Classic Porsche Fuchs wheels are in excellent condition and complete with centre caps. They are finished in the classic black colour, and there is just a tiny amount of tarnishing to the silver lips.

The 16" tyres have a good amount of tread remaining and show in good condition. Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Walking around the 911, the panel gaps are excellent and matching, often this isn't the case so it's great to see on this car. There are a couple of small stone chip dings at the front, one on the bonnet and one on the wing. The doors open and close nicely, as do the engine cover and bonnet. The door shuts where you often see corrosion from the "kidney bowls" look in great condition with nothing to note, both sides look to be original panels. The only areas to note are the blistering above the passenger headlight, and also some small bits halfway up the rear driver's side quarter, just behind the door.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "Iris Blue Metallic", the Porsche has seen some paintwork at some point in its 37 year life, but the colour match and finish looks even across the car. The paintwork presents exceptionally well and looks fantastic in the sunlight.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in very good condition, with no chips or cracks and noticeable scratches to point out. The window seals and trims are all in excellent condition with no real signs of age.

The electric convertible roof opens and closes as it should and sits nice and tight when closed. There are a few light marks on the rear window but nothing excessive.

Interior

The Champagne leather interior compliments the Iris Blue exterior nicely, and suits the convertible body too.

Seats and Carpets

The "Champagne" leather seats are in good condition, with just patina/wear on the driver’s outer bolster. These are sports seats with electronic adjustment as optioned from factory with the deeper bolsters. The passenger and rear seats are excellent, with just some minor creasing, and both door cards are free from damage.

The carpets are in excellent condition. There is a set of mats fitted which are also in good order. Inside the boot, the carpet is clean and tidy. The spare wheel and tool kit are present, along with a spare Porsche fan belt. Lifting the carpet, you can see the newly fitted fuel tank. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard in the 911 is free from any splits or cracks along the top and the fascia. The instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of 88,028 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the original blue four-spoke steering wheel, this has some of age-related wear in keeping with the mileage of the car.

The gear knob and gaiter are in good condition, matching "Champagne" trip to the seats. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

3.2 litre, air-cooled flat-six - one of the most iconic sounding engines in the Porsche range

Engine and Gearbox

The flat-six fires up without hesitation from cold with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay. On the road, the 911 pulls extremely well through the five-speed gearbox, and the 3.2 litre sounds fantastic all the way through the rev range.

Stuart has had the car serviced recently by his local classic car garage, they metioned a tiny oil leak, but nothing excessive, and quite common to see on 911s of this age. Watch the video review to see the car in action, as well as reviewing the engine bay and underside.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride in the 911 is firm without being harsh, it soaks up any bumps in the road easily, and no knocks or bangs come from either corner of the car.

When it comes to stopping the Porsche, the brakes do this as you would expect, with no juddering through the pedal and in a straight line.

The Drive

It’s a Porsche 911 convertible, what could be better than blasting down the B-roads, roof down, and the sound of the wonderful air-cooled flat-six singing away right behind you. Then there’s the looks, the classic 911 body with a convertible roof that is easily operated with the push of a button.

Electrics and Other

Stuart reports everything is working as it should, and the switchgear looks in good condition with minimal wear. There has been a Blaupunkt headunit fitted, which is working as it should, he mentioned the radio signal is a bit weak.

The car is fitted with an immobiliser, and the car comes with 2 sets of keys as pictured. The car has a standard tonneau for the roof when it is folded, and also a larger one as pictured that covers the rear seats. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

Having a good service history is a vital part of any classic - this 911 is no exception and presents in lovely condition with just 5 former keepers, very modest mileage and a lovely specification from factory.

There is a comprehensive collection of invoices and receipts for work carried out and parts purchased for the 911 over the years. Also included is the original service book, which has some stamps from the late 80s. There is a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirming the spec of the car. The current MOT is valid until 31st May 2024.

Prices of 911s, whether a Coupe, Targa, or Convertible, have continued to rise over the past few years, and there is a good chance they will continue to do so, making this 1986 model an excellent investment opportunity. A lovely well-maintained example which is ready to jump into and drive. What are you waiting for? Summer is upon us, and there’s a 911 convertible here for the taking.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
