AUCTION NOTICE

***Provisionally sold to: Paul Wexham ***

£47,500 was final bid and under the reserve price – as Paul was the final bidder he has first refusal.

HISTORY LESSON

The 930 Turbo is an awesome car.  It’s the poster car of the 1980’s.  It’s the car we all wanted and loved, its dark side reputation as the ‘widow maker’; the only other car to get that title is the AC Cobra.

Being a 1986 model, this car is fitted with the 4 speed transmission as the later G50 box was only put in the 930’s during the final year of production in 1989.

The 930 is fitted with the larger 3.3 engine and just as ‘bullet proof’ as the 3.2 Carrera version.

We mentioned the following in the Carrera 3.2 auction we’re running at the moment; the same applies here. The main things to look out for on 911’s of this era are as follows. Rust around the lower section of the ‘B’ posts and the front section of the front wings as they rust from the inside out, if you see any bubbling in this area then it’s usually too late and will need serious work.  Joins in the scuttle where the front wings join can also be hot spot rust areas and around the windscreen.  We have found no issues on any of these areas.

THE CAR & THOMAS

Thomas Foot has owned this car for nearly two years after importing it from the USA, he’s a proper 911 fan and loves the car but doesn’t drive it as much as it deserves, as he has a 996 4S as a ‘daily driver’. Thomas’ 930 has had various of-the-time modifications completed by Alan Johnson Racing. It’s finished in a stunning combination of Meteor Metallic and lovely burgundy leather interior. It is registered in the UK, and so is ready for the next owner to drive away.

This example has covered just over 77,000 miles, with the mechanics pulling very strong, paintwork and interior in great condition. This 930 Turbo would be a great buy for someone looking for the more aggressive updates, or even a good contender to be put back to stock specification (wheels/front bumper/LE intake delete).

The car is simply stunning and will be a complete bargain for someone that may want a stock 930 Turbo but can’t quite afford the price at the moment.

EXTERIOR

The car has been subject to a full respray at some point during it’s life and has been done very well.  There are very few blemishes / chip and looks stunning in direct sunlight.  We saw no visible colour differences in any panels and have taken paint depth checks that you can see in the photos.

Wheels
16in BBS split rims have been fitted to the car and may benefit from sourcing a set of original Fuchs.  The BBS wheels could be resold and partly fund this transition.

Bodywork
All panels are free from dents, and as you would expect from a restored and dry stored car there is no rust that we saw on our visit. The shut-lines across the entire car look visibly correct and both doors close with that reassuring and quality shut noise that you only get with a 911 of this era.

Paint
The Meteor paint looks factory fresh across the entire car as you can see from the inspection videos.

Glass and Trim
Glass and trim as with the rest of the car are all in good order.

INTERIOR

The interior on this 930 is a very nice place to be.  I sat with Thomas on a short run around his local area and was very impressed with the condition.  The leather has been refurbished and looks like new.

Seats and Carpets
The seats are in amazing condition.  Supple leather and very little wear on the bolsters.  The carpets are also in good condition and match the interior colour.

Dashboard
The dashboard is in matching burgundy, and looks factory fresh. The gauges are in great condition with just some small chips on the ring of the petrol gauge that can be easily rectified (see video).  The oil pressure is pinned to the top; this is almost certainly due to a faulty sensor that needs replacing.  I had the same issue in my 930 Turbo and changed the sensor for under £50 (it’s a tricky job through and you’ll need a crows foot spanner) and that resolved the issue.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick
Both are in great condition as highlighted in our media.  The steering wheel was refurbished at the same time the seats were done.

MECHANICS & ELECTRICS

I found no issues on the short run I took with Thomas.  We drove about 4 miles and a maximum of 60 mph with a couple of turbo bursts.  The car seemed tight with no suspension knocks or rattles.

Engine and Gearbox
The car started fine from cold (see video) and idled correctly with no auto-choke issues.  The engine pulled strong on our run and Thomas had no issues selecting the gears (even when cold).

Suspension and Brakes
The car drives and brakes in a straight line. No issues were highlighted on the short drive we took.

The Drive
The drive was good, gear changing without any issues, and the car handling well. You can see a short clip of the car running on the road, along with some more footage in our “Meet The Owner” video.

Electrics
Thomas reports no electrical issues with everything working as it should.  The car is fitted with air-conditioning.  We didn’t action a check, however, Thomas has confirmed it’s working normally.

HISTORY

This car has covered just under 77,000 miles, and whilst we can’t confirm if this is genuine or not, it does certainly look like it could be correct.

Unfortunately the US service history has been lost.  However, the new owner could action some light research and get in contact with previous owners to piece it back together.  The low reserve also reflects the limited history with this car.  If you are planning on keeping the car then this should be of little concern and judge the car here and in person if you feel the need.

We have checked the VIN number and matches the original paperwork.  The engine number is hidden by the air-conditioning unit so we could not check that personally.

Mileage recorded on HPI check as follows:

76,517 miles recorded on 23 Mar 2017
76,508 miles recorded on 15 Mar 2017
76,074 miles recorded on 30 Mar 2016

OUR SUMMARY

This 930 Turbo is stunning and its condition is amazing.  We love the original stickers in the ‘B’ posts and under the bonnet that help to prove its authenticity.  The colour combination is rare and beautiful.  As mentioned, the interior really is a lovely place to be and be seen.  It’s a very sorted 930 Turbo at entry level money to ‘the turbo club’.

Personally we’d put aside a maxium of £5k to delete the LE intakes properly and put a set of original Fuchs and start the history hunt in the US.  This would pay dividend and increase the car’s value significantly.  Even if you didn’t do that then just run it and enjoy it safe in the knowledge you have a very well sorted and impressive 930 Turbo – the poster car.

Thomas has set a very low reserve, so it will sell to a new owner here on Trade Classics.  With our prediction of around £60k estimate this is a gold status investment even in a market that’s cooled off a little in recent months.

Hopefully you have all the information here to make your decision.  If you want to view the car then Thomas is on hand to show you around – send him a message.  For any other queries please use the comments form below.

A 930 Turbo in any guise is always going to be a winner. Imagine in 20 years time, when the world has gone all “240 volts” on us and this now retro classic moves in vintage territory. Need I say more?

I feel one lucky soul could benefit from this rather quiet auction…it seems a flurry of action focused on snow this time and not this mighty 930.

Is someone ready to chip in who isn’t drained from the freezing temperatures and bag themselves a savvy investment?
