Introduction

Wide hips, open-air charm, and turbo looks - who can resist!

The 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa Supersport stands out as a final-year model of the 3.2 Carrera series before the transition to the 964. Equipped with the M491 "Turbo-look" (Supersport in the UK) package, it combines the aggressive wide-body design of the 930 Turbo with the naturally aspirated 3.2-litre flat-six engine, paired with a smooth five-speed G50 manual transmission. The Supersport package also includes upgraded suspension and larger brakes from the 930, ensuring excellent handling and performance.

The Targa body style adds to the car’s allure, blending open-top driving enjoyment with more rigidity than a full convertible. Its combination of the Turbo-look body, improved performance features, and collectable rarity makes this model highly sought after by enthusiasts. As one of the last in the 3.2 Carrera line-up, the 1989 Targa Supersport is a timeless example of Porsche engineering and design.

Coming to market after ~3 years with our vendor and over ~12 years with its previous owner, this beautifully presented 911 Targa Supersport was recommissioned to bring it up a standard ~2 years ago, to the tune of ~£20,000 in spend. Being a 1987 model, the car has the more sought after G50 5 speed gearbox, and this car is a genuine C16 UK car with "491" option code. In the rarer shade of red "Indischrot (L80K)", and certainly of the period "red over red" colour scheme, It comes with a current MOT valid until 03.05.2024, our vendor will have a fresh MOT carried out in the next few days.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Harry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I got the Supersport because I think it’s one of the best-looking 911s there is.

Harry picked this car up ~3 years ago. The car was showing its age in some places, and so he went about addressing a number of those elements, a recommission of sorts. He estimates that he spent ~£20,000 on the work, as detailed in invoices. Important elements like the Targa roof, addressing areas of corrosion, a new exhaust, renewal of the brakes, and proper service to name but a few.

The car where it has seen little use since the work was completed, the car being part of a collection that he has. Due to not really using the car, he's decided to bring it to market. Harry will be happy to answer any questions about the in the comments section below.

Exterior

Like a 911 fresh out of the gym—pumped up, with its wide hips, iconic whale tail, and plenty of swagger.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original wider Fuchs alloy wheels that came with the Turbo (930), these are in excellent condition, with a new set of coloured Porsche crest centre caps fitted.
The tyres are a matching set of Toyos and have plenty of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery for more detailed images.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the Supersport appears to be in great condition. Some work was carried out on the rear quarter and front wing, and new outer sills were fitted between 2022 and 2023 to address some blistering. The panel gaps appear consistent, and there are no visible dings or dents.

We've provided high-resolution images and videos detailing our observations, so please take the time to review all media files for a comprehensive view of the car’s condition.

Paint

Finished in glorious "Indischrot" red, the paintwork is excellent. Some areas were repainted in 2023 following repairs, and the overall finish is superb as pictured.

Images have been taken from various angles to present the car as you would see it in person. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own opinion on the paint’s condition.

Glass and Trim

All windows are in good order, with no noticeable scratches. Some of the window seals have been replaced, ensuring they are all now in good condition.

The rubber mouldings are in good condition, with minimal signs of distortion. The Targa roof has been refurbished in the current ownership as detailed in the invoices.

Interior

Practical, functional, and comfortable—the perfect place to be.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in red leather, the leather appear to be originals. They have a small amount of patina, expected for their age, and the seats are electric adjustable as pictured.

The black carpets throughout the car are in excellent condition, with no excessive wear. The spare wheel is in place, along with the original tool kit, which has seen better days—but let’s be honest, a lack of use can only be a good thing, right?

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent condition and free from any splits or cracks. All of the instruments present well and are working correctly. The odometer shows a reading of ~92,488 miles at the time of our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original teering wheel is generally in good condition, with just a minor amount of age-related patina.

The gearstick is finished to match the seats and is in similar condition to the steering wheel. Please see the interior gallery for more images.

Mechanics

3.2 litres of pure German engineering, with what is probably one of the most iconic-sounding engines ever made.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting the car is smooth, and the flat-six comes to life with its distinctive air-cooled sound. The car runs with no reported issues, and there was no smoke during start-up. Harry has had a major service actioned, which included valve adjustment as necessary, and had a new standard exhaust fitted too.

Fitted with the more desirable G50 five-speed gearbox, the gear changes are smooth and easily selected once up to temperature, and the 911 pulls well through the gears. Watch the video to hear and see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the 911 is excellent—no knocks or bangs, and the car sits well. Being a "Supersport (491)" the car features the upgraded suspension from the 930 Turbo, rather than a standard 3.2, the same with the brakes too.

The brakes were overhauled in 2023, with the calipers refurbished to bring them back up to standard. The car stops in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

Driving the 911 Supersport is not only fully engaging but also a full sensory experience—the sound, the feel, and even the distinct smell of classic Porsche engineering make every journey unforgettable. And when you park up?

If you don’t turn back for one last look, you might need to question your taste in cars—because a Porsche 911 Targa Supersport is impossible to ignore.

Electrics and Other

Inside, the switchgear is in good condition, with no real signs of wear, and is reportedly all working correctly.

An upgraded Blaupunkt Hamburg head unit has been fitted as pictured.

Since our visit Harry has replaced the missing number plate light, with a genuine Porsche one.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~3 year ownership, this C16 UK car optioned from factory as a Supersport (491), has had ~£20,000 spent bringing it up to standard as seen today in the current ownership.

The 911 comes with a comprehensive history file dating back several years, with plenty of invoices for various parts fitted. The main point of interest in the file is the last few invoices produced between 2022 and 2023 for the recommissioning work Harry carried out on this iconic Porsche. It comes with a current MOT valid until 03.05.2024, Harry will have a fresh MOT carried out in the next few days.

Some of the main work actioned is; new exhaust (standard), brake overhaul (disks pads and calipers), various trims etc, roof reconditioned, new window seals, major service.

We’ve conducted our usual seller checks, including photo ID and V5, and have also carried out a professional HPI history check. This highlights whether the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: This does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our view of the car based on information from the seller above. As you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail—this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything in this listing to assess the vehicle's condition.

Viewings are also welcomed for all our listings, so please get in touch to arrange a suitable time—we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
