Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The second front-engined model from Porsche, this time utilising their very own 2.5 litre engine.

Porsche introduced the 944 in 1982 to replace the Porsche 924 as their entry-level model, although the 924 continued until 1988 as an even lower-priced alternative. Many Porsche enthusiasts considered the 944 to be the first real front engine Porsche, because it didn’t have the Audi sourced 2.0 litre engine from the 924. Instead, the 944 started life with a 2.5 litre straight-4 engine which was based on one-half of the Porsche 928's V8 engine. Based on the earlier 924 body, some noticeable changes included flared wings, flared quarter panel and a larger rear spoiler. In 1985 the 944 underwent its first significant changes. The interior was given a facelift and a much more modern feel and look with a completely new dash and door panels, and to help keep those lines nice and smooth, the radio aerial was moved from the standard vertical position to being embedded in the windshield. Other changes included new front and rear cast aluminium control arms and semi-trailing arms, and a larger fuel tank.

Barry is usually a Mercedes man, but it would have been criminal to turn down a one-owner 1987 Porsche 944.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Barry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I really love this 944, and it is great fun - but now I'd like to find a new owner as really I want to find a convertible for summer use.

Barry purchased this 1987 Porsche 944 in April 2022, and it had been in dry storage since 2014. Usually a convertible fan, the 944 was purchased because of its low ownership and condition. After having the car recommissioned and put back on the road, he has enjoyed it for a couple of months but is now getting itchy feet for a convertible, which is why the 944 and one of his other cars are being sold to fund the new purchase.

Please feel free to ask Barry any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

With its shapely wide arches and '80s styling - the Porsche 944 is a fantastic looking car.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original Teledial wheels, some corrosion has crept in over the years, but it isn’t a huge task for your local wheel refurbisher to refinish them. Barry has had a quote of approximately £250 for all four. The tyres are all matching and look to have not covered many miles since being fitted.
Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The 944’s bodywork is in great shape. The doors align nice and straight with an even panel gap. The bonnet also lines up straight with an even gap to the wing rails. The electric sunroof opens and closes with the touch of a button. The boot lid also opens as it should, staying in place when open, and those ultra cool '80s pop-up headlights are working as they should.

Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior, for you to make up your own minds on the condition.

Paint

At 35 years old, the paintwork on the 944 was looking a little tired, with the odd chip here and there. Before Barry got the car, it had been given some fresh paint to what looks to have been the front panel and sides. The finish is lovely, and the car presents really well with a deep shine to it.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show you the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves and for you to make your own minds up on the condition.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and door windows are in good order, with no apparent scratches, and the seals look in good condition with no signs of shrinkage or perishing.

As mentioned, the headlights pop up as they should; the lenses are free from chips, and there are no cracks in the fog lights and indicator lenses. The rear lights are in the same condition with no damage to point out.

Interior

Burgundy and velour everywhere - an actual time warp car with an immaculate interior.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the Porsche are finished in Burgundy velour and are in outstanding condition! It really is difficult to spot any signs of wear. The rear seat doesn’t look to have been sat in a tremendous amount, if at all, and the door cards are also in excellent condition with no damage to be seen.

Just like the seats, the condition of the carpet is also superb. There is a set of factory mats fitted (yes, they are burgundy too). These have faded, and there is some wear to the driver's heel pad, but they have done their job and kept the main carpet in excellent condition.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

After 1985 the dashboard was refreshed, giving a more modern feel to the 944. You guessed it! Finished in burgundy, the dashboard is free from any splits or cracks. The instruments all work as they should, with the odometer reading ~90,498 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is the original and has some light signs of wear to the rim, in keeping with the mileage of the 944. The gearknob does have some wear where the leather has worn away. This is an item which could be quite easily replaced.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

With a 0-62mph time in ~8.4 seconds - the 2.5 litre front engine Porsche pushes out 158bhp and 154lb-ft of torque.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.5 litre four-cylinder engine fires up as it should with no untoward noises coming from one of Stuttgart's finest. The car has been recommissioned to ensure everything is in order after being unused for several years.

The car drives and pulls well through the 5-speed trans-axle gearbox with no strange noises to be heard.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension looked in good order with no signs of any leaks when we looked under the car. It handles as you would expect on the road, with no noises coming from either corner.

The brakes bring the car to a halt as they should in a straight line and with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

Being a trans-axle car, the 944 has a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution. This gives you great confidence in the car around the twisty bits as it enables you to place it perfectly, and it will react just as you expect it to.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the car is in good order with no signs of wear to the buttons or dials, and everything is reported to be working as it should.

History and Paperwork

With just one previous keeper from new - this 944 is certainly a rare find.

Don’t be misled by the C244 PJC registration. The car is a 1987 and not 1985. The reason for the C plate registration was when the owner purchased the car new, it was the same colour as his previous one, and he had the registration plate transferred to the new one, so his employees didn’t know he had purchased a new Porsche, which may have led to them wanting a pay rise!

Unfortunately, a lot of the paperwork has been lost for the 944, which included previous invoices and service work. However, the V5 is present along with the owner’s handbook and wallet. There is also a collection of tax discs.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, and V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
