Introduction

Isaac Wass

Featuring the iconic whale tail design, 3.2L flat six engine, and the desirable G50 manual gearbox - this 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa is a wonderfully presented modern classic.

The Porsche 911 has long been recognised as one of the most iconic and influential sports cars in recent history, with its instantly recognisable styling, low driving position, and precision engineering, it’s not hard to see why.

The 911 Carrera Targa is no different, with its 3.2L flat six naturally aspirated engine producing ~231BHP, it can achieve speeds over 150mph and accelerates from 0-60 in just 5.6 seconds. This particular example was first registered in 1989 and came as a factory UK "Sport" model, including electronically adjustable seats, white painted wheel centres, and the iconic "Whale Tail" spoiler on the rear of the car.

Not only that but this car has had extensive bodywork restoration carried out, consisting of work on and/or replacement of the outer and inner sills, 'B' pillars, kidney bowls, and wings racking up over 300 hours worth of labour, and coming in at a cost of £11,220 in July of 2017.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Stephen the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having owned this car for 7 years its safe to say I know it inside and out, it has never let me down and has been my pride and joy since the day I bought it.

Stephen purchased the car in January 2015, having been attracted to not only the striking looks of the car, but also its service history and overall condition.

Since then he has spent tens of thousands of pounds in maintaining the car to the highest of standards, including the extensive restoration work carried out in 2017. Speaking to Stephen you can clearly see how proud he is of his pride and joy and, despite deciding to part ways with the car, he has had nothing but trouble free motoring since his purchase.

Stephen has decided that it's time to sell his beloved Porsche in search of pastures new, he’ll be sad to see it go, but happy to know it's in the hands of a fellow enthusiast.

Exterior

From the Grand Prix White paintwork to the iconic ‘Whale Tail’ spoiler on the rear, this 911 Carrera Targa is in superb condition from nose to tail.

Wheels and Tyres

The Grand Prix White forged alloy wheels are a factory standard item and have remained in excellent condition over the years, these are 16" items with this car being a "Sport" specification, we did not note any signs of curb damage, or other such visual defects during our time with the vehicle.

The car is wearing a matching set of Bridgestone tyres all round and these are dated in 2017 making them ~5 years old, however the tread is still plenty and the sidewalls look to be in good condition with no visible damage, cracks, or signs of wear.

Tyre and wheel condition can be easily assessed in our exterior and mechanical galleries, where we have taken many high resolution images for you to inspect for yourself.

Bodywork

Having had extensive restorative works carried out in 2017, the bodywork is in remarkable condition. Despite having had some panels replaced and/or repaired the bodywork looks really good - all panels are straight, and all shut lines are flush.

There is a thorough gallery of images from the restoration process available to view in our mechanical gallery below, and a blow by blow description of all works carried out in our paperwork gallery.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Grand Prix White paintwork was refreshed along with the bodywork, with almost the entire car being repainted as a result of the extensive restoration. The paint does show some minor signs of use, with some almost invisible stone chips to the front end, however overall the paintwork is extremely well presented and there is no visible difference in tone, shade, or colour between painted and original sections of paintwork.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

In 2017 as part of its restoration a brand new front windscreen was fitted and this is evident in its condition. The rest of the glass on the car is believed to be the original factory glass and does not present any visible damage such as cracks, scratches, or chips.

Interior

With optional electronically adjustable seats, 8 speaker sound system, and black leather interior the 911 Targa oozes class and comfort.

Seats and Carpets

The seats were retrimmed in 2002 by Southbound Porsche Trim Specialists in Hampshire, since then signs of wear have slowly started to creep back into the interior, with minor wear to piping around the edge of the seats. However the condition of the hide itself is good and only minor wear to the drivers side seat bolster.

The carpet is again in good overall condition, it is believed to be the factory pile and whilst being over 30 years old it has only suffered one spot of wear on the drivers side sill which can be seen in our interior gallery and video.

Dashboard

The dashboard is well presented, with no obvious damage, sun bleaching, or scuffing. The clocks, gauges, and equipment are all in good condition with no missing or broken dials, switches, or buttons.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is again the original item and has never been retrimmed, as such there is some wear to the leather on the upper right hand side of the wheel. We have pointed this out in our ‘Interior Review’ video.

The gearstick is in good condition and does not show any visible signs of wear, the leather surround is intact and not suffering from any stretching, rips, or splitting, and the the gear knob itself is in equal condition, with the leather not suffering from any major visible signs of wear.

Mechanics

Powered by a 3.2L flat six engine capable of ~231BHP, coupled to the superb G50 manual 5 speed gearbox, and driven through the rear wheels - this 911 Carrera Targa offers a fun and engaging driving experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.2L flat six engine is air cooled and naturally aspirated, offering plenty of pull in any gear and providing typical Porsche reliability. The engine starts first time during our cold start video and idles comfortably without issue.

The G50 manual gearbox is a fan favourite and for good reason, the gear changes are smooth and the gear ratios are perfectly suited to the car, offering easily accessible power in any gear. During our ‘On The Road’ video you can see and hear the engine and gearbox in operation.

Suspension and Brakes

Coming from the factory with the optional sport shock absorbers the ride is stiff enough to offer excellent handling whilst providing adequate comfort even on the less than perfect UK roads. As part of our ‘On The Road’ video we have included high resolution video of the underside of the vehicle, including wheel arches and visible suspension components for you to assess the condition of these items for yourself.

The Drive

During our time with the vehicle Stephen took us for a drive, demonstrating the smooth acceleration provided by the engine and gearbox, the sharp and responsive handling of the sport suspension setup, and giving us a chance to experience the comfort the interior provides.

All in all this particular 911 Carrera Targa drives well for its age and mileage, with little excess cabin noise and a fun and engaging drive.

Electrics and Other

Whilst photographing the vehicle we checked to make sure all the electrical systems were in fully working order such as lights, indicators, radio, and seats, and all worked as expected. The electronically adjustable seats are a nice touch for a car of this age, bringing a hint of modern convenience to the otherwise classic feel of this fantastic Porsche.

The car is now fitted with the updated Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB stereo. This updated stereo is based on the original Blaupunkt Toronto Radio Cassette bringing modern technology including bluetooth telephone & music streaming, USB & SD card connections and digital radio.

History and Paperwork

With paperwork and receipts dating back over the last three decades, and invoices for tens of thousands of pounds in maintenance, restoration, and servicing, it's safe to say that this 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa ticks plenty of boxes.

Stephen has kept extensive records of the money spent on this car during his ownership, as did the previous owners before him. With many stamps in the service book, further receipts for servicing and maintenance, and recent restoration work totalling £11,220, this car is in great condition and has the paperwork there to back it up.

The complete list of optional equipment on the car is as follows;

- Recoil Bumpers
- Blaupunkt Toronto Radio Cassette - Now updated to Bremen SQR 46 DAB stereo
- Rear Seat Belts
- Grand Prix White Forged Alloy Wheels 16"
- Sport Seats with Electric Height Adjustment
- Rear Wiper
- With Spoilers
- Sport Shock Absorbers
- High Fidelity Package including 8 Speaker System with Amplifier

The car will be sold with the registration "F911 WAF", and will be available for collection from the 13th of August onwards for a winning bidder.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi! Has there been any work to the engine? Top end/full rebuild? I couldn’t see anything easily in the history.
