FOR SALE

1989 Porsche 911 Supersport Cabriolet

Now available for sale

Introduction

Kulraj Singh Salh
COO

All the iconic 911 Turbo looks, but with the arguably stronger and more driveable naturally aspirated 3.2 block.

The Supersport version of the 3.2 was created in 1984, Porsche option code M491, or more commonly referred to as the ‘turbo look’. The changes however were not simply superficial. Along with the widebody changes, the car also featured performance enhancements shared with the 930, these were; stiffer suspension set-up, bigger and more powerful braking system and wider wheels for added grip. Sales of the Supersport were particularly strong in America when it was first released, as the 911 Turbo was not available for purchase for the first couple of years. It wasn’t just customers in the USA who bought this option though, this is an all original UK RHD drive example, also being one of the first in the production run to include the all important G50 gearbox.

This example is a UK delivered RHD cabriolet variant from the last year of production - a very special year. Finished in a classic Porsche colour of Guards Red over black / red interior - this car is a testament to the strength of the 3.2 block and the quality of Porsche production from the time. It's covered ~174,000 miles since new, a figure that those in the know shouldn't find alarming, when maintained correctly these cars will continue to reward the owner.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Mike the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'm lucky enough to have owned a few 911s and I just love the iconic 930 shape to this era.

Mike is definitely a Porsche enthusiast, he's been around them since he was a kid and his dad still owns a '70s 2.2L 911. Mike himself has owned a few too in various different guises, both classic and modern.

Mike's owned the car for around a year, and has spent some time refurbishing the brakes, getting the car serviced by a local specialist, fitting a new electric hood to the car and a new Dansk exhaust. He owns another 3.2, this time a narrow body, as well as some other gems like a 993 C4S. A dream car for him though is a 911 LE, and a recent opportunity to acquire one has meant this Supersport is coming to sale. Mike will be happy to answer any questions you have on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The Turbo (930) was the poster car for Porsche fans and the Supersport used all the good looks and the naturally aspirated 911 - a perfect combination.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the correct 16" Porsche Fuchs wheels, with wider 245 rears and painted in black, as was the standard option for these cars. The wheels present in very good condition, and have recently had a new centre caps fitted - a nice touch to see them pointing in the right direction.

The car has had some new Nankang tyres fitted to the rear, and is wearing Continental ContiSportContacts on the front.

View the picture gallery to see the wheels up close.

Bodywork

Flared arches, the iconic tea-tray spoiler and the front chin spoiler are the main exterior changes that define the Supersport. The bodywork on this example is in very good condition.

On our visit we didn't observe any tell-tail visual signs of corrosion that are typical for this era of 911; under the headlights or 'B' posts indicating kidney bowl issues. The car has seen various refurbishment work in the past which explains why it stands in good stead now, a major refurbishment actioned in late 2003.

The panel gaps on the whole are good for a car of this age, the doors could do with some adjustment to pull them in tighter.

Paint

Finished in Guards Red, it's a colour which is a favourite amongst many Porsche enthusiasts and screams the '80s we think.

The paint colour and finish is in very good order, even across all the panels and retaining a deep shine and lustre.

Glass and Trim

The trim on this car is in similarly good condition to the rest of the exterior. The black plastic items have a strong dark colour to them, and the glass looks in good condition too.

Mike has had a new electric folding roof fitted, you can see it in operation at the end of the video. He has also fitted some new classic style stone chip protectors for the rear wheel arches, items the car would have come with from factory.

Interior

Deep bolstered sports seats, the iconic 5 dial dashboard layout and the option to be open to the skies above.

Seats and Carpets

Black and red leather seats on this car, the carpets following the same colour scheme too. The interior has been refurbished at some point in the car's life, with the leather to the seats renewed, and matching red leather applied to the bottom of the the door storage compartments. The leather on the remainder of the car looks to be original.

The carpets are in good condition, they show some use as you'd expect, and importantly looking under all the carpets this car looks to have been kept out of the wet for most of its life, with the floor pans showing no signs of damp etc.

View the photo gallery for a closer look.

Dashboard

Finished in black, the dashboard presents in good, unfussy condition. The classic 911 dash is very much one which is designed to keep you focused on the road. The centre console area features the original tape cassette holders still, a nice touch.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a 3 spoke Porsche steering wheel wrapped in black leather, and the gear stick with a contrasting red leather gaitor. Both present in good condition, the leather on the steering wheel having a shine expected from use and the gearstick some similar wear related to age.

Mechanics

Featuring the "bullet proof" 3.2-litre naturally aspirated flat six, some would argue that this era of Carrera was peak Porsche 911, we can understand why.

Engine and Gearbox

These 3.2L blocks are extremely reliable when maintained correctly, the build quality and engineering of the Porsche technicians shines through with these cars. Later models featured the "G50" gearbox, it has a more popular pattern and many would say is a box which is much more easy to live with day to day.

We actioned a cold start on the car, it sprang in to life with that familiar flat six chatter you get from this era of air-cooled 911s. As the car is on SORN, we just manoeuvred it around the storage unit for the photo shoot, watch the video to see and hear the engine in action.

The car had a top end engine rebuild in late 2003, and Mike has just had the car serviced by his local specialist, and he informs us this included valve adjustments.

Suspension and Brakes

The Supersport (M491) didn't just take the good looks from the Turbo (930), along with the wider track the suspension and braking system was lifted too. Stronger, stiffer and more powerful, it's a definite step up from a standard Carrera of era.

In Mike's ownership, he has refurbished the brakes, spending some time painting them too, the black calipers looking great against the drilled discs that come with the Supersport.

The Drive

Yes, it's rear-engined and yes, it has no power steering and the pedals need a certain knack to master, but that's where the appeal of these early air-cooled 911s comes from. Put simply, no other cars that compare to it. Drive a 911 and any driving enthusiast will understand what the fuss is all about.

Electrics and Other

Fitted with an electric folding roof, this is a new item that Mike has replaced, you can see it in action in the video review. The car features an aftermarket modern radio, to Mike's knowledge everything is working as it should do on this car. We did notice that the wing mirror adjustment joystick was a bit temperamental.

History and Paperwork

A UK RHD 911 Supersport Cabriolet with all the iconic looks and the bullet proof 3.2L Carrera flat six - maintained and cared for, these cars will go for miles, and here's an example just like that.

Coming with a folder full of service receipts and a service book full of stamps, this Porsche 911 Carrera Supersport Cabriolet has covered a solid ~174,000 miles over its life. This car has clearly been enjoyed, and has had thousands of £'s spent on it over its life so it can keep delivering for its owners.

The car looked stunning on our visit, even if it was a grey day in Wales. Some key points to note when looking through the service history that help to explain the condition, over and above the regular servicing, are the top end engine rebuild at ~111,000 miles in 2003, along with a body refurbishment too as detailed in the invoices. The car has had a recent service from a specialist in Cardiff, along with a new hood being fitted this year and the brakes being refurbished.

These cars were built to be driven, and it's great to see examples like this that have had just that as well as being treated with care. With a car like this, you can not only stare at its beauty like you might with a low mileage garage queen, but you can also get out and drive it with confidence, the best of both worlds.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5C, HPi.
