Introduction

Kulraj Salh
COO

A perfect blend of timeless design and thrilling open-top driving - a true automotive legend.

The Porsche 911 Targa combines classic design with thrilling performance, earning its place as one of the most iconic sports cars in history. It's instantly recognisable styling, low driving position, and precision engineering make it a standout. Powered by a 3.2L flat-six engine delivering ~231 BHP, it offers strong performance with a distinct character. As the final model year of the revered "impact bumper" line, it marks the peak of Porsche’s air-cooled engineering before the 964 era. The signature Targa roll bar and removable roof panel provide an open-air driving experience without sacrificing the 911’s renowned handling.

Coming to market from just over ~3 years, this example has benefitted from servicing carried out in August 2024, new HT leads and distributor cap, new Bilstein shocks installed on the rear. The car has had a top end engine rebuild in the past, and also had a body restoration in the past were the "kidney bowls" were replaced along with other works as necessary. The car is also complete with its original Porsche servicing books, branded portfolio and Porsche toolkit, and a current MOT valid until 12.07.2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting James the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having been a fan of classic 911's for as long as I can remember, the 3.2 is up there as one of my favourites.

Porsche cars have been a big part of James, the current owners, motoring history. Owning a number of sports cars over his life, James knew the Porsche was the car for him, he told us, "I've wanted an air-cooled 911 for some time, and spent quite a while looking for the right one".

Having owned the car for a few years now, the 911 Targa has certainly given James the buzz for classic cars, he went on to say, "The style of the 911 is just something else. I love the pace of the car as well as the looks, I'm a big fan of the flat-six sound and road handling the car has".

Despite being one of his favourite cars he's owned, the time has come for James to part ways with his beloved Porsche, James said, "I have a property project on the horizon, and so the proceeds from the sale will be going in to that, one day I think I'll own a 3.2 again!". Should you have any questions about the car, James would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

The iconic 911 silhouette, finished with a smart black over black colourway, makes for a stand out combination.

Wheels and Tyres

Being a "Sport" the car comes with 16" Fuchs wheels from factory and they are finished with black centres. All appeared to be in good condition, we didn’t notice any major damage, just the occasional age-related marks here and there.

The front of the 911 is fitted with Pirelli P6000 tyres, with a spec of 205/55, dated from 2012 and Pirelli P7's with a spec of 225/50, dated from 2011 at the rear. All tyres appeared to be in good visual condition with no initial concerns about the remaining tread. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this 911 and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the 911 showed well overall. Looking over the exterior, the panel lines looking straight and well-aligned. We noted a couple of minor parking related dings, and a slight creasing to the offside door.

Both doors, engine bay and front boot open and close without concern. The signature 'whale tail' spoiler at the rear was a highlight to the exterior and added to that classic Porsche look. In previous ownership, the kidney bowls have been replaced and show no concerns here. There is some corrosion to the front window frame, as pictured and shown in the videos. James tells us this is as he bought it, and the car has been in professional dry storage in his ownership, so the issue has been kept under control.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in black (L700), the coverage is nice and even across the car with no noted differences in colour. The car has been well looked after, and polished as pictured, giving a "mirror like" finish and not the typical swirl marks you often see with a car this age. We did spot some minor marking around the front emblem, a small area of paint imperfection around the fuel cap and some marks to the door edges etc. Given the 911 has been on the road for over ~35 years, these observations were in line with our expectations.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, side windows, mirrors and lenses all appear in great condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass. The seals look good around the car and in line with the rest of the condition. We didn't note any issues on the rubber sections on the interior edges and only showed a few signs of age related wear. Badges and emblems are present and correct, the rear "Carrera" badge has been affixed a bit high but an easy fix.

The "Targa roof" shows nicely having been replaced in 2006. Both sets of keys for the roof are also included.

Interior

With the classic Porsche instrument cluster, and quality materials in the cabin, the 911 makes the driving experience a pleasure.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with the deeper bolstered leather seats as part of the "Sport" option, they showed well and looked more than presentable. We noted some signs of wear to the drivers seat outer bolster, typical for the age of the car. Looking over the rear seating showed great condition with only minor use noted on the back seats.

Carpets through the Porsche interior showed nicely. Underneath the cabin carpets on the floor pans showed no concerning issues. We also reviewed the front boot section, specced with the velour carpet optional factory upgrade, which again displayed well.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The black dash appears in good shape with no major issues to report. Black dials with red needles looked great and were all functioning as expected. The odometer showed with ~128,159 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls all appear to be in great condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching. We noted no issues with any warning lights and the speedometer, fuel gauge, oil temp, and rev counter and were all functioning without concern when starting up the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the original Porsche black leather trimmed steering wheel, this has some slight slights of usage but in keeping with the age and mileage of the Porsche.

The gear stick shows no major signs of wear or damage, and presents well. The handbrake looked in good condition too. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

With a top-end rebuild complete, the 911 is well set up for future owners to enjoy taking in the unforgettable soundtrack of the flat-six.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up from cold, we noted no concerns and the 911 performed without issue when running and out on the road. The car idled smoothly and its engine was easily capable of taking the driver up to speed in no time at all. The G50 manual gearbox showed no concerns with shifting the Porsche through to the gears.

We took the car out around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up, a closer look underneath the Porsche at the local mechanics garage, and more detail in the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or issue from the suspension when we were on the road in the car, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. As part of the Sport setup on this example, the suspension is slightly stiffened, offering a firmer but responsive ride. New Bilstein shocks were fitted to the rear in 2024.

The brakes bring the car to a halt in a straight line with no juddering reported to come through the pedal. The stopping power and control felt great, worked as to be expected and was in line with the expectations of the car.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

Excellent handling in the Porsche was proven as it gripped the road and corners out on our test drive without concern after recently completed rebalancing and tracking works.

The soundtrack out on the roads was beautiful and quickly got up to speed out on the roads. The powerful Porsche brakes provided ample stopping force. Overall, the 911 provides refinement and open-air enjoyment in one very stylish package.

Electrics and Other

The heater fan was tested and working on our journey out. During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in great condition. The Porsche is complete with a branded toolkit and a spare wheel located in the front boot. The car also comes with a new stereo from Blaupunkt that has Bluetooth connectivity etc, but is classic styled as pictured.

The optional equipment codes - detailed in the servicing book note the Porsche includes; (425) Rear window wiper, (494) Rear shelf speakers, (567) Top-tinted windscreen, (975) Velour carpet in luggage compartment and (C16) UK LUX spec including tinted windows and special paint.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~3 year ownership, this car benefits from a top end engine rebuild in the past, along with exterior restoration too, and more recent servicing to ensure it continues to give the authentic 911 experience.

The Targa has benefitted from maintenance as needed in the current 3 year ownership, including servicing last carried out in 2024, 2 replacement front tyres in 2012 and new HT leads and distributor cap. As well as this, new Bilstein shocks were updated to the rear.

In previous ownership, the car has had a new top end rebuild and clutch replacement. Most importantly the car has had a top end rebuild completed. The car is also complete with its original Porsche servicing books, branded portfolio and Porsche toolkit and an indoor car cover.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hello. The photos show the restoration work to the passenger side sill and kidney bowl. Has similar work been undertaken to the drivers side?

Are the dents mentioned in the description the dent and crease in the drivers door and the dent in the rear drivers side wing or are there others?

Is the paint imperfection around the fuel filler a rust bubble or just a paint defect or chip?

Do all the electrics work including the mirrors as they can be a pain to get working?

In the road test video there seemed quite a lot of wind noise. Was the targa panel in place or removed? Maybe that is just the nature of the targa model even with the roof in place?

In the road test there is a fan like noise from the engine before the engine is started. Any idea what this is?

Also I notice that the “targa” badges are missing from the targa hoop. Do you have these?

Sorry for all the questions – thanks for your time.

    Hi James,

She looks lovely. Am I right in saying there is some paint blistering due to corrosion at the lower near side part of the windscreen and also around the connection of the windscreen wipers. Apologies if this is not the case it is always difficult to tell with video of a black car.

    Thank you

    Kind regards

    Mark

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
