Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

Well-received by the motoring press, the 928 went forward to win the car of the year in 1978, the large V8 and spacious cabin made it an excellent Grand Tourer.

The Porsche 928 is a luxury grand tourer produced by Porsche between 1978 and 1995 and was originally intended to replace the companies iconic 911. It quickly became the top-of-the-line Porsche available at the time. Porsche combined a powerful V8 with refinement, comfort, and luxurious equipment to offer customers the perfect middle ground between a luxury sedan and a small sports car.

Porsche executives believed such a flagship model would have a much wider appeal than the compact 911. Today the 928 is a usable and appreciating classic, especially the larger 5.0L V8 and well-spec'd from factory examples like this one.

Martin is an avid 928 fan, having owned 2 during the 80s, he always dreamed of owning the later and more powerful S4. Since purchasing he's had many enjoyable journeys in the car, and mentions how intoxicating the V8 sounds on the open roads.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Martin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This is my third 928, and what a car - the V8 engine with that exhaust note is quite intoxicating.

Martin is a big 928 fan, so much so, he owned two during the 80s. After selling his business he decided to get back into the Porsche 928, purchasing this Baltic Blue V8 example for his collection. Having owned a few before, Martin reports the 5.0L V8 engine is the one to go for. In automatic, the car tends to pull off from second gear because it generates so much torque and horsepower.

During Martins two and a half years of ownership, he had the entire underside wire-brushed, checked and wax sealed, a new fuel tank support fitted, along with some of the electrics repaired, including the window winders. The gearbox has been flushed thoroughly and had its oil changed.

With another car on its way, Martin has decided to part with the 928 to make some space in his garage. He'll be happy to answer all of your questions about this Porsche in the comments below.

Exterior

Innovative design combined with superb engineering and quality - Porsche's range-topping GT takes centre stage in Baltic Blue.

Wheels and Tyres

This 928 S4 is fitted with Porsche Cup Sport alloys, all of which look in good condition, just some minor signs of paint/lacquer peel. The wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sports which have a good amount of tread present.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this 928 S4 and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The panel gaps look good on this 928 S4, with the only panel fit requiring some fettling being the passenger door.

On our visit, we noticed some minor bubbling around the front arches and roof/windows. In addition to this, there is some typical crazing/signs of repair to the front bumper. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

The finish of the paintwork is to a good standard, even in colour and finish across every panel with a deep lustre throughout, the colour choice of "Baltic Blue" works really well, paired with the dark blue interior.

The car does show it's age though on the exterior, some typical stone chips to the front and wing mirrors to note, and the roof showing some lacquer issues. Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks great on this 928 S4, with no signs of cracks, chips or discolouration noted, the window rubbers look good too. The rubber and plastic trim could benefit from a coating of trim restorer which is an easy fix, and tightening up in places.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of this 928 S4.

Interior

The interior belies the mileage of this car; quality leather seats, wool carpet, and spacious light cabin give the 928 the perfect setting for a GT.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with dark blue ruffled leather seats (option: 980) with lumbar support (650) finished with white piping. These high-quality seats have really stood the test of time, and appear in great condition all around with some common creasing and wear to the leather seat bolsters.

The door cards, roof lining, and carpets match the overall good condition. Having been fitted with blue overmats, the original white mats and white carpey are in very good condition, not what you'd expect for a +100,000 mile example. We have captured high-resolution photos and videos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the hard-wearing and high-quality Porsche interior.

Dashboard

The dashboard and centre console are in good order throughout. The switchgear is good, with no reported issues with any of their function. The dials are very legible with no notable glass or binnacle damage.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the classic 80s steering wheel, familiar with other Porsche models alike.

Both the automatic gear stick and steering wheel appear in great condition.

Mechanics

This 5.0L V8 GT can eat up the miles with lots of torque on offer, instant performance is available when required too.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with the refined Porsche 32 valve 5.0L V8, the car quickly reaches 60mph from standing in 5.8 seconds - you have ~316BHP at your disposal.

The car drives well on the move, with no issues mentioned with the automatic gearbox or the performance of the engine. The exhaust appears in good condition and has a lovely note to compliment, listen to and watch the mechanical video to see the engine in action. On the day of the photography the car briefly overheated whilst stationary and idling for a long time, it recovered on driving and did not lose much coolant. Martin thinks this might be an electrical niggle with the cooling fan/thermostat.

Suspension and Brakes

The S4 came with uprated suspension and brakes to tame the large 5L engine that powers it. The car handles firm but is comforting enough to enjoy long cruises across countries. Martin reports the suspension and brakes work well with no issues to note.

The Drive

The 928 S4, is a great performer in all fields, speed, handling, and offers comfort across different road types. The 928 is the perfect middle ground between a sports car and a full-sized luxury saloon, these 928's in their later S4 guise have become very collectable.

Electrics and Other

This 928 S4 is fitted with pop-up headlights, a sunroof, and air conditioning.

There is some attention required to some electrical items, Martin reporting that the sunroof, air-con, interior light and rear fog lights are not working currently. The wing mirrors, boot opener and rear windscreen wiper motors all seem to have working motors but don't always operate. In his ownership, he's had the window motors replaced so they are working fine, along with central locking and seat adjustment. Front lights and washer wipers are also working correctly.

History and Paperwork

This is one well-spec'd 928 S4, ready for its new custodian. A very practical and capable sports car ideal for road trips next summer.

Have a look at the paperwork photographs for a detailed view on the history. Services, MOT's and previous work carried out in the form of receipts. Martin purchased the car 2 and a half years ago and has really enjoyed using the car during that time.

Options: Baltic Blue paint, Dark blue leather with white piping interior, C16 - UK spec, 058 - Bumpers with impact absorbers, 249 - Auto, 302 - Type designated on rear end, 330 - Blaupunkt Toronto, 513 - Lumbar support, 650 - Sunroof, 935, 980 - Ruffled leather seats.

Martin will be happy to answer any of your questions about the 928 S4 in the comments below.
