Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Consigner and Editor

The level of engineering effort invested was unprecedented, the 928 still looks like no other car.

Originally introduced to the world in 1978, the Porsche 928 was designed to modernise the brand with a grand-touring state-of-the-art supercar. Developed over a span of seven years, the 928 represented a bold vision for Porsche's future. Equipped with an aluminum V8 engine and a front-engine rear-wheel-drive layout, the car was aimed at succeeding the air-cooled 911, but both models coexisted as stable thoroughbreds throughout the 928’s 17-year production run.

The 928 S4, which was launched in 1987, boasted superior performance, efficiency, and features compared to its predecessors. It gained respect for its remarkable straight-line speed, yet surprisingly, it handled and performed much better than one might expect given its substantial size. The added convenience, spacious interior, and a mix of steel, aluminium and polyurethane body of the 928 made them perfect for long-distance travel. Complemented by a durable 4-speed automatic transmission sourced from Mercedes-Benz, working in tandem with the powerful 5.0-litre V8 engine, the 928 was seen as the ultimate executives express.

This 1989 928 S4 comes in a white exterior paired with an attractive red leather interior. After a period of being stored, it has been put back into service and has had £2,500 worth of repairs completed in the last year, along with an MOT that is valid until February 2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Steve the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It attracts lots of interest; especially at classic car meets.

Steve had the good fortune of winning the car in a raffle, drawn in by the prospect of owning a Porsche 928. Since acquiring the car in the summer of 2024, he has taken it to various classic car shows and has kept it securely in a garage when not being driven.

Recognising that his true passion lies in British open top sports cars, Steve has decided to sell the 928 S4 to someone who will take care of it and use the vehicle more frequently.

Steve will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Dressed in a sharp white finish, the style has aged gracefully and continues to attract attention.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16-inch alloy wheels are smartly displayed and show no notable signs of wear.

Reassuringly, the car includes a full set of Yokohama tires that were fitted in 2024.

Bodywork

The car's structure seems to be in good shape, with the floor pan, boot floor, and wheel wells appearing solid.

The steel and aluminium body panels align well, featuring consistent shut lines. The panels show no signs of damage except for a small and treatable dent on the rear wing near the passenger door. There is no noticeable corrosion on the outside. All doors open and close without difficulty, although the drivers door tends to swing itself to close.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The white paint displays a good lustre and is mostly clear of road chips and nice overall condition.

Looking closely, the car appears to have had a re-spray at some point, with some minor runs observed on the door panels and wings. There are signs of under-paint bubbling on the near-side front nose and the driver's side door frame.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen exhibits slight lamination issues around the edges, while the remainder of the glass is in good condition. The headlamps function properly in both raising and lowering.

The offside rear lamp has some minor fractures and some side trims and glass seals have slight paint imperfections, probably due to its recent paint touch-up. The driver's side glass seal displays indications of aging, the rest of glass and door seals are good.

The front air dam exhibits some distortion and the boot sill edge is missing screw caps.

Interior

Integrating a solid interior design concept with premium materials; the cabin still impresses.

Seats and Carpets

The vibrant red leather interior has lasted well, complemented by the well-maintained condition of the seats. Aside from some typical minor bolster scuffs and indentations on the back seats, the leather is intact without any tears, and the white piping looks good. With the sole exception of the passenger seat's forward and backward movement, everything operates as intended.

The carpets are complete, exhibiting slight wear and minor discoloration in some areas, but they are free from dampness. The boot carpet fits a bit loosely, and the privacy cover and trim lining display subtle signs of aging, though they seem to have seen light use.

Dashboard

The red leather-upholstered dashboard and centre console are in great condition. The black centre console fascia switches show some wear with the rest of the controls and the binnacle switchgear presenting well.

The digital clock has begun to delaminate, and the air conditioning is not functioning at full strength. The sunroof and internal boot release didn’t operate on the day but heating works well, along with the electric windows.

The leather headlining is in good condition, with no noticeable marks found on the trim or door cards.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever present well, although some slight wear is visible on the steering wheel mount.

Mechanics

The 928 S4 provides a sophisticated driving experience with an unexpectedly agile nature.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start procedure was hassle-free, with the car starting promptly and idling steadily. After the condensation cleared, there were no indications of unwanted exhaust smoke, and all the dashboard warning lights remained off.

The engine cam displays some surface wear, but the general condition of the engine is encouraging, as verified by a mechanic who determined that the engine is functioning well.

The automatic transmission functions as it should, shifting smoothly without any slippage or jerking.

The car has a fuel leak when completely filled up - so some investigation is required there.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension effectively managed the road conditions without any noticeable issues; the car smoothly absorbed bumps without any thuds. It rides comfortably and remained steady at speeds exceeding 40 mph while handling impressively for a vehicle of its size.

The brakes perform well, bringing the car to a stop without fuss and operating quietly without any vibrations.

The Drive

Considered as the quintessential 1980s Porsche grand tourer, the 928 S4 maneuvers with an unexpectedly nimble feel. The low laid-back seating and elegant interior is enhanced by the soft purr of its well-balanced V8 engine. It felt perfectly suited for gliding along open roads, while showcasing its grip and refinement.

While driving, the car operates smoothly, with the engine pulling strongly and without any hesitation. There were no distracting mechanical noises coming from the suspension; however, for a brief time, it seemed like the fuel pump was louder than usual. This noise quickly faded after maintaining a speed of 50 mph as the engine reached its proper operating temperature.

The steering remains stable without any wobbles and continues to track straight during braking. Steve has not experienced any issues with the engine temperature or oil pressure - he noted that the fuel gauge is not working properly.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with a functional immobiliser and also comes with a nearly complete toolkit and a trickle charger.

History and Paperwork

Approximately £2,500 has been spent over the past year, and with the completion of a few jobs mentioned in this listing will make the car into a reliable and sorted 928.

Originally registered in February 1989, the car is accompanied by a collection of recent invoices, including one of which dates back to 2001 for a timing belt renewal. An old version of its V5 document indicates that the car has had several long-term owners, with the previous owner acquiring it in 2011 and subsequently putting it into storage. In 2024, it was obtained by raffle company who then raffled it off as a prize.

After taking possession of the car, Steve has invested approximately £2,500 into mechanical repairs, which included fixing a door catch, addressing a coolant issue, and installing a new battery. Most of the advisories noted in its recent MOT have been addressed, such as tightening the handbrake, repairing a loose fuel pipe, and replacing a missing drive shaft bolt.

Before this, the car received electrical repairs, a gear oil service, and a new thermostat, track rod end, and drop links; all fitted in May 2024 by Autostrasse. Historical invoices indicate a service performed in June 2009 carried out around 2,000 miles ago. Looking at the history, the last recorded time its timing belt was changed was in 2001, with a recorded mileage of 75,754.

It has an MOT valid until February 2026 and includes its owners handbook, and an unused replacement service book.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
